A 2000 film, Remember the Titans, is based on a true story. This movie portrays an African American Coach Herman Boone played by Denzel Washington and a successful Caucasian high school coach Bill Yoast played by Will Patton. This movie takes place during period when schools in Virginia were segregated. It wasn’t until the early 70’s when a federal mandate came into play requiring that two schools in Alexandria, Virginia integrate its students. As a part of this change, the Alexandria school board had also decided to hire on an African American football coach, Herman Boone.
Boone and his family relocated to Alexandria, Virginia from North Carolina when Boone was first offered an assistant coach position at T. C. Williams High School in 1971. After accepting the assistant coach position and moving his family to Alexandria, the school board decided to hire Boone as the head coach instead. At first Boone was hesitant to take the head coaching position. Boone felt that it would be wrong to take this position out from underneath another man, as the same thing was once done to him in the past. The town members did not like the idea of an interracial football team. The Titans won all of their games. As time went on, the town members began to accept the interracial football team. The town businesses even began to show their support of the Titans. However, before going to the State Championship game, one of the team members was involved in a car accident. He was paralyzed from the waist down due to the injuries he sustained in the accident. At this moment is when you truly see the team and the town come together. The Titans went on to win the State
He was later appointed head Coach over a winning white coach; he is reluctant to accept the position because a similar situation happened to him when a white Coach had been appointed over him in South Carolina. Remember the Titans was a film based on the 1970s, a time of racial segregation. The Gettysburg Speech, given by Coach Boone, is an attempt to persuade his players to integrate regardless their racial differences. He brings the team to Gettysburg to deliver his speech, hoping to emphasize the point he is trying to make. Coach Boone explains that they too will be destroyed like the men of Gettysburg if they do not end this feud. Coach Boone was able to successfully unify his team despite their racial differences by effectively utilizing imagery, alliteration, and pausing throughout his speech.
Both To Kill Mockingbird and Remember the Titans had their communities play a crucial role into the development of the story. In the towns of Maycomb County and Alexandria, Virginia, many of the blacks experienced racial prejudice to which they became united with their other blacks. However their was always a leader who wanted to change the community for the better. Because of the similarities of To Kill a Mockingbird and Remember the Titans the audience can see how important community is in the development of a story.
Although the film did not examine in detail the knowledge coach Herman Boone possessed before he began his position with the Titans, it shows glimpses into his experience and wisdom. Although there were no battles or gunfights our country was torn in half. There was an issue dealing with race in the United States. The movie, Remember the Titans is based on actual events that occurred in the year 1971. Mainly on the integration of a school called TC Williams High School. When the school was integrated the old football coach, Coach Yoast, was let go and a black coach Herman Boone was hired on. The main plot of this movie is regarding the coaching change in the school and the 1971 football season the TC Williams Titans have.
Coach Herman Boone is the main African-American character in this film. He is a football coach who is brought in by the newly diversified T.C. Williams High School as a form of affirmative action. This character struggles throughout the movie with dealing with the prejudices of his players, of other football coaches, of parents, and even of the school board who hired him in order to try to create a winning football team. Another key black character is Julius Campbell. He plays a linebacker who ends up becoming best friends with a white linebacker on the team. He, too, struggles with prejudices from some of his teammates and people in the town because of the new desegregation of the team. The remaining black players on the T.C. Produced in 2000, this movie stars actors such as Denzel Washington, Will Patton and Wood Harris. One may think that this movie is just about football but its depth is so much more. Taking place in Alexandria, Virginia, race mixing is unheard of until 1971 when T.C. Williams High School is established. When the schools are integrated a new football coach is brought in and the community and students are not happy about it, as the new coach is an African American. This movie shows how people overcome adversity and unite as one to achieve a common goal.
The movie I decided to analyze was Remember the Titans. I examined the dilemmas and ethical choices that were displayed throughout the story. In the early 1970s, two schools in Alexandria Virginia integrate forming T.C. Williams High School. The Caucasian head coach of the Titans is replaced by an African American coach (Denzel Washington) from North Carolina, which causes a fury among white parents and students. Tensions arise quickly among the players and throughout the community when players of different races are forced together on the same football team. Coach Boone is a great example of a leader. He knows he faces a tough year of teaching his hated team. But, instead of listening to the hating town or administrators, Boone pushes his team to their limits and forces good relationships between players, regardless of race. His vision for the team involves getting the players concerned in what the team needs to become, and not what it is supposed to be; a waste. Boone is a convincing leader with a brutal, boot camp approach to coaching. He believes in making the players re-build themselves as a team. When Boone says, You will wear a jacket, shirt, and tie. Throughout training camp and the season, Boone and Yoast 's black and white players learn to accept each other, to work together, and that football knows no race. As they learn from each other, Boone and Yoast also learn from them and in turn, the whole town learns from the team, the Titans. The Civil Rights Era impacted the realm of sports in a great and powerful way. Throughout the mid 1900s, many minority athletes emerged through all odds and began to integrate themselves in the white dominated athletic business. These athletes endured constant hardships in order to achieve their goals and dreams; facing much racism, segregation, and violence. Minorities across the country began to look up to these sportsmen and realized that anybody could attain greatness despite the social troubles of the time. Stories depicting the struggles of minority athletes soon arose and grew popular among different cultures. These true accounts passed from generation to generation, each admiring the courage and bravery of athletes and how important they became in obtaining an equal society. Producers and directors soon found a way to revolutionize the film industry by retelling the racial discrimination that minority athletes faced. Remember the Titans, The Perfect Game, 42, and The Express are all examples of how minority athletes overcame racial adversities in order to obtain the championship. These Hollywood movies contain many inaccuracies that draw away from the true impact minority athletes had during the Civil Right Era. Although these films do depict the racial components of the time, they do not depict the accurate occurrences of the stories they try to recreate.

Boone faces the challenge of being accepted by the community, encouraging them to work together rather than judging and persecuting one another. At that time in Alexandria, Virginia there was an active atmosphere of racial tension within the community between both the African American and Caucasian population. Boone, a black coach, faces the challenge of taking on a new position as head coach of the T.C Williams High School football team. This is fraught with conflict and peril however due to the opposition of those that do not and will not accept the integration of black and white students into mixed race schools. In a move by the school board coach Boone is now unknowingly threatened by the loss of his job if The Titans loose a match. If The Titans are to loose a match Coach Boone will not only loose his job, both himself and the community will loose the hope of ever having this system of integration work. The movie Remember the Titans by Boaz Yakin is an interesting and thought-provoking movie that shows the transformation of people of different races through hardships and pain. One of the people that change entirely through this film is Gerry Bertier, a white American football captain, who starts off with a prejudiced, skeptical mindset taught with propaganda but at the end, leaves with an unbiased, friendly mindset after a series of significant events throughout the movie.
