July 2, 1964 Lyndon B. Johnson gave a speech about equality for all through the eyes of god. He talks about how many Americans are denied equal treatment and even their guaranteed rights. His purpose of the speech was to achieve equality for all races and give freedom to all Americans no matter the color of their skin. This speech was given using rhetorical devices and techniques. Johnson used a lot of pathos such as “I am taking steps to implement the law.” He repetitively urges and keeps his point very simplistic. He believes that differences between race are irrelevant. All of these strategies and the fact that he was a white President of the United States contributed to a successful speech. April 12, 1964 Malcolm X gave his speech “The
ballot or the Bullet.” The main idea of his speech was to discuss the false treatments of African Americans and his strong belief in black nationalism, saying the government wasn’t responsible for segregation. Malcolm X discusses how anger leads to inequality and that if this anger was overcome there wouldn’t be such differences in equality. Malcolm used symbols, weasel words and logos in his speech to deliver the message. He expresses that there isn’t civil rights currently in legislation. He even discusses religion “religious philosophy of these others is between them and the god in whom they believe.” Stating that religion is irrelevant when it comes to equality and justice. The content, tone, rhetorical devices and tone of this speech all set it up to be effective. “Remarks upon Signing the Civil Rights Bill” by Lyndon B. Johnson ended up being more effective and appealed more to individuals. This speech thrived more than Malcolm X’s because of Johnson’s use of pathos, discussion of rights and freedom, non complex message and the points he gave to take in that race is irrelevant. His message was straightforward and easy to understand which helps to make it easily acknowledged. This speech did positively impact civil rights and the signing of the civil rights bill. He displayed many examples of ethos, ethos is defined as why you should listen to the speaker. Johnson set out many point of what he was going to do and why you should listen to him. His discussion of the beliefs of Americans and how they are not physically true really draws deliberation on justice and equality. All of these factors made Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Remarks upon Signing the Civil Rights Bill” an abundantly triumphant speech.
On April 18th, 1967, Jackie Robinson, the first African American professional baseball player, wrote a letter to President Lyndon B. Johnson thanking him for his role in the Civil Rights Act. Within the letter, Robinson uses logos and pathos to reassure the president he is doing a great job, and to persuade him not to give up despite the wartime demonstrations.
In the fall of 1963 Kennedy’s Administration was preparing campaigns for the election of 1964 in hopes of bringing the fragile Texas Democratic Party closer. The Kennedys headed to Dallas on the morning of November 22, 1963 to attend a scheduled luncheon. On that tragic day President Kennedy was assassinated in a senseless act of violence. Within the next few hours, Vice President Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as president. In the midst of a grieving country, he was given the duty of handling a transition in leadership and presenting an acceptance speech before Congress. LBJ gave his acceptance speech of the U.S. presidency in front of Congress just five short days after John F. Kennedy had been assassinated. Expectations were high but then again no one knew what was to come of LBJ as president. In a time of much confusion throughout the country, it was his responsibility to reassure the American people about the nations’ immediate future and how he would handle the unfinished business and social issues that JFK had begun.
Part I: Reasoning in the Inaugural Address. President Roosevelt in his inaugural speech first realized the importance of his presidency, the speech and the US. He mentioned that the thing the US nation needs to fear is the fear itself. He further mentioned it as unreasoning, nameless and unjustified terror which constraints and paralyzes the efforts needed to make a retreat (Davis, 2014).
The summer of 1964, President Lyndon Baines Johnson finally decided to sign the Civil Rights Act. This bill permitted people of all races and skin tones to be free from segregation. It promised the extension on voting rights, stronger equal employment opportunities, and guaranteed all Americans the right to use public facilities such as schools, restaurants and swimming pools (Politics or Principle 405). Many Americans questioned if the true decision behind President Johnson signing the civil rights act of 1964 was political or principle. I strongly believe Johnson signed it in a principle matter due to seeing different perspectives in living with prejudice, he would do anything to get the bill signed and he was finally free from the South's persuasive bonds.
It was on January 20th 1961 that John F Kennedy gave his inaugural address after winning the presidential race and beating future president Richard Nixon. President, John F Kennedy in his speech, The Inaugural Address, he describes his plans for growth in America. Kennedy’s purpose is unite the people of the U.S. and bring everyone together for the good cause of promoting growth in the country. He creates a very inspirational tone in order to establish a connection with the U.S. people. In his speech Kennedy really used several rhetorical strategies of persuasion to motivate and persuade the U.S. people that they made the right choice in choosing him.
John F Kennedy delivered one of the finest speeches on January 20, 1961 after being sworn into office. His inauguration speech was so powerful that it captured the entire nations attention, and quotes from it are still remembered by people today. It is one of the finest speeches ever written. It provides a strong appeal to pathos, ethos and logos, and it is because of this that people who never heard the speech can quote lines from it.
