Volunteers are the backbone of organizing a strong and successful Olympic Games. They are the reason each Olympic Games runs smoothly and are always enjoyable to watch. What these volunteers might not obtain with money, they do obtain in a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We are able to look at past successful Olympic Games volunteer programs such as Sydney and London and construct our own for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Volunteering in Sydney was not as prevalent as it is now. Organizers of the Sydney 2000 Olympics were hoping the Games would spark an interest in future volunteer endeavors. A lot of the volunteers were first time volunteers. The volunteer program was called GamesForce 2000. There were between 43,000 and 47,000 volunteers.

Out of 250,000 applicants, 70,000 volunteers were selected. The London volunteers had a special title called the Games Makers. Jean Tomlin, Human Resources Director at LOCOG, said the committee decided to give the volunteers a special name since they are such an integral and necessary part of the Games. The name reflects what an important role these people have and how they are essentially the backbone of the Olympic Games. Sebastian Coe, Chair of the London 2012 Organizing Committee, stated “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Olympic Games and pat of the DNA of thousands of people in this country.” (International Olympic Committee 2010) London is also the first city that secured a sponsor for their volunteer program…McDonald’s. McDonald’s and the London Olympics created a $1.2 billion sponsorship where McDonald’s lead and implemented the volunteer program. (Nichols and Ralston) London had a two-phase action plan for recruiting volunteers. The first phase was focused on disabled groups and sport specialists. The second phase of recruitment focused more on the general public and general volunteers. Throughout the UK, there were 9 regional recruitment centers where all volunteers were interviewed face-to-face. Orientations and training events were held on the weekends so students and individuals with jobs were able to attend. There were only 3 training events overall, all held in London. (Nichols
Since 776 BCE, the Olympics have been a way for people of different cultures to come together and compete in friendly competition. In 1892 the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, although it had been over a thousand years since the last game it still had brought together an assortment of different religions and ethnic groups together. Many factors shaping the Olympic Games reflect the changes that have taken place in our world since the last game in 393 CE in Greece such changes include woman’s suffrage, global economy, world wars, and proving competency.
In December of 1979 Soviet forces began to invade Afghanistan and make their first attempt at grabbing new land since World War II. Jimmy Carter, who was the president of the United States at the time did not support the Soviet’s invasion of Afghanistan and decided to boycott the 1980 Summer Olympics hosted by the Soviets in Moscow. He revoked the passports of all American athletes, did not allow any U.S. Olympic athlete to attend the summer games and encouraged other countries to do the same. However, Jimmy Carter’s choice to boycott the 1980 Olympics held in Moscow was ultimately a failure because it failed to gather a large amount of support, it was ineffective in having any influence or impact on the Soviet Union’s involvement in Afghanistan,
...lps the organisation is it gives them free work as they don't have to pay for the volunteer. Also the organisation can employ more people as they have someone working and doing jobs for free and with the money they save from the volunteer they could use that on either raising wages or hiring another worker. It also promotes the organisation so other volunteers will come and the organisation will gain more workers and save a lot more money as they will have people working for free so the work will get done faster.
...e school, such as; Pelotonia, Light the Night for leukemia and lymphoma, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, etc… For many of these organizations I have volunteered more than once. Volunteering at Light the Night has a story. For my 16th Birthday party, I wanted to have my friends and I volunteer in the day while having fun at night. So I had 7 boys and girls, along with me, volunteer for Light the Night, organized by me. The party was a huge success and a lot of fun. I look forward to organizing more volunteer opportunities for my friends and I.
The Olympic Games are the leading worldwide sport event that held every 4 years, featuring thousands of international athletes from more than 200 nations participating in a variety of sports competitions. Although the Games are about winning the sports competitions, they also provide a platform for the nations throughout the world to learn different cultures and share uniqueness. The Games are important, and have to be held because they transmit a message of friendship and peaceful between nations.
