“He needs support!” my coach yelled as Gage charged forward with the rugby ball. He collided with a player from the other team and was taken to the ground. Before the opposition could steal the ball from Gage, Seth and I were there. We protected Gage and the ball from any players who tried to steal it. The ball was then gathered up by our team and passed on to another runner. That is your job when you are a forward in rugby. You support the runners and retain possession of the ball at all costs. It takes a great deal of dedication to be able to run non-stop and tackle people for the full 90 minutes of a rugby match. After my first semester of college my family took a long road trip. I had not performed well academically that semester and I had to ride the whole way with just my dad. After an hour of riding in silence my dad told me he was disappointed with me because he knew that I was capable of more. During that car ride he challenged me to take pride in and excel at what I do. From then on I told myself that I would find a way to work harder each semester. I started with a low GPA and increased it every semester until I finished with a much more respectable one. I idealistically considered what I could do that would have the greatest impact on medicine. I decided that getting a Ph.D in microbiology and developing treatments and medicine seemed like the best option to fulfill that goal. I started to do microbiology research and realized that it was going to be a frustrating, but also revealing and valuable experience in my life. I was frustrated because I spent a large amount of time on a project, but when the dust settled I was left with more questions than answers. I was disheartened, and while I realize that research is important to the medical community, I felt that I needed a more human aspect to the work I was doing. I decided to set up a job shadow of a DO from my hometown, Dr. Wilson. She treated her patients like human beings rather than cases and went the extra mile to make them as comfortable as possible. I knew that that patient contact was the human aspect I was seeking in my search for the right medical field. I decided then that I wanted to be a DO and emulate that same regard for the patient as a person rather than a case that I had observed from Dr.
As a student that is currently seeking a career in the medical professions, I have had to routinely contemplate my reasons for pursuing such an extensive education program in a field that is constantly demanding excessive time and effort. I know of students—many friends and acquaintances of mine included—that have the most sure-fire, inspirational stories that align with their desire to become doctors, surgeons, physician assistants, etc. They always seemed to have a story that emphasized their desire to “give back” what they have received from the medical community. I started high school with a broken heart. My father died when I was 13, not long before I started high school. I worked hard in school not only for him, but because working hard is who I am. He taught me that if you want something you have to go out and get it yourself and what I wanted to do was go to college. I have put myself through a lot in just this past year alone, applying for scholarships nonstop and earning my license so I can finally get a job. I want to be a successful, responsible person so I can make my father, wherever he is, proud of how far I was able to come after he was gone. Since a young age, I always felt inclined towards pursuing a career in the health care field; daydreaming about myself working at a clinic or hospital and making a positive impact on someone’s life. Regretfully, when I entered high school I did not realize how hard I had to work to get what I wanted. I went to my classes, did my work, but never really pushed myself to my full abilities. I thought that as long as I graduated with decent grades I would be able to get into college and really focus then. But as high school quickly came to an end I realized that I was not as well prepared for college, as I would have liked.
I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. My entire life I have always been viewed as the black sheep of my family, and out of 14 grandkids, I was always the one that nobody ever thought would amount to anything. My father was a high school dropout, and everyone assumed that I would be an alcoholic drop out, just like him. I never had a wonderful childhood where everything was laid before me to choose from; instead, I have had to fight and scrap for every little bit of approval from everyone in my family, and my peers. All of my Aunts were school teachers, and my Uncle was a chemical engineer, and they were able to send their kids to college as soon as they graduated from high school. It has taken me almost a decade to be able to send myself. I was never able to achieve good grades when I was young. I tried and tried to make good grades, but trying on your own with no help can be like the blind leading the blind. Sport Culture rugby, in particular plays a major role in the creation of New Zealand’s national identity over the past 140 years. New Zealand is identifiable with its strong ties to Rugby on an international scale. Introduced as contact sport by European men it grew, Rugby Union Clubs began to emerge in cities and towns all over the nation. Sport culture allowed pakeha and Maori to unite, as previously the solidarity of New Zealand culture dwindled beneath the Maori Land Wars of the 19th century. Rugby football acts as an example of Pakeha and Maoris common ground in the Rugby field. The unification of society in a regular space and time Sport has solidified nations. But in recent years it has become an entity of Hegemonic masculinity, a home for alcoholism, violence and Beer drinking.
I never once in my life sat down with myself and really thought about what my parents had to go through and all the sacrifices they had to make in order to ensure that I have a better life and a brighter future. Thinking back now, the frustration I feel eats away at me constantly that I was not more thankful and did not do more to help. This is most definitely a lesson that is learned better late than never. Going forward now I have three main focuses for when I enter college, the first is undoubtedly God and my spiritual life, which forced me to have this revelation. The second focus has to be my family, which I appreciate and value more than ever now. The final focus I have, but certainly not the least, is to be successful in my endeavors throughout college. I started college ten years ago with the hopes of graduating back in 2010. That dream was derailed multiple times due to my life being “more about the past than their future,” (Palahniuk, 1999, p. 117) but in the fall of 2015, I started for a third time and proved to myself that I do have the determination to continue this dream. As for my parents, they’ve helped support me each time I tried my hand at school. They are the first people I’ve called after receiving a grade on a tough exam or assignment I’ve worked hours on, they’ve let me read them papers or presentations for opinions on flow and content, and they encourage me to try my hardest, to never give up. I would love to repay their hours of support by finishing my bachelors for them
With each passing civilization and the era it’s [its] people lived in, one can find a great deal about the times by examining an area that is not often thought of. That area is in regards to sports. The ancient Mayans had arenas, the Greeks helped initiate the Olympics, and the Romans had bloody matches between gladiators in the Colosseum. These sports and games often reveal to us what was occurring outside the playing field and arenas, into the political arenas and clashes between the classes. Examining the history of rugby throughout Europe, particularly in Great Britain, allows one the opportunity to see how the changes throughout society’s values, norms, and principles are mirrored by the evolution of the game of rugby from the mid-nineteenth century up to World War I.
Throughout my life, I have worked towards one goal which is to become a doctor. Medicine offers the opportunity for me to integrate different scopes of science while trying to improve human life. Medicine has intrigued me throughout all my life because it??s a never ending mystery and every answer has questions, and vice versa. Upon entering my career, I had assumed that professional and financial success would surely bring personal fulfillment. This realization triggered a process of self-searching that led me to medicine. The commitment to provide others with healthcare is a serious decision for anyone. As I examined my interests and goals, however, I underwent a process of personal growth that has propelled me towards a career as a physician. A career in medicine will allow me to integrate thoroughly my passion for science into a public-service framework. Since childhood, I have loved acquiring scientific knowledge, particularly involving biological processes. During my undergraduate studies, I displayed my ability to juggle competing demands while still maintaining my academic focus; I have succeeded at school while volunteering part time, spending time with family and friends, and working part-time. To better serve my expected patient population, I worked over my English and Korean language skills. I have come to discover that a job and even a good income, without another significant purpose, will not bring satisfaction. I planed to utilize my assets, namely my problem- solving affinity, strong work ethic, and interpersonal commitment, to craft a stimulating, personally rewarding career in medicine. I have taken stock of myself, considering my skills, experiences, and goals. I have looked to family and friends, some of whom are doctors, for advice. Because of this self-examination, I have decided to pursue a career in health care. The process has been difficult at times but always illuminating. Throughout it all, I have never lost confidence - the confidence that I will actively absorb all available medical knowledge, forge friendships with fellow students, and emerge from my training as a skilful and caring physician.
