Riding out the Storm
As much as anyone prepares for a hurricane to come, there is no stopping it once it is here. Riding out the storm sitting in the dark, getting minimal sleep, and surviving off the stock kept in the basement is all one can do. Then as the eye of the storm moves over the area, everything becomes eerily calm and everyone waits for destruction to hit once again. The storm continues to move and it is back to waiting it out and merely surviving. The storm many know as a hurricane can relate quite well to my experience in College English, but as I near the end of the semester I can reflect back and see the many areas of writing I have improved on. As I moved through the storm of College English I improved on many of my writing
I then began to see that I could, so to say, calm the storm by using transitions between paragraphs and sentences. For example, on essay four instead of just going straight into the first paragraph I transitioned into it by tying it to the thesis statement. On the other hand, when transitioning into other sentences I chose to add in a few transitions here and there; the transitions starting out the sentences made the whole paper improve. I can now see that where there was a transition it tied the sentences together and related the two even if there wasn’t much of a
In a College English class I hoped to sound like I was actually a part of the class instead of faking it and failing that part of it. For example, in all of my papers I stuck to the word better, and I’m not sure why. On every single paper I went through to revise the whole thing and had to change the word better to a different word. Needless to say, the thesaurus became one of my best friends and most popular searches through the semester. When I reflect on the semester, I can see that my word choice improved significantly without me noticing. Of course, I had to go back and use the thesaurus on a few words, but when writing I used words that I never could have imagined using. As I look back on the semester I can see that my writing matured for a college level
