There a lot of literary devices used in the excerpt from All the Pretty Horses that convey the true meaning in the scene. The hallway the man walks in has portraits of his ancestors whom he vaguely knows. This is connected to the present day when the man who he has gone to see now is also dead. The paragraph also uses figurative language like “yellowed moustache” and eyelids that are “paper thin” to tell us that the man he went to see is dead. The next sentence following that says “That was not sleeping. That was not sleeping.” putting emphasis on how the man in front of him isn’t sleeping and is truly dead. It also references the way that death is associated with sleep and called the long sleep. The excerpt also mentioned that the man is
dressed in a black suit, suggesting that he is in mourning over the man’s death. This also means he is close to the man who died, possibly family, and making the portraits of his ancestors who are all most likely dead connect to the present day events and the death of one of his family members.
The title of the short story, “Four Directions” is symbolic for Waverly’s inner misconceptions. As she goes about her life, she is pulled in different ways by her past and her present. She is torn between her Chinese heritage and her American life. She never thought that instead of being pulled in four directions, she could take all of her differences and combine them. In the end she realizes this with the help of her mother. “The three of us, leaving our differences behind...moving West to reach East” (184), thought Waverly. Her whole life she misconceived her mother’s intentions. Lindo never wanted Waverly to solely focus on her Chinese heritage, but rather combine it with her new American ways. The idea of being pulled in four
McCarthy simply stresses imagery, setting, and conflict all of which show that effortless decisions can lead to great outcomes.
A Pulitzer Prize is an award for an achievement in American journalism, literature, or music. Paul Gigot, chairman of the Pulitzer Prize board, described the award as a “proud and robust tradition”. How does one carry on this robust tradition? By mastery of skilled writing technique, one can be considered for the awarding of this prize. Since its creation in 1917, 13 have been awarded annually, one of which, in 1939, was given to Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings for her novel, The Yearling. Rawlings is an American author from Florida known for writing rural themed novels. Consequently, The Yearling is about a boy living on a farm who adopts an orphaned fawn. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings procured a prestigious Pulitzer Prize for her effectual use of figurative language, sensory details, and syntax.
Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty Horses. In All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy reveals the limitations of a romantic ideology in the real world. Through his protagonist, John Grady Cole, the author offers three main examples of a man’s attempt to live a romantic life in the face of hostile reality: a failed relationship with an unattainable woman; a romantic and outdated relationship with nature; and an idealistic decision to live as an old-fashioned cowboy in an increasingly modern world. In his compassionate description of John Grady, McCarthy seems to endorse these romantic ideals.
In ‘horse,’ the speaker describes a horse being betrayed and then killed in a small town in Texas. The first two stanzas described the horse thundering towards outstretched hands being attracted to a field of corn but instead it is attacked by a group of white teenage boys who leave it mutilated. The sheriff of the town does not do anything because he believes that it is in their nature to do so. In the last stanzas the Mexican owner puts the horse out of his misery and someone tries to pay him for the damage. His people are disappointed because they believe that money could not make up for the death of the horse but, they do nothing about it. It would seem the horse in the poem is meant to represent the Mexican culture and how it is being eradicated by the dominant white society in the United States.
The Book Thief, Markus Zusak’s 2005 novel, uses various stylistic devices and conventions to portray key ideas of the value of lifе, the beauty and brutality of human nature and the power of words - highlighting not only their ability to be used for good, but also reminding the reader that words can also be responsible for great evil, during the second World War. Through the meticulous use of narrative voice and having Death as the narrator, then incorporating analepsis, prolepsis, motif, symbolism and figurative language, Zusak is able to highlight these key ideas by successfully taking an innovative approach to creating a captivating and complex text.
In the story, “The Treasure Of Lemon Brown”, the author uses descriptive adjectives and figurative language, such as similes to make the story better.
The title She Walks in Beauty by Lord Byron, the author uses similes and imagery to create a focus and mood that shows the theme that a woman can be beautiful even with her darker qualities.. The poem is about a man describing the beauty of a woman. He is not saying the way she walks is beautiful but, everything she does is beautiful. The figurative language in this poem includes a simile in the first line, “ She walks in beauty, like the night” (Byron 1) to give readers an idea of her beauty. The author explains darkness and brightness and contrasts the two, often repeated throughout the poem, “And all that’s best of dark and bright, Meet in her aspect and her eyes” (Byron 3-4). The connection with dark and bright
Shakespeare in A Midsummer Night’s Dream uses figurative language like allusions to make people reading the books think and he uses well known references such as Hercules and Cupid both from Greek mythology. Shakespeare also uses other types of figurative language irony , oxymorons, and personification. This makes the audience laugh and makes them not expect what's gonna happen next. When Bottom head turned into a head of ones of a donkey, this is funny because his name is already Bottom and when all his friends ran away from him it was dramatic irony since, the audience knew what was happening but he didn't and he says there trying to “make an ass” out of him. This is important when it comes to the theme, because Titania falls in love with
The second stanza of the poem focuses on a different aspect of the mother’s personality. Although Millay is addressing her mother’s death, the tone is not sentimental. In lines 5-6, the speaker uses the small detail of the mother’s brooch to illustrate her mother’s personality: the brooch is symbolic of some of her mother’s characteristics, “The golden brooch my mother wore/She left behind for me to wear” (Millay, lns 5-6). The fact that the speaker’s mother wore a golden brooch displays that she acknowledged finery: the brooch symbolizes the fact that the narrator’s mother had a good sense of style and was steadfast and brave, in addition to being feminine and beautiful, just like the brooch. The golden brooch accommodates as a contrast to
When people think about the poem “Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost, they might think about how beautifully written it is; however, many people will not think about how depressing the poem actually is. Robert Frost suffered from depression throughout his lifetime. When reading “Acquainted with the Night,” Frost wants his reader to understand the feelings that run through his head every day. Throughout “Acquainted with the Night,” Frost uses imagery, symbols, and other forms of figurative language to convey his depressing message to his readers.
Figurative language is one of literature’s great facets. Authors use it both to enhance their story and portray their own voices. Not only is figurative language used to portray an author’s voice, it is also used in characterization, tone, theme, and style.
I think Dudley Randall wrote it in poetic form for one simple reason to let the readers be more with what they are reading and putting it in poetic form brings more feelings towards it, You feel more aware while reading this. Randall wanted the readers to see and feel how the figurative language that is used to see how very one of them is used and by putting it as a poem it helps feel more of what happened in the tragedy of The Ballad of Birmingham. What really caught my attention in this poem was the inference of race and how Randall made it describe how much racism there was back then, his inference of race was ‘’ Small brown hands’’. I think he choose to use that because it shows that not being treated equal is not a good way of life.
Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness uses vivid imagery and figurative language to describe the main setting of novella—the Congo River and surrounding jungle. Through protagonist Charles Marlow’s personification of the setting, it develops as a living entity, uncontrollable force, and essential aspect of his story. The terrain acts as an embodiment of Africa and its people, as the characters’ attitudes of the land reflect their inner thoughts and beliefs about the “uncivilized” land. As the setting changes from a backdrop to the forefront of Marlow’s tale, its effects on the characters and the plot becomes increasingly evident. The setting’s animated nature and portrayal of the novel’s themes allow it to gain a pivotal role in the story and become
It talks about how the women who died for beauty had laid next to the guy who had died for truth and found peace in the fact that beauty and truth are in one and declared that they are family and talked between themself, until unconsciousness came in the form of moss and covered their mouths and their names on the grave tomb” (n.p). Some think of death as an ending, but others like Emily Dickinson think of it as a peaceful journey.
