Understanding Dyslexia: A Common Learning Disability

There are many learning challenges out in the world that people face every day, one of which is dyslexia. Dyslexia is the most common learning disability that causes problems in reading, spelling, and writing. It also causes a problem with comprehension and memory. It was discovered by Rudolf Berlin in 1887, when he used the word “dyslexia” instead of “word blindness.” After this discovery the government recognised dyslexia as a disability and started programs to help people become more aware of it. One of these programs Orton-Gillingham; it was the first reading program for the learning disability. It all begins when they start showing signs in their early growing stage. In preschool their reading skills students tend to forget the rhymes or confuse word with the similar sound. Poor reading skill is not the only characteristics this age presents, they also have problems in remembering family members, fine motor skill, and have late developing speech. As they grow older these characteristic may have grown or they might overcome it with practice. Signs of dyslexia are presented during preschool all the way through third grade. Many teachers don't recommend testing a child at this age for dyslexia because they’re still learning sounds, letters, and words. When they reach third grade, if teachers or parents still notice signs of dyslexia they will want to test their child to see if they can get the care and educational support they need. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, some schools don’t have the resources to diagnose and treat those who need help or the parent believes their child is perfectly fine. For example, in Williams Elementary located in Magnolia, Tx, is having trouble finding a qualified teacher who specializes in dyslexia; this means that while they are looking. Most of the students who start high school already know they it and “have learned to cope with hostile behavior of mising formed adults and mean spirited classmates, but too often the damage to confidence and self esteem has taken its toll.” Bullying is very common if you have any sort of disability which is heartbreaking because it happens in your own school and don't know about it. In past years our school would enrolled students in a website that would help student with dyslexia. This website was called Learning Ally it mission is to “Promote personal achievement when access and reading are barriers to learning by advancing the use of accessible and effective educational solutions. Unfortunately, by an unknown reason, that program has been taken down leaving students without help. We have tried to find the answer why but they simply don't
