Renaissance Art
The term renaissance, describing the period of European history from the early 14th to the late 16th century, is derived from the French word 'rebirth'. This period is described as the revival of the classical forms originally developed by the ancient Greeks and Romans, and an intensified concern with the secular life--interest in humanism and assertion of the importance of the individual. The renaissance period in art history corresponds to the beginning of the great western age of discovery and exploration, when a general desire developed to examine all aspects of nature and the world. Art, during this period, became valued -- not merely as a vehicle for religious and social identity, but even more as a mode of personal, aesthetic expression.
The term early renaissance characterizes virtually all the art of the 15th century. Early renaissance artist sought to create art forms consistent with the appearance of the natural world and with their experience of human personality and behavior. These artists made an effort to go beyond straightforward transcription of nature, to instill the work of art with ideal, intangible qualities, endowing it with a beauty and significance greater and more permanent than that actually found in nature. In the Florence and the early renaissance, we have the greatest master of art like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Sandro Botticelli and others. In this period of time the painters almost never show their emotions or feelings, they were more focused on indulging the churches and the wealthy people. In The renaissance period the art provides the work of art with ideal, intangible qualities, giving it a beauty and significance greater and more permanent than that actually found in the modern art. The Renaissance was a time of rebirth, as its name entails. In Italy, more people were becoming literate and more books were being printed. More scientific discoveries were being made and therefore more theories were being published. In this time of intellectual prosperity, art also made a great leap. Perspective was the main change during this time period, and throughout the years, starting around 1400, it became more involved and more intricate. Eventually artists were so adept at using it, that it became the primary way to insert intimacy and feelings of emotion into a painting. This evolution of technique paved the way for later artists to play with new approaches to allow the viewer to experience an image in different ways.
German authorities explained that the areas known as ghettos were made in order to control and segregate the Jewish people. They also concentrated the Jewish people into large towns near rail lines as a step toward achieving the “final solution” for Jews. The “final solution” was the plan to exterminate all Jewish people from German society. The earliest ghetto was established in October 1939, in Piotrków Trybunalski, Poland. Although the ghettos were not Hitler's master idea, they were one of the steps to the process of control, dehumanization, and the extinction of the Jewish culture. Jewish neighborhoods were changed into prisons. The ghettos were initially for the Jews but Poles were also imprisoned. For the time being, Jews would be placed into ghettos while plans were being formulated. Stories were created and told to the locals that the Jews carried illnesses and were a "plague" and that they should be isolated from the rest of the community. Between 1939 and 1945, a total of 356 ghettos were established in Poland, Soviet Union, Baltic States, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Hungary. Jews saw this as temporary confinement but the Nazis had other plans. On October 8, 1939, the first ghetto was created in Poland in Piotrków Trybunalski. Deportations began in the month of October 1941 to major ghettos.
The term “ghetto” came from the Jewish Quarter in Venice that was made in 1516, when the Venetian experts required the entire city’s Jewish people to live in this area. The Ghettos separated the Jews from the Non-Jews and from other Jewish communities. There were three types of ghettos, closed, open, and destruction ghettos. My thoughts are that the destruction ghettos are concentration or death camps. The ghetto was not a Nazi invention.
Much too often in America today, modern music and art programs in schools are perceived to many as extracurricular activities rather than important subjects that are vital to a students learning and skill development. The truth of the matter is that encouraging music and art education in public schools has a much larger impact on student’s grades, academic performance, and the economy than the majority people realize. Within the next year city school budgets will be dropping by twenty five percent, and despite the fact that music and art programs have been showing a dramatic contribution to student’s learning, this substantial drop in funding for the programs will lead to no dedicated money for art or music programs (Mezzacappa). There is no doubt that a cut in funding for art programs will take a huge toll on students overall grades and test scores. Research has found that the studying of music and art facilitates learning in other subjects and enhances children’s skills in other areas (Brown). Furthermore, providing students with a creative outlet can do great justice in reducing the stress from many other classes and even offer insight for students in possible career paths involving the art field. The art industry today currently supports 4.1 million full-time jobs (Dorfman). By increasing the funding of music and art programs for students preschool through twelfth grade we can see a dramatic increase in the education of children across the United States, assist with skill development in young students, and greatly benefit the economy at the same time.
In some countries the Nazis would let the Jews roam freely in and out as they please. The conditions were not as bad if a Jew happened to find their self-living in an open Jewish quarter. Sadly researchers cannot say the same about closed confinement. Germans will usually put tall brick walls to close them in topped with barbed wire. Open ghettos were kept in much better conditions. This would help them do the necessary things as in getting medicine, food, or clothes not saying the things the Jews were allowed the best of the best. As the Jews did not have this privilege in their closed Jewish quarters. Closed ghettos were situated primarily in German- occupied Poland and the occupied Soviet Union. Most ghettos established were of this type. Closed ghettos were kept in some of the worse conditions possible. This lead closed ghettos to have the highest mortality rate. Creeping closer and closer to the “final solution” the establishment of destruction ghettos came about. Conditions were the least of a Jews worries when deported to destruction ghetto. Destruction ghettos were tightly sealed and only existed two to four weeks. Jews were either deported to concentration camps or shot in mass numbers. This started the establishment of concentration camps. Nazi officials could concentrate the number of Jews killed a day. This provided the Jews with knowledge on what now the final solution
The shift between the Middle Ages and Renaissance was documented in art for future generations. It is because of the changes in art during this time that art historians today understand the historical placement and the socio-economic, political, and religious changes of the time. Art is a visual interpretation of one’s beliefs and way of life; it is through the art from these periods that we today understand exactly what was taking place and why it was happening. These shifts did not happen overnight, but instead changed gradually though years and years of art, and it is through them that we have record of some of the most important changes of historic times.
First off the art program takes up to much of the budget some schools that lose a lot of money could be because of the fine arts program. Most schools are trying not to spend all their money, they are also trying to find ways to save their money. Most superintendents recommend on cutting the art program from schools. By cutting the fine arts program they save money in the salaries of employees. In the elementary levels art is usually the first thing to get cut, but on the other hand it is harder to cut when you get into high schools it is harder to cut because some schools need you to take so you can graduate. Jane Alexander, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), once said, “Many children are missing out on something which gives their education context, gives their lives depth and meaning, and prepares them to be the future workforce.” This “something” that she spoke of is music and art education. Unfortunately, she is entirely correct. We are currently seeing in our country a dramatic cut in arts education curriculum in our public schools due to the limited amount of both time and funding. In many cases budget cutbacks mean arts education cutbacks. This limited amount of resources often forces administrators to place a value on the various subject areas. There is always a demand for greater concentration upon the traditional basics: English, math, science, and history. There is also a new focus on computer competency and a renewed focus on the need for foreign language education. Add to this health education, family life education, industrial arts education, AIDS education, home economics, physical education, and business education and one begins to wonder where arts education fits in.
