I am Dr. Renita Sun and I am a reproductive endocrinologist. I mostly see patients about fertility related problems. The setting of my practice primarily takes place in low income neighborhood with the focus on women aged 18-30. Nowadays women are having children at a later age. It is understandable that women want to gain their education first before they settle down which is around 30. Starting at about age 32, a woman’s chances of conceiving decrease gradually but significantly. At 30, the chance of conceiving each month is about 20%. At 40 it’s around 5%. I would like to discuss PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and how to educate young women on the issue early. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder and is the most common cause of infertility in women. Women of all ethnicities may be affected. PCOS's principal signs and symptoms are related to …show more content…
It is always difficult discussing fertility with my younger patients because I know the thought of children is either way off in the distant for them or they never thought they would have to make a tough decision like this. Suzy took her diagnosis very well and was even motivated to teach others about this condition which inspired me to use my platform to raise awareness. She is an average young adult. She is 21-year-old female, middle class pacific islander with no previous medical issues. She informed me that her aunt had this issue as well and questioned if this condition is genetic. I did a quite a bit of research and have come to the conclusion that there is no direct relation however lifestyle choices do have a lot of impact such as maintaining a healthy weight. Suzy thought that she had irregular periods because she was constantly stressed and the weight she had gain was from the freshman 15 that never went away. She had no idea it was PCOS and now she has to think about her fertility options at the age of

The endocrine system is very dynamic and has ties to most, if not all of the other major systems of the body. It is responsible for production of hormones and the regulation of them as well. These hormones act as chemical messengers within the body. Through several differing mechanisms, they are able to trigger very specific responses in target cells or organs. This is what enables the endocrine system to guide growth, development, reproduction, and behavior, among many others as well.

Our patient has 4 of the 5 risk factors: low HDL, high triglycerides, high fasting blood glucose, and central obesity. Because of this, she does seem to have metabolic syndrome. With metabolic syndrome concomitant disease states occur that the patient may have, including PCOS, and hypothyroidism.

Giving thanks to the new improvements in fertility treatments, American women are becoming mothers later than ever lately. Therefore, the number of women having their first child are between the ages of 40 and 44 has increased more than fourfold from 1985 through 2012, with the number of such births reaching 109,579 in 2012, according to the centers for disease control and prevention (O’Brien,2014). Women are more likely to conceive during their 20s, the cut off age for trying to conceive is 37. There should be a point where doctors tell you it’s time to stop treatments(cycles), but instead clinics will try to upsell you. What we as women do not realize is the high cost, the process, and the outcome of these fertility treatments. Sadly couples put so much into a process, and can come out with a disappointing outcome. So I myself do not stand by fertility treatments, these things can cause too much emotional distress.
We have all heard stories of a friend or family member trying to conceive but failing at it for unknown reasons. They spend years, thousands of dollars and many tears only to still not conceive. Then, the woman is finally given the diagnosis of endometriosis. Based on statistical evidence and studies endometriosis is the leading cause of infertility in woman of reproductive age. Not only is it a devastating diagnosis but also an extremely hard disease to diagnosis. At times getting misdiagnosed and ignored by medical professionals. Leading to more years of pain for the woman suffering from a very debilitating disease.

This journal was useful for me because it gave me the background details on why women are opting for delayed motherhood by the age of 30 or 40. Accordingly, I was able to build up my points on how it will affect the health conditions of both baby and mother and also the risk of taking that challenge.
