Writing Through Time Academic writing in my experience can range from a variety of writing styles. You have research papers, analytical papers, fiction papers etc. Whatever it may be usually these styles are associated with a certain subject/course that focus on the given style of writing. Most of my experience in writing has come from English, although I have written papers in History, Math, Science, and just about every other course that is required for students. The past few years have withheld lots of “DBQ” (Document Based Question) structured papers. These would be done in History based classes such as WHAP (AP World History) and US History. Out of the past 3 years, the past academic year (2015), has been the year that has challenged …show more content…
me the most. English IV being the class that all my writing took place in primarily, including the assignment to complete a Senior Capstone Project. The project involved multiple months of planning within groups to find a way to promote a local non-profit organization and show the benefits of the group we chose over other non-profits that address the same topic or issue. We wrote multiple drafts, created a tri-fold containing all the information we had gathered over the course of the second semester and presented this to a board who then graded us based on what they thought we deserved. Summer 2015 has brought me into a whole new realm of writing, poetry.
I am not interested in traditional poetry although, but Rap. Now, when I say the word “Rap”, the majority of the population will think of the stereotypical rap you see now a days, with the “thug” style of rapping. I admit, I do listen to that style of rap, but my true passion now is focused on actual poetry inside a song. This style is best presented by one of my favorite artists, Logic, who has released a total of 2 albums so far in his musical career. Logic, instead of writing of drugs, sex and those stereotypes given to rap, lets his album be a book. The album includes songs for people who don’t pay attention to the lyrics and listen for enjoyment, but every line is constructed with such depth that the real lyricists and nitpickers have something to listen to and analyze as well. I have started to write down various events that unfold in my life and I am trying to be able to express those into writing that has a deeper meaning that is just seen on the surface. I want each word that I press into the paper to have a specific meaning that isn’t visible just on the surface. This is my way of expressing myself, although I still have a tremendous way to come. Writing has never been my strong suit, although I am always writing. My biggest weakness is my ability to interpret text and analyze. During the analytical process, it is hard for me to really read between the lines if I cannot connect to the piece personally.
I connect with songs that express the same emotions and situations I’ve been through in life. I will say my strong suit in writing is being able to write hard, factual papers such as the ones I wrote in History class. I can make an outline, and make a plan to write whatever the topic is, and structure it correctly. In this class I hope I can expand my abilities to write artistically and be able to analyze text on a deeper level and a have greater understanding of writing in general.
In English 1102, I was exposed to a variety of different genres, including, argumentative research paper, an annotated bibliography, an analytical paper, and a workplace specific piece. Entering this class the majority of papers I had written were all analytical, and in this class we went above and beyond the basic 5 paragraph essay. Though each paper had a different genre and style, I learned that each project was similar in composition.
Personally, I cannot identify my exact writing style. I do write with clear, concise, fluidity; however, I have no sense of “personal style.” I construct each written assignment with the intention of being blunt and supporting my assertions with facts and details that will strengthen my argument. After reading Ch. 1 “The Transaction” I agree with that Zinsser proposes: my writing reflects who I am as a person (5). I am blunt and to the point. I get tasks done in the most efficient way. Maybe my personality does come through in my writing more than I thought.
Over my career of schooling my writing has changed dramatically at times and very little at others. Through my years of schooling people have determined my main weaknesses and strengths that I should work on with my writing. My biggest weakness is writing introductions and conclusions they must be so complicated and require so much thought to be defined as good. I excel at writing body paragraphs and explaining all the facts that back up your main ideas though.
Writing papers is one thing you can guarantee yourself that you will have to do in college, along with other educational requirements. For some people, it might be a frustrating experience or a great opportunity to show their knowledge on a given topic; or sometimes both. Everyone has methods that work better for them than others and they learn to embrace those specific methods. Simple strategies such as outlining and good research can make writing a paper a more pleasant and less nerve-racking experience.
Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. I dread writing anything, especially an essay for school, like this one. I’m
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
drafts to lead to a perfect final paper. Able to write on college level, I am going
My portfolio absolutely reflects my understanding of persuasive writing. Persuasive writing is the ability to use certain word choices in order to convince an audience to agree, or a least grasp, the topic that is being written about. My portfolio represents the goals and objectives of persuasive writing. The essays I have written for this course demonstrate that I have certainly developed my critical thinking skills, and also developed, or better yet, mastered my communication and personal responsibility skills; but, because terms of my lack of paraphrasing and analysis, my writing process is not perfected.
Writing for me has always been a love and hate relationship since I could remember. Depending on the subject matter that I was writing about I would enjoy it because it suited my style or I loathed it because that specific style was uninteresting and boring to me. Learning certain writing formats were absolutely the worst part about writing when I first started learning in high school. As time pushed on and I grew older I began to develop an appreciation for writing that I did not have before; which is what led me to taking Writing 101 as my first full-fledged college course. I began this course with minimal writing experience because of what I failed to retain before, but now I am a stronger writer than I could have imagined with new skill sets that enhance my professional portfolio.
On the first day of class, I was not confident in my writing. I was in honors english last year, however, I did not do too well on essays. Being that I never received an A, I assumed my writing was not as good as it should be. Now, I earned a 6, almost 7, on the 9 point scale and am beginning to feel more confident. I do feel that I have been appropriately challenge this semester. I did not find any of the assignments to be too easy. I have definitely felt challenged this year, I have learned multiple techniques that I never knew prior to taking this class. As a whole, I am happy with the experiences I was provided in this class. The last essay I wrote, I was given the opportunity to meet with Mr. Perry after school one on one for help which was extremely beneficial. Also, I appreciate the fact that Mr. Perry reads our entire essay commenting on what went wrong or suggests ways to improve it. Revising essay really helps not only my grade, but also my overall understanding of what I did incorrectly. Overall, I am extremely happy I took this class and I continue to benefit in multiple ways.
I have never had much confidence with my writing, but I always felt like I was strong at creating an argument and proving it, or telling a great story, whether it be fact or fiction. But it has been a challenge trying to stay organized in my writing, avoid wordiness, and keep my writing rational and not filled with too much emotion. The ebb and flow of my emotions can really deter me from staying focused on what I am writing. And sometimes that can really take you away from my point.
Writing has always been a means of expression but also a skill to bring to the professional world. I have found my own writing skills improve naturally as I matured as an individual, however the leaps I made came from active experiences that directly tested my ability to write. This was mainly from academic sources where I had to mold my mind differently depending on the writing. I found this difficult as I was more focused on forming empirical analysis and I was unable to stay on topic. Although I had my difficulties, I am also thankful for exposing my weaknesses. By experience, I have improved in writing a lot from continuously reading and writing different forms of essays, all while improving my writing organization.
I opened the email revealing my acceptance into Northwestern and I immediately began to cry as I ran to share the good news with my parents. Northwestern had been my first choice and dream school. Unfortunately, I did not receive the same excitement from my classmates as I wore my Northwestern t-shirt on College Spirit Day. Being the only student from my high school to be accepted into an elite, private institution commenced rumors on the circumstances of my acceptance. Some claimed that the only reason that I was accepted was because of my race. They ignored my documented academic achievements, demonstrated leadership skills, athletic accomplishments, extensive extracurricular involvement and dedication to serving my community.
My English 1310 course was taught by Professor Daniel Stuart. He taught us the concept of academic writing and why it is important. Academic writing is the process of breaking down ideas, using a formal tone, deductive reasoning and third person. Writing done to carry out the requirements of a college or university on a research based level. It requires a starting point or introduction, followed by a thesis on the preferred topic, then comes proving and disproving of the evidence based arguments.
All through the course of this semester I have taken in a great deal being in English 102. I have improved as an essayist, at any rate in my eyes. The diverse composition assignments were useful to me utilizing exploration utilizing research and making inquiries when I was trapped. My movement has included me composing papers, talking about colleague’s papers, and so on. Going into this English class, I had yet a great deal to research composing, and utilizing rules for homework assignments. It took me a while to handle the idea of it, yet when I did it turned into a valuable instrument.
