I. Attention Getter: Luke Murphy joined the United States Army the day after the 9/11 terrorist attacks at age 18 to protect the freedoms of this great country. In 2006 while on a deployment to Iraq he was leading his troops as a squad leader on a counter insurgency mission in the city of Mosul. He described it as “any other day,” but on this day his life would change forever. His squad was traveling in their Humvees down a road that they have been down many times. Out of nowhere there was a loud “BOOM.” It was Murphy’s Humvee that got hit by an improvised explosive device. This explosion blew off Murphy’s right leg from the knee up, broke his left leg, and had deep lacerations all over his body. Murphy’s squad transported him to the closest hospital, where he would be bed ridden for the next six months. During his time lying in that bed he would ask himself, “what can I do with my life now?” II. Thesis: In our generation we are hearing many stories of returning wounded veterans that feel like they cannot do the things they once have and need a sense of purpose to get back on their feet; an organization needs to help these young men and women hero’s to live a sustainable and a fulfilling life. III. Preview: In this speech I will discuss the problem with returning combat veterans, then I will discuss an organization that helps these hero’s, followed …show more content…
Some of the programs that the WWP has to offer are Project Odyssey which helps veterans learn how to cope with PTSD. They also offer family support and peer mentor programs to help and support the wounded warrior. The organization offers economic empowerment through career training and to help the veterans seek fulltime work. They provide adaptive sports events, such as golf tournaments and flag football games, to empower physical health and wellness. The Wounded Warrior Project is not like any other organization for veterans because they provide rehabilitative services for the rest of the wounded veteran’s
It’s hard for civilians to see what veterans had to face and still do even after all is said and done. The rhetorical strategies that contribute to Grady’s success in this article is appealing to the reader’s emotions through the story of Jason Poole. Denise Grady’s “Struggling Back From War’s Once Deadly Wounds” acts as an admonition for the American public and government to find a better way to assist troops to land on their feet post-war. Grady informs the reader on the recent problems risen through advancements in medical technology and how it affected the futures of all the troops sent into the Iraq war.
Cory Booker, senator of the United States, uses personal judgements along with pathos, ethos, logos, and various rhetorical devices to convince the audience that Hillary Clinton and Jim Kaine are the most suitable candidates from the Democratic party for presidency. During the month of July 2016, a speech by Booker was given at the Democratic National Convention in New Jersey. The speech was to inform and connect to the people of America, known as the audience, that the two candidates, Hillary and Tim, are capable in holding the position of presidency and continuing the traditions of the past.
Strengths – In terms of its strengths, WWP is a fast-growing nonprofit that is able to reach its financial objectives to fund its many programs. This is evidenced by the fact that the WWP reported that it has a “total revenue of $342 million, which is more than the revenue WWP generated 5 years ago at $74 million” (Clolery & Hrywna, 2016, para.13). WWP’S membership numbers continue to increase, and as of July 2016 WWP has 91,218 alumni and 19,766 family members (Who We Serve, n.d.). The numbers have increased steadily over the past few years and are projected to increase in the years to come. Currently, the WWP has many corporate sponsors, which include the NFL, Amazon, and Bank of America. (Current Corporate Sponsors, n.d.). This shows that the WWP is an organization that helps veterans and is supported by reputable and widely known companies, which demonstrates that the WWP is good at fundraising.
“Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.” This mantra from Margaret Mead is a somewhat humorous yet slightly satirical spin on how people tend to think of themselves as one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable human specimens. However, one English teacher from Wellesley High School takes this critique one step further with his polemic presentation at the school commencement. David McCullough, a Massachusetts English teacher, gave a seemingly somber sendoff to his graduates in 2012, with a speech that contained some unapologetically harsh sentiments. However, by looking past the outwardly dismal surface of the speech, the students can infer a more optimistic message. By incorporating devices of asyndeton, paradox, antimetabole, and anadiplosis, McCullough conveys to each student that even though none of them is unique, their commonality is not a fault they all have merit and should strive to view the world through a more selfless lens.
Veterans have struggles with their civilian life after separating from the U.S Armed Forces. Returning to the civilian life seem to be a big challenge for veterans who have no prior job’s skills for civilian life because they had been influenced from military’s training, have physical and psychological damage.
