On the 1st of November 2013, I performed my first simulation on the module, Foundation Skills for Nursing. This simulation was on checking for vital signs in patients particularly, measuring the blood pressure (BP) which is the force of blood vessels against the walls of the vessels (Marieb and Hoehn, 2010). We also measured the temperature, pulse and respiratory (TPR) rates of a patient. This simulation’s objective was to engage us in practising some basic observation techniques taken on patients in and out of hospitals and to familiarise us on some of the tasks we will be performing when in practise. I will be applying the “What”, “So what”, and “Now what” model of reflection in nursing by Driscoll (2000). We were divided into couples and each of us had to measure both BP and TPR on a patient. We were given the choice to choose which of the two observations techniques our companion would perform. My partner, Alexandra and I, agreed based on our confidence levels that I would perform TPR and she would take the BP of the patient, whom in this case was a course colleague. Alexandra was the first to perform her observation. After taking the BP of the patient with the blood pressure cuff and sphygmomanometer, she uttered that she could her find the patient’s radial artery which according to Martini and Bartholomew (2007) is found in the wrist and is most often used for its ability to be pressed against the radius’ distal section. As a result she could not measure the patient’s BP. She thereby proposed that I retake the observation. I found the patient’s pulse, completed the BP measurement whiles Alexandra recorded down our observations on an observation chart. The SSSC codes of conduct contains 10 codes 5 are for employees and other 5 are for employers where as in the NMC there is 4 codes which are, prioritise people, practise effectively, preserve safety and promote professionalism. Both codes are very similar even when dealing with different patient groups both codes state in 1.1 to prioritise people and treat each person as an equal individual. These both codes of conduct should be followed correctly at all times by anyone working in the health and social care. The NMCs aim is there to protect the public and decides if a nurse or midwife is fit to practice up to their high standards. The NMC was published on the 29th January 2015 but didn’t come effective to 31st March 2015.

NMC (2015) professional standard code of practice, emphased it is the duty for both registered and future nurses to set the standard that patient and the public expect from healthcare professionals.
1. Legal, ethical and professional principle frameworks underpin all fields of nursing, and it is a requirement for all Registered Nurses to be competent and knowledgeable, act with integrity and maintain professional standards set out by Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2015). Working with multidisciplinary teams within our profession, it is important to acknowledge and recognise the way in which all the professionals are guided by law and their independent regulatory bodies. The needs of the individual patient is to be considered by doctors and nurses alike, who share professional values and are set out in the respective codes of practice, The Code (NMC, 2015) and GMC (2013).
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.

This essay is going to reflect upon the nursing skills I developed during a period of placement simulations, placing emphasis on oral care, communication with a non-engaging patient and bed bath. It will outline the fundamental aspects of clinical nursing skills that I have begun to acquire. This will also highlight the learning processes which took place and how it helped me to enhance my knowledge, and ethical values in order to deliver quality and safety of care. Using a variety of sources from current literature, I will use a reflective model to discuss how I have achieved the necessary level of learning outcome. By utilising this model I hope to demonstrate my knowledge and understanding in relation to these skills as well as identifying areas with scope for learning.
