My interest in the PhD biostatistics program at results from high compatibility between your research, your course offerings, and my interests. In order to explain my career and academic goals I would like to detail some of the work I did as an undergraduate and explain how it prepares me for graduate level research at your institution.
The computational neuroscience training program at the University of Washington was a unique interdisciplinary opportunity. It provided access to neurobiology courses so mathematically inclined students could collaborate with neuroscience majors. Being held responsible for the mathematical modeling on a team of students with various strengths was exceptionally rewarding, and I'm confident that I will

Experimenting with different techniques in order to get the most accurate solution in handwriting recognition was a major independent project, extending well after the course ended. This inspired me to embark on self-study of basic statistics as well, including mathematical statistics. I found the challenge of choosing from statistical learning techniques with unknown efficacy a gratifying challenge and I intend to continue that thread at the graduate level.
Before all the work I've mentioned, starting a decade ago, I attended Indiana University. During this period I was affected by a personal issue and this is reflected by poor grades. Taking time away from school allowed me to resolve my personal life, demonstrated by a profoundly improved record from 2011 on. I consider my most recent work, at the University of Washington, to be a far more accurate reflection of my ability.
I should emphasize that this misadventure was not without benefit since I worked an emergency medical technician (EMT) after leaving IU. Working as a health-care provider added to the breadth of my background and imbued me with a deep appreciation for the importance of public health. Since clinical trials and public health are intimately connected to biostatistics, this memory has been important in guiding me to choose biostatistics over

I would be thrilled to expand on the subjects that I had a chance to investigate as an undergraduate including.... However, I'm also particularly excited about the research your institution is doing in.... which I had little chance to investigate as an undergrad.
As for career goals, I have no fixed preference between the traditional trichotomy of academia, industry and government work. My indecision stems from the simplicity of my goals: I want to do work which is honest, interesting and novel. Since all three employment sectors could potentially offer that I remain open to a career in any sector.
I've chosen to share applied experiences, but the core of my undergraduate education was theoretical. In mathematics I focused on probability, linear algebra and real analysis (including measure theory), so I am keen to attend an institution which will build statistical theory on that firm mathematical foundation. This portion of my background makes me an especially strong candidate for the first years of the program, where students are expected to master statistical theory.
I look forward to hearing your decision and thank you for your
The decision to enroll in graduate school came after considerable time and soul searching. While contemplating the decision to return to school I thought about life, school and work. I realized that my experience in these areas have prepared me for the challenge and I am going to succeed.
My affinity for biology comes from my childhood days that I spent watching dissection of rats and looking at the cellular structure under microscope. My mother, being a professor of biology regularly used to take me with her to a Biology lab and that is where my journey towards medical career began. Early on in my life, my family went through a long agony of my father's illness and death. This became a solitary stimulus for me to take up this profession and a driving force to strive for excellence. Going through that turmoil of recurrent hospital visits gave me a firsthand experience of an anguishing family.
I would welcome the opportunity to expand upon my application either through a visit to the school and/or at interview.
I hope that by sharing my personal statement, I have been able to give you an insight into the person I am and what I hope to achieve. I have included what I have felt to be the most significant influences on my career choice. I expect undergraduate school to continue to be a journey which I embark upon with great
I am confident and enthusiastic about my proposed interest areas and I believe I have the necessary skills and competence to become an asset to Stanford University. With my ability to self-learn, persevere and work hard, I am sure that I can face the university’s highly challenging environment. I am aware that to excel in the program, I would have to meet the high standards set by the university. I am confident that I can foster a symbiotic relationship with the university and its students. With this, I humbly ask for the golden opportunity to be admitted to Stanford University.
The career I wish to pursue is that of a stockbroker. I am extremely interested in the trading of stocks and financial holdings so the career of a stockbroker just seems to fit in with my overall plan. Numbers have also always been a fascination of mine and the trends of the economy and long term financial outlooks have often interested me greatly. Stock broking is a risky business that one needs to be prepared for highs and lows if choosing to pursue. You must understand what a stockbroker truly does to even begin to follow this as a life long career.
I have accomplished a lot in a short period; however, my journey is not complete until I continue my education. Essentially, this degree will help foster my growth and career success. My passion and dedication will speak for itself. My hard work and determination will prevail and I am a fit more than the next applicant because I have the passion, experience, critical thinking and analytical skills needed to complete this program through successfully arguing my capstone in front of a board or committee. My goals are definitely aligned with this program and I hope my next read is an acceptance letter from the admissions council.
I feel that graduate study at your university will give me credentials to secure challenging assignments and ability to meet the demands of those assignments.
An exceptionally eminent faculty, an environment abounded with scholastic activity and a graduate program that beautifully blends the pearls of high-end course work and research facilities at the avant-grade of every field are the attributes that drive my motivation to choose your university for my graduate studies. I can affirm that I possess the basic aptitude, dedication and potential to maintain the aspiration and motivation required for my graduate study. I am certain that the graduate program offered by your University will prove to be the most efficient and effective approach towards my future career. I am convinced that this opportunity will significantly heighten my research expertise, providing me with the essential competence and allowing me to presume my knowledge and potentials to an advanced level.
...fessional such as perseverance, attention to details, critical analysis among many others. Hence, it is my belief, and due to my previous studies and professional experience, that I am ready to join your challenging program and capable of excelling in my studies.
Coming to the point of my current career choice has been a long road. My idea of what a career is or should be has changed with circumstances and age. According to Weintraub (2005), “the average worker spends only four years in a job and will have 12 jobs in as many as five career fields during his or her working life.” (para. 1) My first career was marriage and motherhood followed by a surprising healthcare career. What the future holds waits to be seen. With a bachelor of science degree in information technology the options are wide open.
With an enthusiasm for learning, a research-oriented mindset and a positive outlook, I feel I will do justice to the graduate program at the _________ University and thereby come up to the high expectations that your University demands.
All the research work, training that I will acquire during this PhD program at UTEP will not only enhance my career opportunities, but will also maximize my potentials. I look forward to being a part of your department and hoping that this brief statement has given you an idea of my abilities and interests. I am very confident that if I get an opportunity to be a part of this eminent university, I am sure that my talents will be put to best use.
I am aware of the hard work and perseverance necessary for research work and I know that it is not always as exciting as the published results seem to indicate. Nevertheless, I am sure that my aptitude and drive will see me through the challenge. It is with this in mind, that I look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with your university as a graduate student, I take this opportunity to thank the University faculty for their patient perusal of my application.
I am confident that my strong motivation, my undergraduate experiences and my skill set will help me to measure up to the rigors of graduate study. I look forward to joining XXXX as a graduate student at your esteemed department.