Fitzhugh calls the attention of his audience by showing how slaves have to be controlled by the rich and powerful leaders. As a pro-slavery activist, Fitzhugh tries to persuade his audience that higher people need to be in charge. He points out that “protection cannot be efficient without the power of control”, by doing this he shows his audience, abolitionist, that they can be in control. He affects the audience by giving them power and control over the weak. Not only does he state that slaves are weak, but he also states that the poor are considered weak. He includes this to make the weak live in fear and so his audience can gain power and protection. By the time this article came out white, rich people were angry that African Americans were
With a voice of emotion, Florence Kelley reaches out to women who were at that time were without the right to vote and including supporters of the women`s suffrage movement, at the National American Women Suffrage Association, to exhibit this “battle-cry” for the movement. As she speaks “to us”, she addresses what may be done “for us” while we sleep at night with the additional use of “we” a total of 12 times in an effort to make this speech seem not as if she is condemning policy makers. In the process of standing for what is right “for us”, she rather unifies herself as Americans to rectify American social stances in a supplicatory fashion. At the time, her voice would have spread to the many levels of society since she was widely considered a
Vet Centers understand and appreciate Veterans’ war experiences while assisting them and their family members toward a successful post-war adjustment in or near their community." Their aim is to serve Veterans and their families by providing a continuum of valuable care that will later add value to the Veterans, their families, and communities. “Care” comes from the professional readjustment counseling, community education, outreach to special populations, the brokering of services in the U.S. Department of Veteran
The daily lives of the common people are continuously affected by the decisions of large corporations, more so in the negative than the positive. In 1962, John F. Kennedy delivered a speech at a press conference to criticize the steel companies who had begun to raise the price of their product. While Kennedy used accusatory statements to denounce the steel companies, he also applied repetition and ethos to rally the people together.
The Wounded Warrior Project does not have any ties to national organizations because it is one itself. “We have an obligation to empower our wounded warriors to lead happy, productive lives,” said Roger Campbell of the Wounded Warrior Project. The wounded warrior project wants to honor and empower Wounded warriors that incurred an injury on or after September 11. You are also eligible for the charity if you are a family member of a wounded warrior. They offer a combat recovery program, This program helps the warriors forget what happened to them and their friends in combat. Another program that they offer is a Physical health program which helps the warriors get back to their full condition. There are also many other programs those are just a
President Obama’s Address to the nation was presented on January 5, 2016. His speech was shown on all of the major network stations. The main goal of his speech was to get the point across to the nation about the increasing problem of gun use. His speech really focused on the issue of gun control and if it would benefit the country. Overall, the biggest idea of his Address was that gun control is a large issue in the United States. The way to prevent deaths caused by firearms can be prevented in other ways than taking peoples guns away. The examples brought up in this Address really stood out to me. The use of personal, national, and global examples really made his speech stronger on the topic of effectiveness.
I pledge to uphold Lincoln’s promise by participating encouraging veterans and their families. When a veteran’s family is having struggles because of family changes, finances, health, or other struggles, the U.S. citizens should step in and help show support. Some veterans have been homeless. We need to provide them with shelter,
This is one of the purest organizations that provide help and assistance for veterans that there is. It was the wives of military veterans started Hope for the Warriors in 2006. While the focus of the charity is to help improve the quality of life for soldiers’ post-9/11, their efforts provide needed assistance for thousands of disadvantaged veterans.
In the year of 2013, my dad was called to deploy, along with his squadron, to go to war in the Middle East. Even though it was three years ago, I still remember it vividly. My dad had gone off to the squadron to prepare, and my mom was in the playroom, trying to console me, for I was crying so much. When your dad leaves to go to war, it’s a big deal. Anyway, we eventually rode out onto the taxi way, where we watched the jets take off. They looked so much more powerfull now that there was such reason behind them. After we went back home to go to sleep, my mom woke us up and we heard the jets flying off to war, and they sounded so powerful. “That is the sound of freedom”, my mom had said. This quote by Kellie Pickler justifies this: “My grandfather is a retired Marine, and I’ve always had a great deal of respect for anyone who serves our county.” These are the people whom we need to recognize, people that work hard to keep our country the land of the free and the home of the
Soldiers voluntarily leave the safety of their homes to protect our citizens and our country. These often unsung heroes inspire civilians to do and give more of themselves to others. During the Afghan War, an American soldier, Sgt. Dennis Weichel, lost his life rescuing an Afghan girl. She and some other children were picking up shell casings from the road as large military vehicles barreled toward them. He put himself in harm’s way to pull her to safety. Many heroic acts by soldiers also happened during the War in Iraq. American pilots are again flying over Iraq’s skies, risking their lives to save Iraqi citizens from terrorists. Their efforts are the latest in a long line of sacrifices made by the U.S. military in Iraq since 1990. Soldiers’ willingness to sacrifice their lives, gives Americans new heroes every day. Fellow citizens view these soldiers with admiration and
