Throughout my entire time here at Shawnee State, becoming a more experienced writer has been a somewhat difficult task to get through and complete. This semester has been difficult for me. There has been many challenges introduced to me, but somehow where overcame so far. This is my journey through English 0096, from my first semester at Shawnee State University. English has always been a struggle to me, but mainly in high school. Through my experience so far into my first semester at Shawnee State, there has been noticeable improvements in my writing skills. During high school, English was my failing class. My essays weren’t that great, scoring lower than average in my class. During those years, I never applied myself enough to get where There has been more time I have put into these essays than ever before. It started from doing essays last minute, to putting them the priority over all my other classes. Writing my essays becomes more difficult when there is more to think about. Personally, focusing more on the grading rubric has made me a better writer. Following the instructions that was handed out basically at the beginning of the entire semester. That very rubric is very helpful in the journey on becoming a better writer as a whole. The grading rubric has helped me become a better writer itself, along with the help of Professor Jenkins submitting feedback on the essays I write. Coming closer to the end of the journey of English 0096, there has been a lot of stress that has been piled upon myself. Keeping up with the assignments are challenging, as it intertwines with all the other class assignments. Focusing on my essay are far more difficult than at the beginning of the semester. Reading all my previous essays are the only thing that helps me continue on throughout writing all my papers. From this the beginning, to this point, my decision was that this was the only way for myself to improve in
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Without delay, I begin my in-depth look into the requirements of this study and what was expected of me, as an English 111 student. To successively complete these assignments, I would need to be focused on the process of such writing assignments. Along with the instructor’s ideas that our writing would be done in such different ways it will eventually consume every waking moment of my time and become top priority for the next four months.
In this semester, I had to take the English 1301 course. However, I did not see myself liking this course and did not have the best attitude towards it. This course changed my overall experience with writing. In the course I gained so much knowledge that I did not see myself learning. This essay will help analyze my experience throughout the entire journey. It will help understand how I became the writer I am today. Over the last several weeks, I have grown into a great writer that I did not see myself as.
For my Final Reflection Essay I attempted to focus on the most obvious adjustments I made from writing high school papers to producing college level essays. This approach compelled me to examine a few of the papers I submitted in high school and look back on the steps I took to write them. By reviewing my previous work I realized that during Dr. Kennedys English 111 class I have effectively learned how to apply an outline, utilize research, and incorporate that research into my final paper. English 111 has helped me to understand the importance of the multiple steps of writing a great college level essay by forcing me to complete each step individually. My overall performance in this class has been above average and I have really demonstrated dedication to improvement.
Dual Enrollment English was the first real college-level class I ever had. I actually have taken other college-level classes before it, but Dual Enrollment English was the only course that gave me an accurate representation of how college will really be like and what it will expect of me. My journey through Dual Enrollment English began with a sense of fear and self-defeat and ended with a sense of satisfaction and confidence with many highs and lows along the way. This portfolio catalogs the evolution of my writing during my two semesters in Dual Enrollment English including seven different types of papers as well as each of their respective drafts and tutor feedback.
As the semester finally approaches the finish line, I revisit my past work to compare and contrast how this class has developed me into a successful writer at the college level. Throughout the year my writing style has developed and become broader as I have learned how to incorporate more of my personal views as well as reliable, unbiased information. This portfolio is a representation of how many things I have learned along the way while being an English 102 student.
Weak skills that I began the class with have become strong and my strong skills have become stronger. Having the opportunity to write a variety of different essay styles has challenged me greatly to improve my writing techniques. Each essay I was required to write brought its own struggles for me. I had to draw on the information that was presented through the class as well as look to the textbook for guidance. To ensure I did well on each essay I thought about my topic, researched the topic, then began to outline what I wanted to write about. Finally, I would write the essay and submit a rough draft. English 102 has given me the skills and training I need to move on to other classes next semester that will require writing essays. I now have a confidence in my writing abilities that this class has given
The most important part of the grading process for the AP English exam that I learned about through this assignment is that the readers are not looking for perfection. Rather, they are grading the essays as drafts and looking for your understanding of the prompt. I also learned that even numbers are benchmarks, and odd numbers are a step up for the higher scores and a step down for the lower scores. I think this has helped me to understand how others will be grading my essays and what I can do to achieve a higher score.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. Improving your writing skills is important, in every English class that’s the main teaching point; to help students improve their writing skills. Throughout my college experience I have acknowledge that
I notice that I would just turn in my essays in the past without rereading my essay. It was something that Erica and Ms. Orton notice very quickly they would ask me if reread my essays. I honestly told them “No” it was something I never did. I started questioning myself “Why, I never reread my essays” until this very moment I still can’t figure out why I never looked back. I decided to start rereading my essay, and getting my friends to give me feedback on what they thought about, and immediately notice a change in my essay I got a better grade. Overall as time passed I have gotten better at writing
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
I decided I was going to take English 1113 my junior year. I was worried that I was going to struggle writing college level papers because writing has never been my strong suit. I soon realized that it would not be as difficult because my professor gave me feedback on my rough drafts, so I would know what to improve in my paper. I knew before I even started writing my first paper that I would struggle with many aspects of writing, but I realized very quickly that I would struggle with common usage the most. I started off English 1113 struggling with comma errors throughout my papers, but through the course I have become more efficient with my writing, as well as improving my comma usage.
Taking this English course has helped me improve my English in many ways. I have learned a lot of really important information that I didn’t know before coming into this class. I am sure that I am now more knowledgeable than I was when I first entered this course. Some of the things I learned throughout this course were how to become a better reader and writer. I also learned how to write with a specific purpose. In the past all the writing I did was based on prompts and essays about books I didn’t understand what I was writing, and now the writing I do has a specific purpose to it.
I would never have expected that I would enjoy writing as much as I do now. In my former perspective, English was just composing mundane papers and a waste of time. However, the moment I entered English Composition 1 on August 29th, my entire perspective on English started to change. Several assignments in the course and reading through the textbook Patterns for College Writing by Laurie G. Kirszner and Stephen R. Mandell assisted me when it came to writing essays and understanding the different techniques and aspects of writing. I found myself learning more and enjoying English in this college course compared to my previous high school English classes, where I struggled and did not have the resources to improve. During the online course of English Composition 1, I have learned various aspects of writing and communication that have guided me to appreciate and succeed in English.
Before the start of the semester, the thought of college English overwhelmed my intellect. Apprehensively, I was concerned about the level of difficulty the writing would include. Although the course proved itself to be quite demanding, I was determined to get through it with a positive outlook. Over the course of the semester, I was challenged in assignments, classroom elements, participation and discussions. Challenges were frequently brought upon
