A brief history of the region.
Calabria is one of the oldest regions of Italy. The first evidence of human habitation dates as far back as 700,000 BC. Around 3500 BC the first villages in Calabria appeared. Calabria became a very important area for the Greeks in the eighth century BC. It was later conquered by the Romans in the second century BC, and after the collapse of the Roman Empire the region was dominated by the Goths, the Byzantines and later the Longobards. In the early tenth century, the Byzantines again controlled the region and expanded the existing monarchy thus helping to reunite the region. Reggio is the center of an important tourist and cultural area, and has a large university. The mountainous conformation of the landscape has produced its peculiar form, squeezed between the Aspromonte hills and the sea. Like most of its surrounding region, Reggio today lacks a well-developed industrial and infrastructure system. The tourist sector is flourishing and steadily increasing during the past decades.
Crotone was among the most important colonial settlements of Greece. Early on it established a school of medicine, famous throughout the classical world and closely linked with the prowess of the city's athletes. The athletes of Crotone regularly earned all the honors at the Olympic Games back in Greece. The mathematician and metaphysician Pythagoras took up residence here. Crotone today has a pristine old center, and it is easy to travel to the beaches to the south and to the Greek ruins at Capo Colonna.
Cosenza is a provincial capital in Calabria. The old town, dominated by its castle, descends to the River Crati, whereas the modern city lies to the north, beyond the River Busento. It is a city with a varied history and tradition, including the Greek, the Roman and the Byzantine
