You’re about to find out! ~What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is a lifelong condition that makes it hard to read. Dyslexia affects reading comprehension, math skills, reading skills, and writing skills. Every one in five students have dyslexia. Dyslexia is not a disease in fact dyslexia means poor language. I looked at a simulation and the letters jump all around except for the first and last one. It was very hard to understand and comprehend all of the words. Dyslexia only makes it harder to learn it’s like an obstacle, but can be overcome. ~What causes dyslexia? Dyslexia is caused by heredity and genes, basically it runs in the family, and brain anatomy, everyone’s brain is different, it depends on how it functions. While he was in college he decided to do the drama/acting class. He LOVED it but, it did not help in any other classes though, so because of his academic difficulties he got expelled. He loved acting so he moved to hollywood. He used his carpentry for support, and ended up making things for Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. “The Extraordinary Characteristics of Dyslexia” by Jake Horner is a definition essay on what it means to be dyslexic. He incorporates his own life story to support his definition and his ideas in his essay. Dyslexia is looked upon as a disability that should be treated even though dyslexia has to do with the way your brain processes the information given to you. Dyslexia has been a commonly known problem in the Unites States. Even though, dyslexia is a mental problem that causes disabilities in reading, most people do not know the truth about it. There have been movies where a person with dyslexia sees letters moving around, yet people with dyslexia do not have disabilities like moving letters around. The truth is that there are plenty of misconceptions. The myths going around of what dyslexia supposedly is, is not the truth. These myths are just misconceptions and the truths about dyslexia are more complex than what it seems like. Dyslexics have different learning processes and different ways of handling the problems at hand.
My family and I discovered I had dyslexia when I was in the second grade. Honestly, it was quite a traumatic event. What was an eight year old little girl to think about a doctor telling her “she was retarded” (that she had dyslexia.) I pondered long and hard about the diagnosis, but soon learned to accept it. Reading comprehension is a skill that has to be learned by most of the population. This includes adults that have been reading for many years. There is a difference between reading and reading comprehension. Read is defined as, “to look at and understand the meaning of letters, words, or symbols” (Read, 2014). Comprehension is defined as, “the act or action of grasping with intellect” (Comprehension, 2014). Even as an adult, people may have difficulties with reading comprehension. There can be visual learning disorders such as dyslexia. There are many learning techniques and strategies that can negate or even overcome these visual learning disorders. This paper will discuss a few techniques and strategies that when used can improve reading comprehension such as vocabulary building, effective reading, and reading strategies. With these techniques the road block of dyslexia may no longer be an issue.
Dyslexia is the most prominent learning disability here in the United State but, it is also the most misunderstood. For centuries, those with dyslexia have been labeled as stupid and incompetent, when in fact they extremely intelligent, excelling in areas such as art, science and music. Due to our lack of knowledge and understanding, we as a nation are ignorant, deeming truth to the stereotypes that have long been associated with this so called “disease.” In order to reverse the damage that has already been done, we must differentiate fact from fiction. In order to fully understand dyslexia, individuals need to be provided with resources that address every aspect of the disability, including what it is, the possible causes, signs, symptoms and treatments available.
