Remember the Titans is a movie that highlights the struggles of integration in the seventies. At T. C. Williams High School, black and white football players must overcome their differences and come together to succeed. Despite several problems, being at football camp softens the player’s hearts and prepares them for the field. Although the team accepts the integration, their community despises it. This becomes a major obstacle for the black and white players who try to spend time together after practice. In the end, no outside hate or threats keep the team apart.
Characterization plays a major role in the plot of most movies. In Remember the Titans, Coach Boone is authoritative because he cares about his players. For example, when he takes them to the Gettysburg site, he does this as a mentor, coach, and friend. His ability to overcome the racial tensions surrounding him is best challenged when a brick is thrown through his window, endangering him and his family. Regardless of this, he is very persistent and determined to stay head coach. As a result of his relentless personality, Coach Yoast follows in his footsteps and helps change the community’s view on racism. His loyalty is tested several times throughout his journey and he sacrifices everything for his teammates. One of the most significant times he does this in the movie is when he rejects spending time with his girlfriend to celebrate with the African American players. Gerry is very brave as he does not let a car accident—resulting in paralyzation—discourage him.
