“Education -A Restorative Agent against Psychological Trauma in Children”

Educating the child, parents, and teachers who are in contact with the child regarding the various effects of trauma is useful in monitoring symptoms of distress requiring interventions. Guidance counselors at school may use techniques such as art therapy, sand trays, play therapy, drawings, or other techniques to elicit material the child considers shameful, frightening or abhorrent (Wohl & Kaufmann, 1985). Psychological debriefing is an educative rather than a therapeutic process, relief if it occurs becoming available via learning, sharing and normalizing the post-traumatic experience (Busuttil & Busuttil, 1995). Training aims to give children cognitive and behavioral skills for coping with future stresses. Social skills training involving the use of role play and similar techniques derived from social learning theory may be helpful to children and adolescents who face specific tasks such as re-entering a peer group, returning to school, relocating or communicating with their wider family group subsequent to a trauma. Parents and school personnel can help children feel safe by establishing a sense of normalcy and security by talking to them focusing these points: Reassure children that they are safe, Make time to talk, Keep your explanations developmentally appropriate (Early elementary school, Upper elementary and early & Upper middle school and high school), Review safety procedures, Observe child’s emotional state, Limit TV viewing of these events, Maintain a normal routine. Here are some more suggested points to emphasize when talking to children: schools are safe places, the school building is safe because, we all play a role in the school safety, there is a difference between reporting and gossiping, don’t dwell on the worst possibilities, senseless violence is hard to understand, at times people do bad things that hurt others, stay away from guns and weapons, violence is never a solution to
