The most important part of the grading process for the AP English exam that I learned about through this assignment is that the readers are not looking for perfection. Rather, they are grading the essays as drafts and looking for your understanding of the prompt. I also learned that even numbers are benchmarks, and odd numbers are a step up for the higher scores and a step down for the lower scores. I think this has helped me to understand how others will be grading my essays and what I can do to achieve a higher score.
The English Honor Society appeals to me in many ways due to the presented opportunity of meeting new people, helping others while advancing my skills in the English language, and reviewing the subject of English Language Arts altogether. I am very intrigued by many of the mentioned ‘activities’ during the introduction meeting. I enjoy watching plays and musicals that relate to both historical and modern literature; they help to give different interpretations of the main themes and ideas found throughout it and also aid the audience to understand and comprehend ambiguous details. English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
When I was first accepted into the AP Language & Composition course, I felt overwhelmed. I had always received above average grades in all subject areas, but because this was an AP course I was unsure if my English skills were up to par. During the summer, my anxiety about the course increased. I began to feel that my writing skills were inferior to the skills of my peers’. Before this course, I did not have a developed writing voice or style. I had little knowledge of what phrases or words to avoid using in writing. I started to wonder if I truly belonged in an AP course. After having completed this course, I have a better grasp of the English language and have acquired skills that have improved my writing.
In my English class, I wanted to do well and ultimately became competitive to be the top student. I would read several passages, plays, and books through the year and at all times write as much as I could for the essays. My overall goal was to prepare for the ACT during junior year and earn “Advanced” score on my EOC/Benchmark scores. Hence, any writing techniques I could learn from my teachers, I would. I learned a majority of my writing skills and techniques in my sophomore and junior honors English classes. During my sophomore year, it was the first time I was in an honors course and it challenged me with writing even more. The summer assignment for the class was reading the book “A Separate Piece” by John Knowles and to complete and A, B, C of literacy techniques and elements, which was simple enough. While beginning the assignment, there was what appeared like a heap of unknown and new words, which left to question if the class was for me. By the end of that one assignment, I learned several new literacy elements and techniques that I would go on to enhance my writing as well as add new vocabulary to my everyday conversations and papers. My sophomore year also required a good amount of writing for state standardized tests. Amendment 1 is an amendment that was added to the Florida constitution last year(2014). Over 75% of Floridians voted for this act that is supposed to delegate money to help protect as well as buy land for Florida .The money delegated specifically for Amendment 1 should be used only to preserve the land, such as buying things to help protect the land. The money should be used specifically for trucks and any supplies needed as well as the land and not anything else; if it's not being used for what it's set aside for, don't set it aside at all.
Peter was my student of focus during observations. He is in a first grade class at the St. Eugene School in Yonkers, New York. Although I do not know the implications of Peter’s IEP due to confidentiality, the cooperating teacher did inform that Peter does have an IEP. After observing Peter’s classroom for almost three full days, I attempted to build an understanding of his performance and engagement in specific areas of reading and language arts. I observed Peter’s writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills.
In any AP class, writing is at the very core. Expressing ideas in a clear and concise way is vital in the real world. AP Language, for example, requires students to read a passage and write in a limited amount of time. Usually, students are required to form an analysis based on the rhetorical appeals written by the author. A 9 on a timed writing is a coveted honor that is earned through beautiful writing.
From experiences, I know grade 7s are competitive and active when it comes to games they like. Therefore the activity mustn’t be too boring, static or with no competition. The activity I’ve came up with is called Pass the ball which is related to Hot potato but with a literary twist. So to begin the goal of this game is not to be the one holding the ball at the end and avoid elimination. So basically all that is needed is a ball and to set up the participants sit in a circle, with enough space between each other to pass the ball comfortably and the prefect would be the host or moderator to observe the game and identify ‘It’ and ask the questions.
During the entirety of my high school career, I have pushed myself to take on more challenging courses such as AP U.S. History, AP Chemistry, AP Literature, as well as AP Calculus. These classes have helped me to form study habits which will be applied in college when the workload and expectations grow even more. In addition, I have also formed a small study group with two other girls who are taking all of the same rigorous classes as me and we get together on a regular basis to study for tests or complete difficult homework assignments. As a group, we are constantly challenging one another to think deeper and problem solve, which has helped me in other areas of school and life in general. I understand that each student is different and that one test will not be able to assess full understanding. It is important to guide support and to monitor learning progress to help students develop as learners. This standard is significant to a teacher because it is assessing students’ comprehension and overall progress. It aids the teacher in scaffolding the student and creating appropriate activities to support the students’ learning process. Furthermore, the teacher can benefit and improve his or her teaching practices to better evaluate students effectively. Technology is an essential addition to my instruction and is constantly present in my students’ everyday lives. It only makes sense that educators are using technology for assessments and standardized tests. Adams stated that because essay-grading technology has improved throughout the years, some standardized tests have used it to analyze the essay portions (pg. 3). I feel that not only could this save time reading and analyzing the essays, but it could possibly even prevent bias or human scoring errors. Some essay-grading technology can be used to provide feedback to students before they submit an assignment. This technology seems beneficial because it could help ensure that a student is submitting a high-quality essay, which would allow the teacher to provide meaningful feedback on craft and arguments instead of focusing on grammar and mechanics
For our assignment, I chose to be blind. This was a tough assignment, however a very humbling one. First, while I thought this chose was the easiest of the three, after just ten minutes I felt lost and helpless. My thoughts went to how I was going to complete anything for myself. So I tried to get up and move to the kitchen to get a drink of water and needless to say I ran into many objects that I thought I knew where they were located, however my senses were off by just the simple thing of being blindfolded.
As a reader I couldn't identify exactly when my so-called "monotone" reading turned into the more fluent and acceptable type of reading in the English language; however, I do recall a time when I was fully aware of my reading capabilities. I remembered it mostly because it was the most positive confidence booster I'd received while learning to read.
While in high school, I took many Advanced Placement classes and passed the accompanying exams. Because of this, I was able to begin college with many of my general education credits already completed. This has allowed me to fulfill all but one of the general education classes required by UC Santa Cruz. I will complete my final remaining general education course in Winter quarter 2017. Having finished these requirements will allow me to focus exclusively on classes for my major and possible minor without the distraction of lower division classes.
