R-E-S-P-E-C-T Most people know Aretha Franklin’s famous song “Respect”, but what is she really talking about? What is respect in today’s society? Respect is defined in the Oxford Dictionaries as “a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements”.To respect someone, it is not necessary to particularly like them, but to acknowledge their position of power, their rights as a person (Dillion). Respect is essential for human interaction, and yet we constantly see politicians attacking each other in commercials or families on TV where the children are cruel to their parents. Where is the respect in today’s society and why has it gone away? Respect in our modern world has been corroded …show more content…
The candidate shown is actively putting down his or her opponent and using that to boost up their votes. Even our current president, Mr. Trump, has been guilty of disrespecting people who oppose his views by way of his Twitter account. Even calling a decision made by our previous president, Barrack Obama a “dumb deal”(@realDonaldTrump). The lack of respect shown between these leaders is broadcasted all over the television and viewed by many people including children. Seeing our future leaders resorting to that low quality of communication and argument leads adolescents to believe that aggression is the only way to get their points across. An argument could be made that respect is earned, not freely given. Countering that, Dillion states “every person has an unconditional worth called dignity… consequently, we have a fundamental and absolutely binding moral obligation to respect persons as ends in themselves” (Dillion). This means that everyone is entitled to respect because they are a person and have value. Another factor in the decline of respect, is how the interaction between people is shown on TV shows. TV shows in our modern age, like the animated show The Simpsons, show young people acting out against their superiors and even their parents. Looking up to these characters, the kids begin to act the same way. Yes, some people believe parenting to be the real cause, but studies …show more content…
In fact, schools and even some states have passed laws and policies in an attempt to prevent it (“Cyberbullying Laws.”). There are quite a few websites devoted to educating the public on the issue of cyberbullying. One example of these websites is stopbullying.gov. This site, created by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, informs each person of ways they can help prevent bullying and cyberbullying. Which after all, is another form of a disrespectful interaction. As stated on the site, “ Establishing a culture of inclusion and respect,” is the top preventative measure to ending bullying in schools. Along with setting a “tone of respect” in the classrooms (Aspa). This shows that respect is an important problem in our civilization and that it has led to cyberbullying, an already established problem that is known by the general public, and other
Respect is a such a simple concept and a virtue that should be simple to follow. It means treating other people and animals in a dignified manner. Respect doesn’t mean that people need to hug everyone they come across or hold their opinion higher than everyone elses. Respect means treating others as equals and acknowledging that as human
When I think of what respect means to me, my definition is: listening and being mindful of what someone is saying or doing. The dictionary on Google has respect listed as: “admire (someone or something) deeply, as a result of their abilities, qualities, or achievements” (Google). I have never associated with respect with admiring someone’s abilities, qualities, yet along their achievements. The two different mothers in the stories view respect differently as well.
Once tolerance and acceptance is established and taught, bullying and harassment in secondary schools will significantly drop. Aside from the ineffectiveness of bullying programs, “Targets of bullying behaviors are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and loss of self-esteem” (Domino, 2013). Not only are schools being ineffective with their programs, the students are facing the effects of this. “Research has advocated that individuals must work together to effectively reduce bullying practices within schools” (Jones and Augustine, 2015). By creating a kindness program, students will be taught to work together to solve problems, and, in the end, create a better society.
Proper respect for others begins by a person respecting their self. Respect is developed by expressing honor, leadership, value, and trust in a person. If everyone respects everyone someday, the world will become a seventh heaven. It is important to be respectful for safety, to abide by the law, because children are influenced by their elders’ actions, and because God says so. Motivation from peers can help a person realize there is always room to improve the level of respect a person exhibits. Respect was, is, and always will be a positive attribute for everyone to strive for in their lives.
Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
When Otis Redding released his song “Respect” in 1965, little did he know the song would be labeled as one of the top five recordings of all time, and he would not be the artist credited for it. Otis Redding’s song called for respect, but in a way that it was an exchange of money from the working man and respect in return from the stay at home mom. A year later Aretha Franklin released a song with the same title, but reversed the message. Aretha’s version of the song demanded absolute respect from the man with nothing in return but the wife’s love. Aretha’s “Respect’” became an absolute hit and anthem in both the feminist and civil rights movements of the time. “Respect” was the much needed anthem for the movements during the late sixties and seventies, calling for respect and equal rights for women, and equality for all.