“Yesterday December 7th, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy” (Roosevelt). The attack on Pearl Harbor was an event that many Americans will never forget. The day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech to address the public and Congress. His speech started by discussing how Japan had deceived America into thinking that they could create peace between the nations. He spent three paragraphs on how the attack was planned and deliberate and how America was completely unaware of Japan’s intentions. Roosevelt spent only a little time on paying respects to the lost lives of the soldiers. After that, Roosevelt talked about how many other nations Japan has attacked. Then Roosevelt started the “pep talk” portion of his speech. He talked about the strength of the nation and how America will defend themselves against evil forces. He ends his speech with a call for war and asked Congress to declare war against Japan. The goal of his speech was to persuade Congress to declare war on Japan, as well as to get the American people to support him in his endeavors. Roosevelt gave his speech in front of Congress, but the American people all over the nation tuned into the radio to hear his speech. On March 15, 1965 in Washington D.C ……..the courageous President Lyndon B. Johnson has delivered a legendary speech. It was called, “We shall overcome.” The speech came into conjunction, after the sad death of a black protester in Selma, Alabama. The protest was over black voting rights. Blacks were simply discriminated against voting rights on the basis of their skin color. Johnson’s aspiration for the “we shall overcome” speech, was to convince the congress, Americans, to pass his bill. This would be beneficial by enabling blacks to vote. Johnson is widely known for his effective use of ethos, logos, and pathos to engage the crowd.
Equality is when every human gets treated fairly and the same no matter what race, age, and gender. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is when African Americans protested and fought to get their right to vote. The African Americans wouldn’t stop protesting that the president Lyndon B Johnson got involved. President Johnson made a speech that sided with the African Americans. Johnson’s use of allusions and connotative diction throughout the speech develops the idea that anyone should be allowed to vote and the need for that everyone should be treated equally and that the people dignity.
Rhetorical Analysis of Woodrow Wilson's War Address to Congress. With the status of the country’s belligerency heavily in question, an. apprehensive President Woodrow Wilson prepared to request from an unmotivated and unprepared country, a declaration of war against Germany. After exerting every attempt possible to retain the peace and honor of the United States, the President was finally forced to choose between the two. in which he opted for the latter (Seymour 26).
Lyndon B. Johnson’s Voting Rights Speech was given on March 15, 1965. In the past, America had a hard time trying to give African Americans voting rights even though they gained their freedom years before, but, it was hopefully all going to change. Johnson supported the idea of African Americans having the right to vote and he worked his hardest to talk Congress into passing this law. In his speech he’s talking to both the American Citizens and Congress trying to gain their support. When he was trying to get the support of the American people he went out of his way just to show them that this issue was about much more.
He told the citizens that he was concerned about everyone, no matter of race, gender, or religion. Throughout the speech, Lyndon Johnson reminded the nation that he wanted to solve the problem with the nation together. He sees the racial discrimination not only as injustice, but is also denying America and dishonoring the people who gave their lives for the freedom of America (Johnson 2). By doing this, he persuaded the people with emotions and wanted them to support his idea of the civil rights, which promised everyone the right to register to vote without having any problems. It had finally led to an end to the illegal barriers under the 15th Amendment and allowed African Americans to vote without any knowledge or character test.
One of the most influential speeches ever given on the earth was given on a podium at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28th 1963. The great speech was given by Martin Luther King Jr. who dedicated his time on earth to prove that all people are equal. Martin Luther used different parts of the English language to enhance the meaning of his speech and bring out the details. The different rhetorical devices, allusions to historic documents, and metaphors seemed to have brought about the emotions that King was trying to arouse in his listeners. This helped him influence his listeners towards wanting equality for all and changing what was happening in the present so they didn't repeat things in the past.
President John Fitzgerald Kennedy uses ethos in his inauguration speech to appeal to the audience. Halfway down the second page President Kennedy says “...not because the Communists are doing it, not because we seek their votes, but because it is right.”. This phrase appeals to the audience ethically by saying “right”. President Kennedy strengthens this use of ethos by saying two choices followed by the ethical decision. Then near the end of page three President Kennedy says “...to struggle against the common enemies”. President Kennedy appeals to his audience by calling them to “bear the burden of a long twilight struggle”. President Kennedy calls the audience to do the right thing and not to surrender to “the common enemies of man”. Which,
I am extremely sure that Robert F. Kennedy developed his argument perfectly because of the fact that he used a lot of emotion in his speech and he related to the crowd of people that he was speaking to. Yes he did support his claims with strong evidence such as, "For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with-be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act". When he said this he was claiming that all those folks who were African American had the right to be mad and sad because someone who meant so much to them. Yes after reading his speech his rhetoric did indeed successfully persuade the crowd not to riot and instead have peaceful protest just as Martin Luther King Jr. would have wanted it to be. In a video
