My advocacy topic is bullying. I, myself, was bullied by a fellow female student in Middle School. Bullying is defined as intentional and repeated aggression towards another person that causes injury or discomfort. Unfortunately bullying has been seen in toddlers and continues throughout all school ages. Bullying has very negative effects on early childhood development. These scars can have very long lasting negative effects on children that in some cases have led to suicide. It is reported in the CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance – 2013 report, that on average across 39 state survey, 7.2% of students admit to not going to school due to personal safety concerns (https://americanspcc.org/bullying/statistics-and-information/).
The
Bullying has become a major problem facing the United States today. The American Psychological Association reports that roughly 40% to 80% of children are involved in bullying on some level during their time in school. (APA, 2014) The magnitude of the problem can be observed in the statistics. In the United States, a total of 4,080,879 children between the ages of five and 18 have been the victims of bullying compared to 3,892,199 who have reported that they have engaged in bullying someone else. Additionally, 851,755 said that they have been both the victim and the bully. That's a whopping 8,824,833 people in the United States that have been involved in bullying behavior on one level or another. (High, B., 2000 Census)
Everyday, children go to school and learn many valuable skills that are unquestionably beneficial to their youth all around the world. It is a fact that youngsters learn much not only academically but also a lot through the interaction with their peers. Nevertheless, some experiences such as bullying may possibly lead to some serious long-term negative effects. Unfortunately, the society perceives bullying as an unavoidable factor in schooling as well as a natural procedure of growing up. Bullying has now become an inevitable part of school life. The rapid growth of Internet technology has allowed bullying to expand and thus, created a much bigger and worse problem in the modern society. Bullying has been a problem in our society for decades. Although the problem seems almost inevitable, a solution to prevent further victims is urgently needed. The research paper will focus mainly on the various types of bullying, history of bullying, the prevention methods, and the effects on the victim’s health.

A young girl leaves her home and right when she walks out the door, she wanted to turn right back around. She knows it will be a bad day. Every day is a bad day. The fragile girl continues on the whole day all while anticipating returning home. At last, the end of the day arrives! She quickly walks out of school with her head down and tries not to bring attention to herself. They spot her and start to stare with a smirk that is so knowing. The comments and names start to roll off their tongues. She begins to walk faster and faster away until she is at a full sprint with tears streaming down her face. What is Bullying? Bullying is repeated, aggressive behavior by one or more people, and it harms others physically and/or emotionally. Bullies are taught and not born. There are seven different types of bullies; The Confident Bully feels good about himself, he also has a big ego and shows no empathy towards his targets. Social Bully can pretend to be caring and compassionate about his victim when needed to cover up his actions as a bully. (The BRIM Software). A Social Bully also uses verbal taunts, rumor, and gossip as the weapons of choice for their victims. Fully Armored Bully is emotionless and cold hearted and his feelings are buried deep inside so that he can’t identify them. Hyperactive Bullies suffer from learning disabilities, struggles in school, and cannot accurately process his classmates’ behavior. Bullied Bullies (the Bully Victim) is a target of bullies and a bully himself. The Bunch of Bullies are groups of ‘nice’ kids bullying another student. Gang of Bullies are a gang of allies, not friends, working together for domination over a particular area or ‘turf’. They also dedicate themselves to their group and they do not think about their consequences of their actions.