With this unfortunate circumstance, schools need to put a stop to bullying. Informing the school and the community on the issue of bullying is the first step in ending it. To continue, the next is to make rules that will prevent kids from wanting to bully other students. Also, creating an anti-bully committee and a bullying report office in schools will help reduce bullying. With cyber bullying being so difficult to detect, we inform parents and students about safe internet use and ask parents to monitor their child internet usage. Bullying is
Although bullying has always been a problem in schools, it has more recently become a bigger crisis with vicious consequences. “However it is defined, bullying is not just child’s play, but a terrifying experience many schoolchildren face everyday. It can be as direct as teasing, hitting or threatening, or as indirect as exclusions, rumors or manipulation” (Garrett 2). Most kids do not think certain actions are classified as bullying, yet they do not realize the severity of the way they treat their peers. What they may see as “joking around” can be viewed as them being a bully, and they may even be hurting someone’s feelings without realizing the effect that they have. This can then lead to school violence, which is a prevalent issue in today’s society. There are many causes to bullying and school violence and many effects as well. However, if dealt with properly, there are ways to solve these prevailing problems.
respect is as much a part of a man as is his own image. This leads to
In three seperate dictionaries, respect is defined as a regard for or appreciation of the worth or value of someone or something. In my opinion, respect goes far beyond this definition. Respect is the cornerstone of the society in which we live. Although many look at respect as simply treating another person or thing with kindness, this word has many different aspects. For instance, I would not give an elder the same type of respect that I would give my peers or myself. Respect is not considered a neccessity in this world but, I can’t imagine a person getting very far in life without this virtue.
James Bowman, a scholar and writer, suggests that, “we are living in a ‘post-honor society’” (Punn). In short, we are living in a civilization where honor is not as prominent as it used to be. Honor was different during the victorian age, that was a time when men lived to stand up for his principles. In James Bowman’s book he explains that, “over the 20th century honor has been largely ‘discredited’ to the point where the ‘word doesn’t seem to exist anymore’” (Punn). This is to say that currently honor is sort of hidden beneath other things such as loyalty and sacrifice. Honor in our society today definitely is not as important to people as it once used to
In the year 1965, Otis Redding released the song, Respect, which became a smash hit for Aretha Franklin two years later. Aretha Franklin’s version of Respect gained popularity for the catchy, upbeat music as well as the empowering lyrics. She was able to achieve this success by making significant revisions to the music, the delivery, and the lyrics. Franklin’s revisions to the music focused on the melody and the usage of different instruments on the recording in order to have Respect become more captivating and memorable. Aretha Franklin’s delivery of Respect uses more power and soul than Otis Redding’s version, creating an inspirational and thrilling performance. Her revisions to the lyrics include rewording several of the lead vocalists’
People receive respect whether they are privileged or underprivileged; the difference is individuals that are privileged often aren’t receiving genuine respect. People treat privileged individuals with respect because the money says, “I’m better than you”. The money equals power or shows a higher status/position in life and people treat elitist as so with no questions asked. These “special” individuals also have a tendency to show little, if any respect for others, especially when the others look of little importance. It seem that the entitled ones don’t understand that respect should be given in order for it to be received. In actually, people don’t respect the affluent because tha...
There is a rare respect that everyone in the world possesses, and that is the
Bullying has always been present within the United States. Although the issue has been around for a long time, it continues to grow and become more of problem. It is said that about 160,000 children within the United States are refusing to go to school because of bullying. Another statistic is that within American schools alone, there are an estimated 2.1 billion bullies and 2.7 billion victims (Dan Olewus, MBNBD). The numbers presented here are outrageous and although there are organizations to stop bullying, obviously there needs to be a new set of solutions. Any type of bullying presents problems to children, “Suicide, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trouble with the law, poor performance in school and work, and lack of involvement in socially accepted activities are some of the difficulties resulting from bullying (Austin, Reynolds, Barnes, Shirley). Of course, there is more than just a single type of bullying. Feeding ground for bullies can range anywhere from text-message or cyberbullying to physical bullying in schools. Also, bullies can begin to strike at a young age and could also be; teenage, middle-age, or even the elderly. Even though there are these many versions of problematic bullies, the largest bullying problems take place within the school setting: a place that is supposed to be safe for children rather than harmful. Although it seems impossible to completely get rid of bullying, these are a few suggested solutions; making the school informed on bullying issues, schools implementing rules on bullying, and having students positively use electronics to stop bullying.
