It was a week of triumph, a week of joy, a week of winners despite loses. It was the week of the Special Olympics World Games. It was a week where Los Angels, America, and the world took a giant step forward toward inclusion of all. I think the photo story tells it best, as athletes from 165 countries in the world arrived at Los Angeles International Airport and began the pre-journey spending three days in host towns from San Diego to San Luis Obispo, and from the Beach to Palm Springs. They then moved into their athlete villages at USC and UCLA, and began competing in 26 events. Volunteers poured in, and over 500,000 fans in the stands grew. Social media went wild with posts from fans out supporting these athletes with intellectual disabilities. …show more content…
Since my town hosted Macedonia and Barbados, I mostly watched them. They were so good at communicating with each other. Whenever someone would score, Macedonia would jump up with joy and cheer. They even had a special dance and song to do. The part that was really amazing was that even when the opposing team would score, everyone would still cheer and be supportive. I thoroughly enjoyed watching all of the athletes play their hearts out, but I mostly enjoyed how kind they were to one and other. Each athlete not only supported their teammates, but they supported the other teams as well. I assume that the athletes have made many friends from all over the world. It is so amazing to see everyone try their very best, and even if they don’t achieve their ultimate goal, seeing them be happy anyways. It is a concept that should be taught to everyone, to appreciate everything, be thankful, be helpful, and be supportive. If the whole world were to have the character of these athletes, the world would be a better place. I wish the athletes luck in their lives, and I would like to thank them for coming to our hometown. It was an incredible experience to get to work one on one with these athletes and to see them play. It has inspired me to work harder in my sports because I know that even if I don’t get first place, knowing that I tried my best is the only thing that really
The Olympics take place every two years and allow athletes from all over the world to compete against other Olympians. These individuals are given the world’s stage as large television and radio stations broadcast the games all over the globe and are allowed the opportunity to demonstrate their world-class skill as they compete against others with good sportsmanship and respect. Jimmy Carter’s boycott took away the once in a lifetime opportunity for many athletes to preform at the highest level of competition. Renaldo Nehemiah is one example of an athlete whose opportunity to compete in the Olympics was stolen by the boycott. Before the 1980 Olympics, Nehemiah was expected to win the gold medal in the hurdles. Nehemiah states, "Nothing was accomplished by our boycott in 1980." He said, "It was very disheartening, using sport as a way to achieve political ends. . . . It was difficult for me personally. I was 21 years old and the best in the world, but I 've never walked into an Olympic stadium as an athlete, and that 's still hard. It took a lot of years before I could even talk about it." The strong reactions of the athletes to Jimmy Carter’s decision to boycott the games shows that he didn’t have the support of the people who were the most important to the games, the athletes.
...nd how when I was really young I used to play football. Then during practice I got to meet a bunch of other kids as well. In my hometown we had a lot of people from Mexico and I got to know a lot of them while playing the sport. We ended up becoming really good friends during our course of playing and outside of school. I believe that if I would not have been in this sport I would have not met them. I am really glad I got to meet them and experience some of their culture by becoming close with them.
It was the time of year when competition smelled thick in the air and everyone was excited about Inter-House Sports. I was particularly involved in Tennis and Chess but I was really excited about Table Tennis as I had been named Vice-Captain.
The team was ready, we had been working extremely hard for the past seven months for this. We were all in great shape and very rested. A few of the returning players were meeting me at my house to carpool to the final game of the state championship tournament. Everyone knew that the hard work had paid off when we won the semi-final game the preceding day.
The very small percentage of athletes that can make a living off of a sport that they love to do, is a very special thing. The phenomenal athletes that can make that happen are role models for children, teens, and some adults. Sports enthusiasts will quote things from the best leaders, motivators and competitors to share with their children, students, colleagues, and fellow athletes. Being a three sport athlete has given me the full experience of being around those tremendous athletes. I thoroughly enjoy playing sports, I have since I was a little boy, and sports are a huge part of my family. At all family gatherings after we eat, have fun outside, we gather around the table or the television to either talk of sports or
The movie we watched showed all the emotions that can come from sport. Whether it would be a gratifying moment with a win for your team, or a devastating moment with a loss. That is what makes you grow when you are a younger kid growing up. A kid who can handle a loss in his life with the same dignity as a win will become a better person in the future.
