Regulating Children’s Diets
Recently, many parents have been considering regulating their children’s diets. Parents want their children to live healthy lives, and they shouldn’t be shamed for it. Children’s diets should be regulated to give them the healthy lives they need to live. If children’s diets are regulated they will live healthier and less addictive lives. There are numerous amounts of health issues due to unhealthy eating. First, children who eat very unhealthy can grow up to be obese. According to the center for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevention of obese kids 6 to 19 tripled in the U.S. Between 1980 and 2000. This proves that there is a really big problem with children’s diets that aren’t getting any better. To begin, being addicted to sugar is more unhealthy and dangerous than, many other drugs, such as cocaine. In a study, mice were fed cocaine and sugar and given the option to pick one or the other, and the mice became very addicted to sugar rather than cocaine. This proves that since sugar can be so addictive, parents should be able to chose their child’s diet to keep the from being addicted to sugar. Next, if children become addicted to sugar, they can easily become addicted to harmful drugs or alcohol in the future. Sugar is highly addictive, as are drugs and alcohol, but with children’s diets being regulated it won’t be something to worry about. Our families could do more to encourage their children to make changes in their lifestyle early on in their lives. You can see this in a child who is raised in a family that is not concerned about the eating habits that he is developing, by the time the he enters school it may already be too late. The child could enter depression as other kids make fun of him for not fitting in the “norm”. Then back at home the family may even encourage such eating behaviors to the child. Families spend lots of time being concerned about other health aspects of their kids, but fail to see that being obese can have very powerful emotional impacts on their children.

A person who is deemed obese, is someone who has “a body fat percentage of more than 25 percent in boys and 32 percent in girls” (Lee and Sprague). It is apparent that living an unhealthy lifestyle, as well as eating poorly, negatively affects one’s health. From a young age it is quickly learned which foods are considered healthful as opposed to junk food. It is a parents responsibility to supervise the intake of their child's food, however there is a higher risk than ever before of childhood obesity.
The overall rate of obesity for children comes in at 17 percent, or about 12.5 million obese children in America today (Doheny 1). The number of children who are obese is growing at a fast rate. Most cases of childhood obesity are caused by eating too much and exercising too little. Extra weight puts children at a risk of serious health problems; such as, diabetes, heart disease, and asthma (Smith 1). Although obesity can be prevented, it has become a growing problem among children due to several factors that lead to health problems.
Parents always want what is best for their children. They strive to provide for them, teach them, and to watch them grow into healthy, loving individuals. Despite this many parents continue to foster a habit that may prevent the goal of good health, unhealthy eating. Americans today consume too much fat, sugar, and food in general and its shows; rates of obesity and weight/diet related diseases such as diabetes are extremely high. In order to slow and eventually put a stop to this trend parents need to not only be aware and informed, but also need to take action and institute healthy eating habits from the very beginning.
Many would argue that children should not focus on their weight because children should lead a youth with little worries, yet obesity affects a child much more than people with that argument think. Being overweight can cause increased risks for several serious diseases and even can result in decreased mental health on account of low self-esteem and social discrimination. Children who are overweight also are at least twice as likely to have heart disease, diabetes, and orthopedic problems (Internicola, 2009). Sadly, children are being pressured into unhealthy lifestyles even more so than adults are.
First of all, an increasing amount of kids are becoming overweight because their schools pressure them to eat sugary, fatty, and high-calorie foods. Not only do many schools promote consumption of harmful foods, many schools also actively serve them in school lunches. In 1963, 4% of kids were obese; currently, approximately 17% of kids are obese. Some might argue that kids themselves are the reason for the increase, because school lunches also provide healthier foods. Yung also mentions psychological and social consequences that are associated with childhood obesity. According to Yung (2009), childhood obesity has significant impact on the emotional development of the child or adolescent, who suffers discrimination and stigmatization, as the obese individual is often associated with negative characteristics, and commonly regarded as a glutton and greedy, weak-minded and ill-disciplined. Yung also goes on by saying that the negative factors work against a child with weight problem, they tend to have fewer opportunities in school, and smaller social circle. I am going to use this article to support my research by using the details on the different health consequences Yung mentions.
It causes heart diseases from high cholesterol and high blood pressure, asthma, and type 2 diabetes, and other health conditions. Obese children can have weight related health problems all the way into adulthood. This is something we need to resolve not only does it because physical pains but also psychological issues. Obese children tend to have low self-esteem and other social problems because of their weight. This is caused from the discrimination that overweight children and adults can face in their life.
Childhood obesity that is due to food insecurity has great influence over children’s health and future. Parents are not teaching children how to eat healthy. They feed them cheeseburgers, chicken fingers, and fries. Kids are not being exposed to a regular diet of health fruits and vegetables. Now some people are just naturally overweight, but being “overweight” is not the same as being “obese.” Someone who is overweight has reached a maximum weight limit for their height. When someone goes beyond this maximum limit, then they are considered “obese” (Kiess 1). Research shows that “obesity is generally defined as the abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat in adipose tissue” (Kiess 1). The increase in childhood obesity today is mainly the fault of the parent because they are unable to tell their children “no” when it comes to junk food (Kiess 104). During Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle puts forth a notion of virtue and how one obtains these virtues. Aristotle presents two types of virtues, virtues of thought and virtues of character. Virtues of though, Aristotle says exist in one’s mind. They are harvested and grow from teachings (1103a15). Virtues of character, however, Aristotle says, “none of the virtues of character arises in us naturally” (1103a18). Aristotle argues that these virtues are developed by habit. Once one practices the virtue over and over again, they then are able to gain the virtue (1103a). Basically, he says that the development of the virtuous activity, whether it be generosity, bravery, or thoughtfulness, all come from habit. A few of the most common physical problems related to obesity include asthma, hypertension, polycystic ovary syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and sleep problems (Kids Health.org).
