Communicating with people from other countries often makes me bother, and it happens when I am totally not expected about. This is not the first visit to the other country, but talking non-native language in non-native country is quite different from the long time study in my country. Especially, when we face some special occasion, like renting a room, it is very hard to negotiate with people. Renting a room is not a thing I am familiar with even in Japan. One day on July, one rumor among Japanese students became true, that not all of us can have a room in dormitory even if one send request in this April. My friend received a mail from UNR, which said that he could not have a room next semester. My friend and I were just shocked and on that day we started looking for a room.
The most important thing to do when we want to find a nice room, I thought, was that to correct as much information as I can. Therefore, what I did at first is to check every public board not to miss any information that says, ?gRoommates wanted?h,?h Room for Rent?h or ?gHouse for rent?h. I searched the board in Business Building, EJCH, JTSU, and Main library. However, I could not many of them and if luckily I found these were not so cheap or too far from UNR. Then I started to search the room list at Student Residency Service office. There I found one room five minutes from school on foot. I went back to the dorm I live now in a hurry and called, it was my first phone call to person from other country. The call rang, but no one answer. I waited for a while, then the massage started saying ?hThis number is no longer valid?cplease call XXX-XXXX?h. A short tense atmosphere ended, and I felt relieved. I called the new number, but I could not talk to anyone.
After a while, I received new information of vacant room very near from a school. When I was writing e-mail, one of my roommates backed home. He was going to pay a deposit of the room and he told me that the house has some more vacant room available. We went to see the room. There were two vacant rooms; one was on the basement another was on the first floor.
The Civil war was possibly the greatest tragedy that this country had ever faced. Years of constant arguing, compromises and cynical ideas about slavery pushed this so called "United Nation" into an atrocious collision between the Northern abolitionists and the Southern proslavery farmers and plantation owners. The nation suffered enormous losses economically and went into a downward spiral. The reconstruction period began with many leaders stepping up to try and fix this crippled country, but it didn't turn out like everyone hoped. Slavery was still the largest issue and the reconstruction halted because of the disagreements the people faced. After many years of working, compromising and passing laws, the task proved itself to be impossible, as the country remained to be separated. The lack of unity was present because most of the amendments, laws and rules passed during reconstruction were created to protect and ensure the rights of African Americans. However the South continued to promote slavery and "putting blacks in their place" until the 1950's.
There was this rundown, old split-level on the edge of the town owned and inhabited by a young couple. This young couple did not have much money so they had to rent out the basement. The tenant that lived in the basement was a short, old man by the name of Louis. Louis lived there for about a year, but he NEVER came out of the basement. He NEVER answered the door during rent collection but just slid it through the mail slot. After a year, the couple was considering evicting Louis, mostly because they had a fear of Louis and his shady activities in the basement. Also, the couple was due for a baby in the upcoming year and they felt it was best for Louis to go. Louis did not respond well to the eviction however. So, when the couple was cleaning out the apartment, for another tenant, a skeleton fell out of the closet and landed on the floor with a loud CRASH! The couple ran out and called the police. After the whole thing with the police was sorted out, the couple moved out. More families would move in, but on the anniversary of the eviction, the Ghost of Louis would appear and haunt the inhabitants of the house, causing them to move out. The cycle continues today, and no one has seen Louis ever again, but rumor is he died after that eviction.
Overall, they argue that the goals of rent control can be reached if they are
The reconstruction of the south after the Civil War was one of the biggest struggles of nation because of the turmoil and dramatic change in the country. The South was faced with the issue of black citizens and that they will have equal rights that the whites have. Additionally, the emancipation of slaves caused many riots and conflicts because the white citizens did not approve of the fact that their society is integrated. The biggest issue that the South faced was trying to incorporate the newly freed slaves into the society because they are uneducated and are unable to sustain themselves economically. The death of Abe Lincoln proved harmful to the nation because the Congress and Johnson were not able to agree on a reconstruction plan and they had different opinions. The emancipation of slaves was a major milestone in the history of the United States, but it caused more problems than solutions in the beginning of reconstruction.
Have you ever noticed that while you’re driving around Austin that the homeless have become a common casualty to exhibit. I know the first thing that comes to mind is, “How ridiculous, why don’t they just get a job!”It perfectly acceptable to wonder, whether your money would go towards feeding a starving stomach or a drug addiction, therefore your generosity would be put to better use through a charity foundation or simply by offering a meal. The reality is that the majority of people who are homeless are unable to work due to certain disabilities. In other words, the best response is compassion. There is only so far we can do as a community, the major change has to come from a superior source, which is why I propose that the City of Austin ought to step up and diminish this problem. The City of Austin should build more affordable housing and assistance programs because it will help reduce homelessness.
