In Stevie Cameron’s essay “Our Daughters, Ourselves,” she proclaims “ We tell our bright, shining girls that they can be anything: firefighters, doctors, policewoman, lawyers, scientists, soldiers, athletes, artists. What we don't tell them, yet, is how hard it will be. Maybe, we say to ourselves, by the time they’re older it will be easier for them than it was for us.” My parents raised my sisters and I very congruous with this view. They would always tell us that we could do or be anything we wanted when we got older. However, contrary to Cameron’s apprehension on the matter, my parents always told us how difficult it would be straight from the beginning. They told us how financially strenuous becoming a doctor would be. They told us how
her house. On page 4, it said “Then we'll eat said the woman, “I believe you're hungry-or been hungry- to try to snatch my pocketbook”. This means that even though Roger tries to steal her pocketbook, she still cares for him. On page 6 “Eat some more, son” this implies
In the essay of Mr.Gary Soto, we learn about his experiences about falling in love with someone of a different race. Ever since he was young, he would be lectured that marrying a Mexican women would be the best option for his life. Gary’s grandmother would always proclaim: “... the virtues of marrying a Mexican girl: first, she could cook, second, she acted like a woman, not a man, in her husband’s home” (pp.219). Being conditioned into the notion that all Mexican woman have been trained to be proper women, Mr. Soto set out on finding his brown eyed girl; however, what love had quite a different plan. This paper will cover three different themes Gary’s essay: The tone, the mindset of the character’s mindsets, and the overall message of the
She returns to her grandmother’s house with the baby, and since there are no kids allowed where her grandma lives, she has to be extra careful that the baby doesn’t cry. The reason that she went to her grandmother’s house is because that’s where she lives. Her mother left her a long time ago. Anyway, she spends the whole night taking care of the baby by feeding it with the formula provided in the bag, and changing its diapers. She soon gets really sick of it.

“Greg sat in the small, pale green kitchen listening, knowing the lecture would end with his father saying he couldn’t play ball with the Scorpions.” This made Greg very sad, causing him to go for a walk when he broke into the house where he met Lemond Brown and he encountered some new things such as the neighborhood thugs. “They banged around noisily, calling for the rag man. “We heard you talking about your treasure.” The voice slurred.
In the short reading “Like Mexicans” Gary Soto is undecided about what route he should pursue when moving on into the future. In his early teens his grandmother told him to become a barber and to marry a Mexican girl, Soto’s mother told him this as well. When Soto was in his twenties he ended up falling in love with a Japanese woman named Carolyn. Towards the end of the story Soto realized that the reason his mom wanted him to marry a Mexican girl was because they are in the same social class as him. At the end of the story when Soto is at Carolyn’s house he perceived that her family was different, but they were just like Mexicans because they were poor. Throughout this story Soto crossed three life changes: Culture, food,
hardships and or social barriers. It was not uncommon back then as it is not

I chose to write about Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros because I am the only daughter of three children. Therefore, I can relate to this essay because I constantly strive to make my father proud in everything that I do, along with feeling as though I am alone and not understood by my family. My father is constantly in the back of my mind so whatever I do revolves around how I know he would feel about it. Due to this I am more studious when it comes to my education because I know that he will be more supportive the better that I do. Without my dad I would not have come this far in what I have accomplished because I would not have had to prove myself to anyone. Being the first born and the only girl, my parents and family many times do not know how to handle how I feel or what I enjoy because I am more studious out of my entire family. Because of this I
Gary Soto’s “Looking for Work” is based on a nine-year old Mexican-American boy who wants his nontraditional family to imitate the “perfect families” he sees on television. Television shows seem to have impacted Soto’s way of thinking when it comes to his family; Believing theirs to be dysfunctional. Soto shows evidence of his family being dysfunctional when we see unorganized dinner gatherings and improper manners at the dinner table, as opposed to the ones in his shows. In the story, Soto demonstrates the want for change when he shares a vision of wealth he wants to imitate by stating, “For weeks I had drunk Kool-Aid and watched morning reruns of Father Knows Best, whose family was so uncomplicated in its routine that I very much wanted to
In Kat Stoeffel’s “ Why becoming a dad makes you a feminist?” she is responding to an open letter from AllHipHop site owner Chuck Creekmur. Stoeffel’s main argument to Creekmur is that it shouldn’t take having a daughter in order for you to care about women. She's not against more people for feminism however it makes her skin crawl when she hears about a father talk about what having a daughter has taught him. The overall problem isn't about Creekmur judging Nicki Minaj, but really about the fact he’s only making this letter because he has a daughter and he doesn’t want her actions to rub off on his own lil’ girl.
Mina comes back home only fifteen minutes later, crying. The grandmother is blamed once again for Mina’s actions. Mina reacts to her grandmothers questions of the tears by saying “ You m...