With over two hundred countries participating, the Olympic Games is easily considered as one of the largest multisport event known to history. The Olympics are held at a different country, and even more rarely at the same city. For a country to be chosen to host the Olympics, the country’s National Olympic Committee (the country’s representatives for the Olympics) nominates a city (from the country they represent) that they think has potential in hosting the Olympics nine years prior to when they wish to host the Olympics. It is a two year process that consists of: Application Phase, Candidate Phase and the Election of the Host City. The country that wins the election is given seven years to prepare for the Olympics. (International Olympic Committee, n.d., p. xx-xx) The hosting country expends billions of dollars, usually money they don’t have, preparing for the Olympics. Then the question is raised 'why would a country go through so much trouble and spend an outrageous amount of money to host this event?' Throughout this discussion paper it will address all the pros and cons for a country to host the Olympics. It will also see if a smaller sports event can produce the same benefits the Olympic offers with less cost and risk.
The Olympic Games plays a significant role in the world. The relationship between it and host countries is important to investigate for comprehending cultural studies. According to Xu and Kirby (2008), the Olympic Games has a considerable impact on the expression of national identity. For example, London applied this approach to promote its national identity. This can be discovered from the BBC video called James Bond escorts The Queen to the opening ceremony in 2012 (2012): an amiable identity is perceived by the audience through presenting corgi at Buckingham Palace. Moreover, China is no exception. There is an image about the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics, it shows a spectacular drumming performance. In addition, an article about

Modern Day Olympics are a huge tradition that sweeps the screens of televisions across the world. Competitors take the arena with uniforms that dawn their countries colors and designs that are meant to resemble their designated flag. For months the news is centered around the games; the preparation, the athletes, and of course the competition. Countries aren 't obsessed, they are inspired and full of pride seeing athletes from their country compete and show their incredible skill. This tradition dates back to ancient Greece where the games began. Tony Perrottet writes about the traditions of the ancient game in his book The Naked Olympics.
The Olympic Games. The biggest international sports competition in which the worlds’ best athletes compete from all around the world to win medals for their countries. The Olympics have been a worldwide tradition since the eighth century BC, but it has hardly benefited us as a species. Every time we have the Games, our resources are abused in order to create the Olympics we desire. Huge amounts of money are used to build venues and make medals, only leading up to the countries who host the Games going into debt afterwards. There are only rare cases in which the countries earn money from hosting the Olympics, but most of the time the debt that they get themselves into take years, or even decades to pay off. You might ask yourself, why do we even host the Olympics, if it has these huge disadvantages? The answer is because we want pride for our countries, no matter how temporary it is. Knowing this, we can safely say, that the Olympic Games do not help us grow as a species.
On April 6, 1896, the Olympic Games are reborn in Athens after being banned by the roman Emperor Theodosius I for 1,500 years. King George I of Greece welcomed the crowd of about 60,000 spectators and athletes from 13 nations into the competition with, “I hereby proclaim the opening of the first International Olympic Games at Athens.” The first Olympic Games were held in the city of Elis in 776 B.C. The Olympics were at least 500 years old at the time. Every four years, the ancient Olympics were to be held during a religious festival honoring Zeus, the Greek god. In the beginning, the events were limited to foot races, but eventually numerous events were added, including boxing, wrestling, horse and chariot racing, and military competitions. The Pentathlon was introduced in 708 B.C., which featured events like the footrace, the long jump, discus and javelin throws, and wrestling. However, the Olympics declined in 393 A.D. due to the rise of Rome. Theodosius I abolished the games in effort to suppress paganism in the Roman Empire.
The most visible aspect of the uniform was the plain tee-shirts worn by the volunteers with the ETSW logo on the chest. The volunteers at the sports championships could have been outside for long periods and during the week there was heavy rain. In most cases, weather-efficient clothing would have been more suitable to cope with the unpredictable climate. In addition, public engagement volunteers rate much higher satisfaction than the event makers in the satisfaction and importance of the application process. Volunteers need to complete an application form and the selection process requires a systematic filtering system to match skills and experience with the roles needed to be filled.
Unless you have zero interaction with digital technology, which is unlikely since you are reading this blog post, you’ve most likely heard about the latest Pokémon Go craze. The new GPS-based augmented reality game is drawing more attention from consumers and the media than even the upcoming Rio Olympic games or presidential election.
Volunteering benefits a person by building connections with peers, improving family life, expanding career skills, overcoming self doubt, having lasting life impressions, and creating new opportunities. Just a small act can make a huge difference in someone’s life. The future is dependent on the individual person and the people they surround themselves with. Just a few hours will change both the volunteer’s life and the one that is in need.