The Reconstruction tried to help restore and unify the United States. The South had drafted new constitutions, they also acknowledged the Thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth Amendments. That action showed that the south was loyal to the US government. Even with that small progress there continued to be much tension between whites and blacks during the 1870s. Freed people of the south were resented by whites for wanting an education and for wanting a better life for themselves, this period of time was very hard and trying for African Americans. This was a volatile time in America’s history.
From 1863-1877, the federal government undertook a monumental task to heal a broken nation torn by war. The policy of reconstruction would take a strong leader, determined to maintain the rights of the individual states, and heal the Union. While Lincoln’s original plans outlined his goals and views for reconstruction, following Lincoln’s assassination, his successor Johnson didn’t share the same resolve and was more swayed by radical factions within Congress and the current economic state of the country to forge his own political agenda.
Wartime Reconstruction: Land and Labor – Due to the North winning the war the South went though a huge change with land and labor. The Freedmen’s bureau smoothed the transition from slave to free man. The African American Quest for Autonomy – Everything the blacks were deprived of they wanted, that was what freedom was to them.
Buying a home can be an exciting experience for anyone. However, in some cases you just might be better off continuing to rent your home. There are many advantages to buying a home. However, it is not for everyone and buying varies from individual to individual. Currently more people are leaning towards renting but this could change in the near future.
He came up with a favorable reconstruction policy for the South that had been defeated (Fuentes‐Rohwer 63). All ex-Confederates were given total amnesty, restoration of the status of the US states that had seceded. The Southern governments that were new had to be approved provided they had legislated black codes which were supportive of the preservation of slavery. Republicans fully rejected the ideas of Johnson and instead came up with radical reconstruction. They continuously overrode the vetoes by the president. The radical reconstruction held that the southern governments had no option but to give way to military rule. Furthermore, the African Americans were not denied their right to vote which was their constitutional entitlement. In March the year 1867, the congress worked round the clock to do everything it could so as to weaken the powers of Johnson. The congress enacted the Tenure of Office Act that weakened the veto of Johnson. He could not remove office bearers of federal offices including cabinet secretaries provided they had been endorsed by the senate (Fuentes‐Rohwer 66). When removing them, the president had to liaise with the
It feels so good to speak your native tongue when you are in a brand new country that you barely know anything about alone by yourself. We talked about everything, but mostly about our memory in China, how ugly our school uniform is, how bad the food in the school cafeteria tasted and how tedious our math class was. I never realized our little conversation can possibly hurt anybody’s feeling.
Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.
In my country, South Korea, when two people communicate each other, active listeners are more valued as we believe that appropriate response and attentive behaviour is coming from the essence of the listening skill. For foreigners who are not from an Asian country, they could misunderstand the intention of senders, if I don’t actively respond to the receiver in the course of conversation as they are not aware of our customs and values. Therefore, it is imperative to place ourselves to someone else’s shoe so we could comprehend how the misunderstanding of intention can be
Each floor, there are 24 rooms and I was told that 60% of residents are African American 30% are Latino and rest of them are Asian residents from the manager. Neighborhoodnear the apartment consists of mostly Black community and there were various incidents such as murder, firearm, and burglary reported nearresident’s apartment. When I walked into the apartment, there was the intercom on the main entrance that visitors must verify their identity and purpose to visit in order to go in. There are two elevators running fast and well. Before I entered the resident’s room, I noticed that doorway and passage way are narrow to accommodatewith assistive device and equipment. Ramps and light are available properly to hallway, entrance and an emergency exit. Each side of floor, there is an exit stair in order to use for an emergency or under construction. In resident’s room, lighting is adequately available (it is not too dim or too bright) and light switches are easy to reach and find. Despite furnitureor clutter is not obstructing walkway, there is rugin the living room that is slipped. Although an emergency button and string are in the bathroom, bathroom is not inside of room and easily accessible. However, there is stable chair with armrest in the tub for supporting and protecting from fall. Toilet with grab rails is also available and toilet seat is low appropriately for
Buying and owning your home is part of the American dream. Although the dream itself has since changed, the home still remains the main focal point. Today owning a home doesn’t necessarily mean a house. People now buy duplexes, cooperative apartments, and condominiums. For some families it could take up to a couple of generations before it’s able to have the capabilities of buying a home. To many people it means a certain achievement that only comes after years of hard work. It is a life altering decision and one of the most important someone can make in their lifetime. The reasons behind the actual purchase could vary. Before anything is done, people must understand that it’s an extraneous process and it is a long term project.
