Development of My Writing Skills I decided I was going to take English 1113 my junior year. I was worried that I was going to struggle writing college level papers because writing has never been my strong suit. I soon realized that it would not be as difficult because my professor gave me feedback on my rough drafts, so I would know what to improve in my paper. I knew before I even started writing my first paper that I would struggle with many aspects of writing, but I realized very quickly that I would struggle with common usage the most. I started off English 1113 struggling with comma errors throughout my papers, but through the course I have become more efficient with my writing, as well as improving my comma usage.
I did not know how bad I was at editing my papers until I received feedback on my first paper, “The Effects of GMOs on Health.” I realized that I was not very efficient with my coma usage, because I had comma splices and run-on sentences throughout my paper. “Elementary” and “sloppy” were the terms used to describe my poor comma errors. I stated in my introduction essay that I had come custom to just plugging in a comma every time I thought there was a pause in the sentence. When I was editing the paper, I used all the knowledge I had gained during this semester to edit most of the errors. I received my feedback on “The Traumatic Truth,” and I think I made more comma errors on this paper than I have made on any of my other papers. I am going to be honest and say that I was probably in a rush and ready to get this paper out of the way, since it was my last paper. I think if I had not been in such a hurry to finish this paper I would have not had many errors in this paper at all, so therefore I learned that even if it is the last paper, I should not be in such a rush to finish
I never really considered myself an "acceptable" writer. I always would panic after realizing I have to write a paper because I never feel prepared or ready. After my semester of English 1102, I realized that I can spot good points for my argument, but I had difficulty analyzing them in terms of my thesis. My thesis and topic sentences were not my strong suits because I either don't dig deep enough, or I panic and add so much to my thesis/topic sentence that the syntax and diction is awkward and confusing. I would spend hours trying to fix these errors because of writer's block and anxiety; however, as the semester kept going, I found it to be easier to fix the errors in my paragraph by asking myself how to improve my paper and asking my peers

Before this quarter started I was fairly confident that I had what it took to ace English 101. After the first paper, I realized I was mistaken. Throughout this quarter I have had numerous problems with my writing that proved I needed to do a little more studying to help take my writing to the college level. Although I did not fail any of my papers, there was plenty of room for improvement. All the areas I needed to improve on are all areas that I think every English 101 student should know. I believe that every student at the college level should know how to cite sources correctly, know how to use good transitions, and know how to properly elaborate their examples.
Over the course of five weeks we’ve had to write three essays (four if you include this one). With every essay I’ve written I have improved my writing process. Having the chance to practice my writing skills in English 102 has made me a better all-around writer. From the beginning of this course, I knew I had a few major issues that I needed to overcome to improve my writing. The biggest being my issues with punctuation, specifically comma splices. Comma splices are something that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around. Although I have gotten better at recognizing comma splices they still seem to sneak in to my writing.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.

Punctuation errors in writing have hunted me ever since I can remember. They are my worst enemies when it comes to writing sentences in an essay. From my view punctuation errors are not only easy to make, but they are very hard to find in my essay’s after my sentences have been wrote. I can perform the punctuation errors and not even know I even made it. It drives me crazy, because I be having so many punctuation errors in my sentences when my English professor grades my essay’s.
The most glaring thing that I feel that I am doing wrong is that when I read a paper that is loaded with commas, I tend to point them out without much help from the tutee. Take the following paragraph, for example (which is a rough copy from a tutee of mine - who wasn't a foreigner to our country):

It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. When we talk about English 1110, everyone actually knows the main part of the course is writing. The goal of this class is to improve structural, style of writing, thoughts and performances of students. During this semester, the curriculum includes essays and topics from many different aspects of different issues which are useful to me. From this class, I had the opportunity to improve my writing skills. For example, before writing a paper, I always have outline, strategies, arranging and modifying as well as finding ideas to improve my writing style in a better way. Before taking English 1101, I just wrote essay with what I think of that time and did not care whether my essay is understandable or not; however, i have been improved for the past three months. When I see a title, I start to write down all ideas and also create an outline and order of all documents in a reasonable manner. In addition, all response papers that I have done during this semester I started to have different way of thinking by listening my friend's arguments, feedbacks or comments, agreements or disagreements. Those group activities from friends were helpful because I started to recognize what are right and wrong things in my essay. From there, I have my own personal opinions and defend my arguments.
Some of the complications I face with writing is not using enough body paragraphs, forgetting a thesis statement, lack of word choice, punctuation errors, etc. I am unaware at times of my mistakes, but I always try to correct them. Writing for me has always been a love and hate relationship since I could remember. Depending on the subject matter that I was writing about I would enjoy it because it suited my style or I loathed it because that specific style was uninteresting and boring to me. Learning certain writing formats were absolutely the worst part about writing when I first started learning in high school. As time pushed on and I grew older I began to develop an appreciation for writing that I did not have before; which is what led me to taking Writing 101 as my first full-fledged college course. I began this course with minimal writing experience because of what I failed to retain before, but now I am a stronger writer than I could have imagined with new skill sets that enhance my professional portfolio.
A piece of writing is often just like a fingerprint of the author who wrote it. The are distinguishable traits that appear in a majority of pieces the author of the paper composes, and is unboundedly recognizable to any reader. In Composition for College this semester, I have definitely left many clear figure prints on a majority of the paper I have written. However there are some features of my writing this year that are undesirable to me, and any reader who may skim over my papers. In order to change these negative aspects of my writing, I must set a series of goals for myself too make my writing better than it was before, including trouble with using commas, and a series of punctuation errors.
They are a nightmare in my essays that are dragging my grade down slowly. Comma splices appeared so much in my first essay in the beginning of the semester it was extremely disappointing for my professor and I. As I look through the past essays; I notice that this mistake has a pattern. Comma splices reappear in one essay and in the other there is fewer comma splices, they don’t completely go away, but it is my goal by the end of the semester to get rid of them. Therefore, if put more of my focus in to grammatical errors than the content of my essays, they will improve by the end of the semester. In the end, the problem of my comma splices might come from the fact that I am bilingual.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Now I understand the writing process and