The Olympic Games are the leading worldwide sport event that held every 4 years, featuring thousands of international athletes from more than 200 nations participating in a variety of sports competitions. Although the Games are about winning the sports competitions, they also provide a platform for the nations throughout the world to learn different cultures and share uniqueness. The Games are important, and have to be held because they transmit a message of friendship and peaceful between nations.
In the realms of American literature, two iconic characters, Willy Loman from Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" and Walter Lee Younger from Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun," stand as pillars of exploration into the human condition, aspiration, and the pursuit of the elusive American Dream. These characters navigate the tumultuous waters of ambition, family dynamics, and societal expectations, each bearing a unique set of dreams, desires, and motivations. While both Willy and Walter Lee share the common goal of achieving success and stability for their families, their paths, motivations, and eventual outcomes diverge significantly. This essay will delve into the multifaceted layers of characterization to dissect the similarities
The Olympic Games plays a significant role in the world. The relationship between it and host countries is important to investigate for comprehending cultural studies. According to Xu and Kirby (2008), the Olympic Games has a considerable impact on the expression of national identity. For example, London applied this approach to promote its national identity. This can be discovered from the BBC video called James Bond escorts The Queen to the opening ceremony in 2012 (2012): an amiable identity is perceived by the audience through presenting corgi at Buckingham Palace. Moreover, China is no exception. There is an image about the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics, it shows a spectacular drumming performance. In addition, an article about
The Olympic Games. The biggest international sports competition in which the worlds’ best athletes compete from all around the world to win medals for their countries. The Olympics have been a worldwide tradition since the eighth century BC, but it has hardly benefited us as a species. Every time we have the Games, our resources are abused in order to create the Olympics we desire. Huge amounts of money are used to build venues and make medals, only leading up to the countries who host the Games going into debt afterwards. There are only rare cases in which the countries earn money from hosting the Olympics, but most of the time the debt that they get themselves into take years, or even decades to pay off. You might ask yourself, why do we even host the Olympics, if it has these huge disadvantages? The answer is because we want pride for our countries, no matter how temporary it is. Knowing this, we can safely say, that the Olympic Games do not help us grow as a species.
They did this at great risk, but they were not going to allow an unruly leader to ruin a global event. It proved a good idea to compete because these athletes were able to put the attention they received towards the country they were representing. This was good
Volunteers are the backbone of organizing a strong and successful Olympic Games. They are the reason each Olympic Games runs smoothly and are always enjoyable to watch. What these volunteers might not obtain with money, they do obtain in a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We are able to look at past successful Olympic Games volunteer programs such as Sydney and London and construct our own for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Many life lessons can be taught through sports. Children can learn the importance of work ethic, working with others, perseverance, and the list goes on. There are studies that have shown that kids who are involved in athletics are more successful in the business world. It is only when parents turn the sporting events into an ultra-competitive requirement for their child that it can become detrimental. The lessons that sports teach kids about real life is one of the greatest benefits that can be gained from sports. Because so much can be learned through sports we need to make sure that we put focus on teaching lessons through sports rather than making it all about winning. It is a sad when parents turn a great beneficial thing into something that can be harmful for their children.
Giving back to the community and aiding in the growth of young athletes makes me feel grateful for the fact that I can be there to support them. If I was not around I would not have been able to see my brother graduate and become a marine. Neither could I have traveled to Hong Kong and experienced my mum’s family kindness and generosity. If my family had decided to stay in Wales and not immigrate to America, I would not be able to enjoy the California beaches that I have come to adore. Being alive is one of the greatest gifts and the choices that I have made I do not regret. Fore without them I would not have come to know my friends, extended family and athletes that are now in my life. I accept all the ups and downs that come with the life I live because without the bad it is hard to tell what is good with the world. Sometimes a scraped knee or a bad performance is just what a person needs to remind them just how great the rest of their life
In conclusion, it is explicit that sports is a positive influence on athletes, spectators and the world as a whole as it teaches imperative life lessons as well as allows its participants to experience enjoyment, fulfilment and gratification. As mentioned previously sports enables its players to bring out the best in others and create unity amongst groups as team work is so essential. This highlights the views I have in conjunction with the views of Joe Humphrey.