Dr. Romo, a plastic surgeon for teens, does what he does to improve a teens life by stopping bullying. Although this might give the teen self confidence it may not stop bullies because bullying is complicated and usually isn’t down to just one physical attribute. This is why I think The Baby Face Foundation is not a logical step in improving a teens self confidence or to stop bullies.
Bullying has been a part of schooling for as long as children have been congregating. To some it seems like a natural, though uncomfortable, part of life and school experience, while to others it can mean terrifying experiences which spoiled and characterized otherwise happy years in school. Dan Olweus, a pioneer in bully behavior research documented that 2.7 million children are affected as victims, and that 2.1 children act as bullies (Fried, 1997, as cited in Aluedse, 2006). With bullying cited as the reason for violent, gun-related crime in the past few years, school districts as well as national governments have put anti-bullying policies in place. Bullying is a complicated phenomenon, involving more than one child demanding lunch money from a smaller child. It is a worldwide epidemic hitting schools everywhere. Virtually everyone has seen or experienced bullying. With technological advances, bullying is even hitting the internet. Parents, teachers, students and governments agencies alike are attempting to put a stop to bullying practices.
No matter where you go, bullying is just around the corner. There’s no certain age for anyone to become a bully. Movies make it high school the biggest place for bullies to be created; but in the real world, that’s not the case. Bullying is a serious issue and can happen anywhere at any time to anyone.
“Many adolescents are taught not to discriminate or intimidate. However, bullying has increased dramatically in the present era. Victims are left physically, mentally, verbally, and emotionally broken. Also, many children are taking their lives due to not being able to handle the misery from bullying. As a result of these incidents, he or she are left wondering who is at fault, the child or the parents. Therefore, should parents be held accountable for the outcome of their children’s bullying? Parents should be held accountable if their child is a bully. When an adult decides to be a parent, they become responsible for whatever mistakes their child may do, until the child becomes an adult. Therefore, it is up to the parent to know what their child is doing at all times. The parent should show their child right from wrong, and as parents, he or she must remember, children repeat what one may say and do. If parents do not provide their child with these resources, they should be fined or even put in jail. Also, their should be a law passed that requires parents, to go to a parent-child orientation, which will provide parents with resources on how to deal with bullying.
Educators attempt to provide safe, nurturing environments where students can thrive. Any disturbance to this climate can have negative affects on students’ educational performances. Bullying is one such disruption. Unfortunately, physical and verbal abuse are nothing new in the school setting, however, the rise of technology in our country has created a new setting for bullies to target their victims. Cyberbulling, or the use of any number of technological means to harm or harass another, has become an increasingly prevalent occurrence, specifically among school-aged children (Campfield, 2006).
Bullying is an issue that has been around for decades and is something that can affect everyone, no matter what his or her age is. Even though bullying has changed over the years from being physical abuse and harassment that happens on the playgrounds of schoolyards to tormenting over the Internet. The same groups are still affected namely adolescents. Statistically about 30 percent of all teenagers in the United States are bullied in one-way or another (“Teenage Bullying”).
Bullying against teens is still happening even though there are various awareness programs to try to prevent it. I want to create awareness of bullying against teens of all religions, race, and sexual orientation. Even with the various attention to bullying, the problem still persists despite the school providing awareness, students are still afraid to say anything. Societal patterns today make bullying a difficult issue to eliminate. Starting in 2007, a total of 35 states made laws to go against bullying at school. These laws consisted of a clear definition of bullying, and how schools will be required to enforce uniform standards of conduct. The reason bullying comes as such an issue to me is because I actually know friends that have been suicidal and have caused themselves harm due to being bullied every day, in school and at home.
As a society, we often underestimate the damages that bullying cause on children, not just America but all over, and the ones who suffer are the victims themselves. Victims are damaged with the stigma that they are weak, yet somehow have to fend for themselves against something that they have little to no control over. Whether it is for funding, a reputation or any other reason schools sweep their bullying problem under the rug or turn a blind eye, however they have more potential to end this growing issue. To the schools that think bullying is not their problem, they should know that according to heyugly.org, an anti-bullying campaign, “Approximately, 160,000 children a day stay home from school in fear of being bullied.”They also point out

Bullying is a devastating issue that threatens the well-being of today’s youth. Those who are most likely at risk are those who; have a learning or physical disability i.g., autism or ADHD, are underweight or overweight, are gay/lesbian/transgendered, or speak a different language. Of course, there are no specific guidelines of who will become victims of bullying. Children who are bullied experience lower self-esteem, greater loneliness, greater anxiety, and more depression in addition to the already stressful adolescent years. The longer the bullying occurs the more profound the symptoms can become. As a low-level, subtle form of violence, bullying creates an unsafe school environment and can lead to more serious types of violence among students (Whitted & Dupper, 2005).
