Riding Blind in Taylor’s Riding a One-Eyed Horse
As with human friendship, the bond that exists between humans and animals can sometimes contain secrets. The hidden mysteries between humans and animals are ironically open because humans tend to talk about the inward discrepancies of their pets with others in front of them. In the poem, "Riding a One-Eyed Horse," by Henry Taylor, the narrator creates a peaceful tone that flows throughout the poem as he/she somberly instructs a potential rider how to ride his one-eyed beast. It's questionable as to how much the horse understands this situation.
The first line grips the reader as the narrator states the horse's present condition. To state that "One side of his world is always missing" allows the attentive rider or listener to enter into the personal and physical world of the horse. John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath is one of the most influential books in American History, and is considered to be his best work by many. It tells the story of one family’s hardship during the Depression and the Dust Bowl of the 1930’s. The Joads were a hard-working family with a strong sense of togetherness and morals; they farmed their land and went about their business without bothering anyone. When the big drought came it forced them to sell the land they had lived on since before anyone can remember. Their oldest son, Tom, has been in jail the past four years and returns to find his childhood home abandoned. He learns his family has moved in with his uncle John and decides to travel a short distance to see them. He arrives only to learn they are packing up their belongings and moving to California, someplace where there is a promise of work and food. This sets the Joad family off on a long and arduous journey with one goal: to survive.
There a lot of literary devices used in the excerpt from All the Pretty Horses that convey the true meaning in the scene. The hallway the man walks in has portraits of his ancestors whom he vaguely knows. This is connected to the present day when the man who he has gone to see now is also dead. The paragraph also uses figurative language like “yellowed moustache” and eyelids that are “paper thin” to tell us that the man he went to see is dead. The next sentence following that says “That was not sleeping. That was not sleeping.” putting emphasis on how the man in front of him isn’t sleeping and is truly dead. From the combination of enjambed and end-stopped lines, the reader almost physically feels the emphasis on certain lines, but also feels confusion where a line does not end. Although the poem lacks a rhyme scheme, lines like “…not long after the disaster / as our train was passing Astor” and “…my eyes and ears…I couldn't think or hear,” display internal rhyme. The tone of the narrator changes multiple times throughout the poem. It begins with a seemingly sad train ride, but quickly escalates when “a girl came flying down the aisle.” During the grand entrance, imagery helps show the importance of the girl and how her visit took place in a short period of time. After the girl’s entrance, the narrator describes the girl as a “spector,” or ghost-like figure in a calm, but confused tone. The turning point of the poem occurs when the girl “stopped for me [the narrator]” and then “we [the girl and the narrator] dove under the river.” The narrator speaks in a fast, hectic tone because the girl “squeez[ed] till the birds began to stir” and causes her to not “think or hear / or breathe or see.” Then, the tone dramatically changes, and becomes calm when the narrator says, “so silently I thanked her,” showing the moment of

The first line in the first stanza is a contradiction from the rest of the stanza because the rest of it has a positive attitude and the first sentence shows that the animal is weak. The third and the fourth line show the glory of the animal by hinting to royalty. The last line in the first stanza helps to back this information up by pointing to Richard the second. In the fifth line the narrator uses thee word us this connects him to the event. "The fierce sunlight tugging the maize from the ground" ("The Bull Calf" line 6). This is imagery, the sunlight showing promise and hope, maize is yellow this refers us back to the sun through the similar color. The last line refers to Richard the second this makes the poem flow better into the next stanza, Richard the second was lowered from his rank much like the calf is going to be.
As the speaker comes to understand the origins of the carousel and the mule, they notice that “The sky did not darken with this news / nor did a general silence fall on the strollers” in the park around them and that “no one even paused to look [their] way” (13-14, 16). These specific phrases in relation to the speaker displays how the speaker themselves are alone in this realization, creating an emotion of loneliness surrounding them. No one in the surrounding area seems to care enough about the plight of the blind mule and how it had been used for human entertainment, illustrating how people’s ignorance leaves those who are knowledgeable alone with nothing but their thoughts. Also, as the speaker was leaving the scene of the carousel at the park, they sang softly to themselves “Poor blind beast… poor blind me, poor blind earth turning blindly on its side” in reflection of the newfound awareness for the world around them (34). The specific way in which this phrase was worded coupled with the language used conjures an emotion of pity that the speaker feels towards the themselves, the mule, and the Earth. One of the characters that show this development is Tom Joad. Tom Joad, in the beginning of the novel, is shown to be selfish and self- centered, but as the story progresses, and the teachings and experiences gained from Jim Casy, he changes to a leader and a helper of the community.
