Listening is a very important and hard skill to learn because there is a lot that goes into making a good listener. In order for us to fully understand the process of listening there are ways we need to break it down. You must be able to master these different skills in order to learn how to listen. One of the biggest things I personally do is make assumptions about what things specifically mean. I make my own judgement of an event that takes place and I put what I think the meaning behind it really is. This in return can make me not understand situations fully because I wasn 't listening in the proper way. For example, back my husband and I first got together we had a lot of communication issues because I’d take the things that he said wrong. One specific example of this is when we talked about having kids. He had already had one child in a previous relationship and the mother ended up walking away from them both. She was a wonderful teacher that went through a lot of information within one day. This in return, made it so you really had to study for the quizzes and homework that she would give out during the week. Now during this time I thought that this class was going to go smoothly and that I would just get it down without any troubles. But that wasn’t the case. I had a really hard time with our weekly quizzes and making sure I got a good grade. So when the teacher asked to talk to me after class I started to panic. This is when I realized that this criticism would help me within her class and make it so I was more successful within the learning experience. So when she pulled me aside she gave me some great tips on how to study for the quizzes and some tools that I could use to make sure I did well within the class. On the 1st of November 2013, I performed my first simulation on the module, Foundation Skills for Nursing. This simulation was on checking for vital signs in patients particularly, measuring the blood pressure (BP) which is the force of blood vessels against the walls of the vessels (Marieb and Hoehn, 2010). We also measured the temperature, pulse and respiratory (TPR) rates of a patient. This simulation’s objective was to engage us in practising some basic observation techniques taken on patients in and out of hospitals and to familiarise us on some of the tasks we will be performing when in practise. I will be applying the “What”, “So what”, and “Now what” model of reflection in nursing by Driscoll (2000).
It could also be a parent at home criticizing you about a grade to do better in school. When a coach would say something to me that would sting, it would motivate me to do better. I would notice when the coach would say the same thing to a team mate they would get upset and cry. I never understood why they would not just better themselves, instead of pouting over a simple criticism. This is because of differential sensitivity. Differential sensitivity is “the idea that some people are more vulnerable than others to particular experiences” (Berger, 2010, p.21). I was able to take this criticism from the coach because I was used to having someone at home, criticizing my weaknesses, so that I could better myself. When someone criticizes me, I do not take it to heart because I work harder on that subject to show them that I can do better. The other team mate was more sensitive in the situation and took it to heart. This may have been because the team mate was going through a sensitivity period. Some small comments to children can still affect them later in life, but some may forget about it an hour later. The Listening Project was a social experiment where a group of people traveled the world and asked people what they thought about America and simply listened to their responses. This experiment provided very strong responses both positive and negative from different groups of people while others had a very vague ideas or thoughts about America. By just listening to these people respond they were able to get a better understanding how people all over the world feel about America. This film helps answer two very important questions, why is it important to listen to what others think and what does it mean to be a world citizen. Also it highlights key concepts of communication, skepticism, empathetic listening and vividness.
Before I started this class I never knew what sociology was. I thought I knew, but I actually didn’t. I thought it was some boring study about the society that we live in, but I was proven wrong by this course. Through many different concepts taught I have been able to understand what sociology really is, and how to apply it to my daily life. There were many topics that we talked about in class that I can apply to my life be it school, work, home. Some of the many topics we talked about that really spoke to me were sexuality, race, and gender.
Up until this year, before taking the class intermediate composition, I thought I was a terrible writer. I was right. Writing isn’t something that I enjoy doing, nor am I good at. Writing is difficult for me because I’m not very good at explaining things in a professional manner, that can be easily well written. While writing you are expected to make little to no mistakes, which is not something I’m great at. I am so much better at explaining things with verbal words rather than written words. I had not taken any extra writing classes before this year rather than the mandatory ones. Like I had stated before, I hate writing, with a passion. The thoughts running around in my head were telling me that this essay might be a little better than the pre-assessment. After all, Mrs. Robinson had proclaimed she graded harder to teach us, but there were still doubts in my head. I thought to would write something personal, since that was what I was used to and it worked well for me. Upsettingly, I spent time on this essay but didn’t use all the resources to my benefit. I didn’t read it aloud after being finished and go back and check to see what I wrote made sense. Figured that out later
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
Throughout this semester I have written several essays and journals using techniques both important and unfamiliar to me. This class helped me use these techniques and steps that are involved in creating and formalizing an essay. The writing process of an essay includes information gathering, creating ideas, and writing it on paper to create a cohesive and organized paper. In complete certainty I can say I lack many of the skills necessary to create such a paper, but during this course I have learned some writing methods which I believe have improved my essays. The essays and journals in this portfolio reveal both my strengths and weaknesses in my writing and how I have both continued to make the same errors and improved in other areas.
Throughout my life I have had struggles communicating to other individuals, because instead of having a normal conversation with another person, it seems I am only part of that to be a listener. When I started thinking about this topic I realized that the fault didn’t lay on the other person but on me for not being able to express my experiences in the simple way other do. Listening skills allow one to make sense of what another person is saying. In other words, listening skills let you to understand what someone is "talking about”. It requires concentration so that your brain processes meaning from words and sentences.
Listening is a big part of communicating well with others. Take time to carefully listen to what others are saying, and also take time to observe their nonverbal communications. A good listener does not interrupt the person while their talking. they make eye contact with the person speaking. they provide the speaker with their full attention, avoid unnecessary distractions, and try to understand the other persons point of view by being empathetic.

It is what we choose to do and it requires more work than speaking. Oftentimes, people simply misunderstand the difference between listening and hearing. Hearing is a passive process that takes in sounds and noises and listening is what you choose to do. This selective process includes 5 phases that can be acquired for us to become effective listeners in the future. The 5 phases are attending, understanding, remembering, critically evaluating (listening), and responding. The skill of listening is a skill that I believe everyone should have but most people lack. Many people do not realize that listening is not merely the act of hearing a sound but of paying close attention to what someone is saying and trying to understand the message that they are trying to relate to you. Most times people say they are listening when in all actuality they are merely hearing you but not even attempting to understand what is being spoken of. The advantages of being a good listener are vast. This skill can positively affect many parts of our everyday life and interaction with people. The reason I believe that listening is of such importance is because nowadays people have developed the mentality of “every man for himself.” People are not concerned about their fellows anymore. It is an important virtue when it comes to communication.People should be taught from childhood the importance of learning how to listen. If we realized how much we would benefit from being good listeners, I believe that things would change.
