Bullying at Prince Edward High School is an important topic because schools and parents must educate children about bullying behaviors; it will help all children feel safe and secure at school. As a soon to be intern at a school as a school social worker this affects me deeply. I want to be able to walk down the hall hearing positive language towards each and every student. There is so much that schools can to do stop bullying beginning with teaching kids to speak up and stop the oppressive acts. Children and adolescents in school need to be taught that even if they are not doing the bullying themselves, simply watching an incident without informing someone of authority or doing nothing to help the victim makes them guilty by association. While meeting with the guidance counselor at Prince Edward the administration agreed that there is a significant amount of bullying that occurs throughout the high school. It is reported that the bullying occurs in all of the class levels. The guidance counselor also informed us that the staff and teachers don’t really know exactly how to handle the bullying and there is also a lack of respect between the staff and the students. The guidance counselor said that there is a lot of bullying between the different races in in the school because of the racial divide in the school. She also said that one of the biggest forms of bullying that occurs in the school is cyberbullying. The staff also has a lack of knowledge as to how to help the bullying issues in the high school. By the end of this project the teachers and staff should have an idea of what a child who has to endure bullying usually suffers from, being low self-esteem and their ability to learn and be successful at school dramatically lessens; so therefore that may be a reason why they do not seem to be trying as hard in the classroom. Up to this point support and time are things we require from the school, so far they have only been resistant due to poor communication on their end. Then we would review our plan as well as permission from the principal to set up the actual anti-bullying week. For each day of the week we would have a different activity related to bullying. The first day we would have the students and staff wear their school colors to show how they are united and to show how they care for each other and Prince Edward and have someone in the office make random announcements throughout the day of encouraging quotes made by famous people they would know. One day we were planning on having students make posters against bullying as well as encouraging notes to post around the school. On one of the days we also had an idea to have the students each create a piece of creative writing such as a poem speaking out against bullying or a story or skit teaching bystanders how to help. One of the days we plan on handing out candy with encouraging notes on them, pins and arm bands that say “be a buddy not a bully.” For the last day we would have students put their hand print on a banner against bullying to hang in the school as a representation of hands against
Bullying has been around in Canadian history for over centuries. It has affected the development of many young teens and the growth patterns in forming young adults. It has also resulted in many unnecessary deaths. Bullying has not only caused physical damage but it also causes a lot of mental distress along with psychological problems. It can hinder the growing process of a child and potentially lead to life long permanent damage. In an effort to better protect those who are bullied, harsher punishments should be considered especially in cases causing death and for those who are young, more preventative programs should be instilled in schools.

As shown as a real issue within high school through television’s Freaks and Geeks, bullying is something that needs to be understood and dealt with. In an age with more resources for bullies to use, the consequences are too severe not to do anything about it. Bullying is now stretching beyond the school hallways and has invaded students in their own homes. Bullying has been a part of schooling for as long as children have been congregating. To some it seems like a natural, though uncomfortable, part of life and school experience, while to others it can mean terrifying experiences which spoiled and characterized otherwise happy years in school. Dan Olweus, a pioneer in bully behavior research documented that 2.7 million children are affected as victims, and that 2.1 children act as bullies (Fried, 1997, as cited in Aluedse, 2006). With bullying cited as the reason for violent, gun-related crime in the past few years, school districts as well as national governments have put anti-bullying policies in place. Bullying is a complicated phenomenon, involving more than one child demanding lunch money from a smaller child. It is a worldwide epidemic hitting schools everywhere. Virtually everyone has seen or experienced bullying. With technological advances, bullying is even hitting the internet. Parents, teachers, students and governments agencies alike are attempting to put a stop to bullying practices.

My advocacy topic is bullying. I, myself, was bullied by a fellow female student in Middle School. Bullying is defined as intentional and repeated aggression towards another person that causes injury or discomfort. Unfortunately bullying has been seen in toddlers and continues throughout all school ages. Bullying has very negative effects on early childhood development. These scars can have very long lasting negative effects on children that in some cases have led to suicide. On the afternoon of April 9, 2010 I found myself in a meeting with Kerri Evans, the assistant principal of Pleasant Ridge Middle School, and my son Nicholas. I was there because my son had become a victim of verbal abuse. It was shocking to learn that bullying has become such an epidemic in our school system. “Nearly 1 in 3 students is involved in bullying” (Hertzog, 2010). In a perfect world there would be no bullying. Kids wouldn’t get shoved into lockers, and they wouldn’t be beat up in the hallway. Students wouldn’t talk about another student behind their back because of their shape, size, race, or religion. In a perfect world this wouldn’t happen, but at that moment in our imperfect world it was happening to my son. The question is, why does it happen and what can we do to stop it? “According to a 2009 federal survey of school crime and safety, 32 percent of middle and high school students said they'd been victimized during the academic year, compared with 14 percent in 2001” (Tyre, 2010). Bullying was making its way into my home and affecting my life. It was then that I realized that bullying was a problem that needed to stop. Bullying in schools is escalating and becoming a bigger and bigger issue, and we must take action to eliminate it.
Many wealthy people have put a lot of money in different events that they have thrown to start helping people become aware of bullying and starting to think of way to prevent it. The month of October has been labeled bullying prevention month in the United States. “Groups across the country committed to stop bullying will release new resources, campaigns, and efforts aimed at bringing awareness to this important issue facing our youth” (Temkin). This month long event is to bring awareness to what is really going on in the bullying world and to help the students that are getting bullied find the courage to tell someone so it can stop. This year the Bullying Prevention Month founded many new initiatives such as releasing a toolkit that will help students through the bullying situations and has telephone numbers that they can call.
Bullying has always been present within the United States. Although the issue has been around for a long time, it continues to grow and become more of problem. It is said that about 160,000 children within the United States are refusing to go to school because of bullying. Another statistic is that within American schools alone, there are an estimated 2.1 billion bullies and 2.7 billion victims (Dan Olewus, MBNBD). The numbers presented here are outrageous and although there are organizations to stop bullying, obviously there needs to be a new set of solutions. Any type of bullying presents problems to children, “Suicide, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trouble with the law, poor performance in school and work, and lack of involvement in socially accepted activities are some of the difficulties resulting from bullying (Austin, Reynolds, Barnes, Shirley). Of course, there is more than just a single type of bullying. Feeding ground for bullies can range anywhere from text-message or cyberbullying to physical bullying in schools. Also, bullies can begin to strike at a young age and could also be; teenage, middle-age, or even the elderly. Even though there are these many versions of problematic bullies, the largest bullying problems take place within the school setting: a place that is supposed to be safe for children rather than harmful. Although it seems impossible to completely get rid of bullying, these are a few suggested solutions; making the school informed on bullying issues, schools implementing rules on bullying, and having students positively use electronics to stop bullying.
Bullying against teens is still happening even though there are various awareness programs to try to prevent it. I want to create awareness of bullying against teens of all religions, race, and sexual orientation. Even with the various attention to bullying, the problem still persists despite the school providing awareness, students are still afraid to say anything. Societal patterns today make bullying a difficult issue to eliminate. Starting in 2007, a total of 35 states made laws to go against bullying at school. These laws consisted of a clear definition of bullying, and how schools will be required to enforce uniform standards of conduct. The reason bullying comes as such an issue to me is because I actually know friends that have been suicidal and have caused themselves harm due to being bullied every day, in school and at home.
Bullying is something that is not something new and is actually something that society continues to face.
