Basketball is my favorite sport. When I was a little kid, basketball was my favorite because I thought it was fun. Now basketball will always be my favorite sport because it changed my life.
In high school I was the starting power forward of our basketball team. That year we had a lot of talented guys and a great coach who taught us how to play together as a team. We made it all the way to the state championship. The game was held at the Philips Arena and the whole Atlanta Hawks basketball was there to watch us play. It was a close game all the whole way. With less than a minute left on the clock we were down by 2 points. Joseph Hospital in Atlanta. These kids had sickle-cell and were being treated in a special part of the hospital. I was nervous because I did not know what to say to the kids. The coach just looked at me and said, “Talk about basketball.” He explained that these kids had enough people talking to them about their illness and that what they needed was to have fun and to be kids. So I visited with the kids and talked about basketball. They all wanted to hear me tell the story about how I won the game. I am kind of shy and don’t like to brag so my teammates kept jumping in and making it sound like I was Michael Jordan or something. I just smiled and nodded. Some of the kids told me their story and how long they have to live. Some of their stories were sad but I told them “Keep the faith you made it this far you got this believe!” One year later a few of us came back by the hospital to check in on the kids. All of the kids I had encouraged had gotten better and were able to go home and go to school like normal. Sickle-Cell does not have a cure, but the medicine they gave them made it so they could try to live like normal
