Vergil, in his work, The Aeneid, uses many rhetorical devices, word order and meter to add details to the meaning if the text. One of the rhetorical devices he uses is a simile (Ac-mulcet 1.148-153). Just before this passage, the winds overturned the sea causing Aeneas and his comrades to be close to death, in the simile the action of the sea is compared to a riot of a peasant crowd in which weapons fly from the enraged people. The venerable man who comes who calms the crowd with his words is compared to Neptune calming the sea. Also, the way in which the crowd falls silent is related to the crashing and stillness of the sea. Vergil keeps a consistent meter throughout all his books of the Aeneid and the same is held through in this passage.
Though easier to consider The Aeneid as a work which clearly defines the roles of man and woman, with men upholding traits of stability, rationality, and containment of oneself, with the women acting irrational and without jurisdiction, this is not quite the case. Gender is not quite the cookie cutter structure one is accustomed to, instead it acts as a much more complicated force within the interactions of the characters. The masculine and feminine become combined within individuals, blended to the point where perhaps sometimes understanding a character is far more complicated than knowing whether it is a 'he' or 'she'.
One of the most notable epic poems, The Odyssey is a story about a hero and his return home from the war in Troy. On his way, many challenges are presented into his path and as a result, the tone throughout the story will make drastic shifts. Despite the many contrasting trials, certain tones are recurring and will emerge in various scenes, regardless of how diverse the threat is. One of the prevailing tones in part one is desperation. Many writers use several diverse ways to persuade readers into believing them. Some writers may tell a story, provide facts and information, or other ideas to encourage his or her reader to agree with the argument. Aristotle’s rhetorical triangle describes three diverse appeals: logos, pathos, and ethos. Logos is based on facts and reasons explaining logical arguments that rely on information and evidence. Logos is built with enough evidence, data, statistics, and reliable information. Another type of appeal is pathos, which attracts the reader’s emotions and feelings into the work. Many writers who use pathos tend to write about their personal experience and by diction and tone. In addition to logos and pathos, ethos corresponds with character and value, which describes certain values with specific kinds of groups. Ariosto adapts and transforms Vergil’s final episode of The Aeneid into his own conclusion in Orlando Furioso. The final scenes in the epics parallel one another in many ways, yet also show distinct differences. Ruggiero and Rodomont represent Aeneas and Turnus, respectively, and the actions of Ariosto’s characters can be interchanged with their corresponding characters’ acts in The Aeneid. Ariosto reminds us of controversy and questions that Vergil elicits in his conclusion and responds interpretively, reshaping the ending and clarifying ambiguities.
Within these two passages, Teiresias is explaining to Oedipus that the Prophecy admitted he killed his father. Oedipus is denying the fact that he killed his father and looking passed the problem. In the play Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, Sophocles uses rhetorical devices to explain to the readers that Teiresias may be blind, but is seeing through the lie that Oedipus is living, while striking him the truth; this is explained through imagery, metaphors, an allusion, and ethos appeal.
A Comparison of Aneas of Aeneid and Turnus of Iliad The subtlety in the differences between Aneas and Turnus, reflect the subtlety in the differences between the Aeneid and the Iliad. Although both characters are devout and noble, Aneas does not possess the ardent passion of Turnus. Unlike Turnus, Aneas is able to place his beliefs in the fated establishment of Latium before his personal interests. Although Turnus is not a bad person, the gods favor Aneas in their schemes.
Additionally, King aimed to connect with the audience using rhetorical devices such as anaphora,repetition, and syntax. For instance, anaphora could be seen in paragraph 10 as King vividly repeats the phrase “when you have …”, attempting to show the audience that he’s had to endure a long list of grievances. While in office, Cicero was conspired against by Lucius Cataline in an attempt to kill a number of senators to overtake the Roman Republic in the Second Catilinarian Conspiracy (Clayton). Upon learning of Cataline’s intentions, Cicero gave an oration to the Senate in the Temple of Jupiter Stator against Cataline, to which he was surprisingly in attendance, in order to address him and his conspirators proclaiming his knowledge of their plans. Cicero was able to stop the conspiracy and avoid the Republic from falling into the hands of his opposition. Through the execution of five conspirators and the fleeing of Cataline, Cicero was able to put down the rebellion efficiently (Clayton). At Caesar’s funeral, Brutus lets Antony’s to speak to the public under two circumstances. Antony was allowed to give a speech only after Brutus’ speech was done and if he promises to not say anything against to the conspirators. Even though Antony promised to not say anything against to the conspirators, he was already planning to take advantage of giving the last words. Antony’s speech is considered as one of the best lines in Shakespeare’s work since it is dramatic significant. At first, it was not obvious how this speech can affect the story until the speech ended. Antony used variety of rhetorical devices in his speech to get what he wants.

In William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, persuasion and rhetoric play a crucial role in a myriad of events and outcomes that occur. In Act one Cassius is trying to convince Brutus to turn against Caesar and join the conspiracy. Later, in Act three, Brutus and Antony speak at Caesar’s funeral. Brutus convinces the Roman people that what he and the conspirators did was for the good of Rome. Antony then persuades the plebeians that the conspirators had no reasonable judgement to kill Caesar and that all Caesar’s future plans were to help Rome. Though many characters appear to be rhetorical, Antony could be considered as the most. Persuasion and rhetoric are used throughout Julius Caesar when Cassius is trying to coax Brutus to join the conspiracy, and when Brutus and Antony convince the crowd at Caesar’s funeral.
