Helping Hands When I think of Social Work I think of the wellbeing of others and how they deserve to have all of the resources needed to have productive opportunity. When I first began college I started as a Pre-Nursing major whose intent was to work in a Juvenile or an asylum setting. As my freshman year came to an end, I noticed that I only wanted to work in those settings so that I could help advocate for those who were not able to have a voice of their own. I later noticed that nursing was not the field of study that would allow me to express my true intensions for helping people. Now that I am entering my junior year of college and being that I have taken Introduction to Social Work I feel that I have truly found my calling. Being someone who is passionate and concerned about everyone’s situations I find that I am a great asset to the Social Work …show more content…
Child welfare is services designed to ensure that children are safe and that families have the necessary support needed to care for their children (Child Welfare Info Gateway, 2012). The current state of this issue is that it is not being used as well as it could be. In the school system there are many children who are not safe at home or who are not being properly taken care of and schools are failing to report the issues to CPS. Those that think keeping quite will help the situation are just making the situation progress. If CPS knew of the issues some of the children face they can get involved and possibly help the individuals or families. Due to the lack of reports that CPS does not receive many of those children end up taking their anger out on others or doing petty crimes that end them up in the Juvenile system which just created an even bigger problem. The job of a social worker in this issue is to help the child and provide the family with helpful resources that will stop the problem from
I knew I loved to help others but it was not until I was an emerging adult that I knew what my calling was. My devotion to improve the quality of life for those who are disadvantaged is one of the reasons I have chosen to pursue a Master’s in Social Work. After obtaining my masters, I plan on diversifying my masters by getting licensed and becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to study social work because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance to combine helping people 's mental well being with their physical
Being given the opportunity to intern with the staff at the Family Resource Center in the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) has been a tremendous learning experience thus far. The opportunity has truly surpassed my expectation of what I imagined the journey of internship would be like and how it would help me to evolve into the professional arena as a social worker. I see myself transforming and viewing the community in which I live, the clients served, those deprived, and the tremendous job that we as social workers are tasked with to advocate for those in need from a more open-minded perspective. By enhancing and developing my personal and professional skills, such as active listening, observation, and professional comportment, I will be

Overall this semester, I believe my writing in this course has been one of my strongest areas and I am excited to keep getting better at this skill. With my mother’s help during middle and high school, my papers have improved significantly and now I think I have a firm grasp on writing for various disciplines, but particularly professional settings like social work. I picked up on APA format quickly after doing MLA for several years and it now feels like second nature to me. There are certainly still formatting areas to improve upon and learn more about, but at this stage, I think I am progressing steadily. Thirdly, I am able to find appropriate sources easily to reference in my activity analyses, which is crucial as I advance in the program.
Their job is to mend situations best way possible. Most people believe social workers are horrible because how they are portrayed. They are always seen taking someone’s child(ren) with a parent fighting to keep them. It does not help that social media gets involved making matters worse just so that they can receive a bigger audience. An individual does not see many things on social media about all the good things social workers do for others. I feel as though if individuals were more open minded they will be able to see the good deed that is accomplished all the time. In order to want change there has to be individuals working for that change, instead of just talking about
Being compassionate is a main aspect of who I am as a person. Not only do I care about my friends and family, but also my community and the world. Ironically, I’m shy and introverted, but that certainly doesn’t mean I don’t want to express my concern about the wellbeing of others. In order to grow as a person and expand this personal aspect, there are goals I want to accomplish. I want to make an impact in this world- even if it’s minor. My compassion has led me to choose being a social worker as my career and work for a non profit organization.
I had the opportunity to spend my service learning hours with an amazing young lady by the name of Paige. Paige is 25 years old and has a twin brother and a younger brother who she recently lost to suicide. She came into this world prematurely, 3 months before her due date and weighed 1 pound 12 ounces. From birth Paige had complications she almost lost her life and required open heart surgery at 3 days old. Throughout her life she has needed 19 surgeries on her legs, back and arms. Paige has Cerebral Palsy.
My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.
Working with others and improving own learning and performance are highly essential skills in social work. In this essay I will reflect on how well I have developed these two skills and what I need to do to improve them.
Research is a necessity when it comes to providing services. Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. It provides social service agents with ways to identify problems within their clients, communities, organizations, and the government. Also it helps them to create ways to aid in effective change. It is very beneficial when a social worker needs to "assess the needs and resources of people in their environments, evaluate the effectiveness of social work services in meeting people
Becoming a social worker was in my spirit long before I even knew what being a social worker meant. As a young child, I recall being deeply moved by things that I perceived as unjust, unfair, or just simply not ok. Why was there a man sitting on the street corner asking for food? Why did the little girl at school not have the right kind of clothes to keep her warm during the winter? Why were soldiers being depicted in movies …. What could be done to help these people? I would ask these questions, and many others, to any adult who would listen. Their answers never seemed to satisfy me.
I view social work as a helping profession for those who have a big heart. The social work profession offers people opportunities to receive assistance to make changes in someone’s life. A social worker finds and provides resources to a community that may be lacking due to disparities. A social worker assists those who are willing to create changes in their lives to enhance their well-being. I chose social work as a profession because I consider myself as a helper. I truly care about people. I encourage people to overcome their struggles. I sometimes look at myself as a social worker. A social worker has influences on other's lives. I have noticed about myself that I am always suggesting options or giving advice to help make a situation better.
The mission and purpose of social work are to safeguard the needs and wellbeing of individuals or a group of people experiencing poverty or other social conditions. Specifically, the role of a social worker is to tackle social inequalities and use their political and social voice to handle these issues, while giving at the same time a platform to those that are vulnerable, oppressed or living under marginalized or poor conditions. Furthermore, the purpose of social work is to empower people whom for certain circumstances has become victims of both structural and individual inequalities. Thus, the purpose and mission of social work relates to my field of interest, which is clinical social work because it’s my job as a clinical worker, to enhance
When I approached my client and asked if I could use the FIT with him, he was a hesitant at first, because he really did not want to talk about certain topics that were going to make him emotional. I explained to him that we did not have to proceed with the FIT if it was going to make him uncomfortable, but I did inform him that I had to carry out this intervention as part of a grade. He then agreed to contribute because he said that I was helping him with finding permanent housing, so he was going to help me out, but I just think he felt sorry for me.
families, and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. Social workers are change agents and because of that, they aim to help people develop their skills and abilities to use resources provided to them to strengthen and improve their lives and communities to resolve problems.
