Part Two-Reflection Paper
I received my MS in Psychology at Texas A&M International University; therefore, I received no writing classes or support. The only formal writing I did was for my British Literature class. I had to learn to write APA on my own, and I read academic papers, receiving my training from them. Texas A&M International University had a writing center, yet no one understood APA, so I used PaperRater, instead. One of the area that I have identified that will help me succeed is this class since I receive feedback on my writing. The Northcentral webinars are particularly instructive, and they cover several characteristics of writing. The webinar proposed underlining in colors. I do that on laptop to section area and papers off.

I have a system on my google drive, where I have stored all my classes in folders within folders. For example, there are times when I need to go back to psychopathology class and reference. This is less clutter for me, and I have everything I need to go to consult. My DSM-V is critical to my life, and I have it sectioned in colorful tabs into all the different disorders. Additionally, I have the case studies for the APA. I have joined the SSBS Psych Community club, the Psychology club, APA Style Guidelines club and the LGBTQ club since these are the concentrations that interest me. I will certainly be using this clubs to assist me in my dissertation paper, specifically the SPBS statistics
When I was first accepted into the AP Language & Composition course, I felt overwhelmed. I had always received above average grades in all subject areas, but because this was an AP course I was unsure if my English skills were up to par. During the summer, my anxiety about the course increased. I began to feel that my writing skills were inferior to the skills of my peers’. Before this course, I did not have a developed writing voice or style. I had little knowledge of what phrases or words to avoid using in writing. I started to wonder if I truly belonged in an AP course. After having completed this course, I have a better grasp of the English language and have acquired skills that have improved my writing.
I found that learning by example helped my writing greatly. One of the books we read, “The Sixth Extinction” by Elizabeth Kolbert, influenced my writing. The book is well written in an academic style that engages the reader. Her writing also flows nicely throughout every passage. I tried to
Over my career of schooling my writing has changed dramatically at times and very little at others. Through my years of schooling people have determined my main weaknesses and strengths that I should work on with my writing. My biggest weakness is writing introductions and conclusions they must be so complicated and require so much thought to be defined as good. I excel at writing body paragraphs and explaining all the facts that back up your main ideas though.
The journey through language and literature has always been an intriguing one for me. It is for this reason that I chose English as my major. It seems that every teacher or professor that I have had, has always been able to pinpoint one specific element in my writing that I need to work on. This has not been a negative thing by any stretch, because with each passing semester there is an element of my literature that will be perfected for the next. This is the wonder that is English, and the reason for my passion in this subject area.
Writing is a process I’ve grown to despise. Ever since grade school, I’ve had problems trying to express my ideas on paper. My writing process involves thinking about what’s being asked and trying to reflect my thoughts the best way I can on paper, but my thoughts don’t always come out as clear as I want them to be sometimes leaving a question not fully answered. My writing process isn’t a consistent set in stone process, but since being in ENC 1101 I always follow some of the same parameters such as revising my drafts, grammar usage and considering context and audience.
Anyone who is doing any type of writing piece has a process. They may not know it but it is there and it exists. It is one’s approach to their piece and how they go about accomplishing it. It has to do with how you write it, how many drafts you do, as well as your revision process if you even have one. My writing process however has room for improvement. A summation of my writing process consist of heavy planning, one draft, and little revisions. Anne Lamott, Shirley Rose, and Kathleen Yancey all drew attention to major points through their writing pieces that support and dispute my writing process. At the beginning of the semester in Eng 121, I knew that there would be much to learn and many areas to improve. In high school I was not a strong writer, so taking Eng 121, in my first semester of college, was intimidating. Yet I quickly adjusted and was able to grow as a writer. My greatest accomplishment was understanding myself as a writer, because of this I quickly learned my weaknesses and strengths. After I learned my weaknesses I was able to prevent or go back and fix my mistakes, this allowed me to improve my writing immensely. Luckily, over the past few months I was able to learn the new 8th edition of MLA and identify my weaknesses, such as writing clear and concise sentences. The papers I chose to submit are ones of which I was able to prevent or correct mistakes I knew that I struggled with as a writer because of my Eng 121 class.
Looking back on my first semester as an Ole Miss student, I have been taught valuable information that has made me a more educated individual and a more advanced writer. While reflecting on my development in the class of Writing 101, I have discovered that the learning outcome of the writing process has been the most beneficial to me this semester. Although I wrote my literacy narrative essay early in the year, it has proven to be the paper most related to the learning process I have chosen. Throughout this course, the writing process has taught me the important and necessary steps of how to write a comprehensive and organized paper that leads to a prosperous grade.
Writing is an important part of everyone’s life, whether we use it in school, in the workplace, as a hobby or in personal communication. It is important to have this skill because it helps us as writers to express feelings and thoughts to other people in a reasonably permanent form. Formal writing forms like essays, research papers, and articles stimulates critically thinking. This helps the writer to learn how to interpret the world around him/her in a meaningful way. In college, professors motivate students to write in a formal, coherent manner, without losing their own voice in the process. During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. I have learned a wide variety of material in this class. My critical thinking, research writing, and digital writing skills have all improved, as a result of this class. Throughout this eight week course, I have not only enhanced my overall writing skills, but I have also learned how to identify, and use reliable sources to my advantage. I have done so, all while giving the proper credit where it is due. My portfolio will include much of the material I did in this class. From my essay collection, to a few of my discussion posts, each given assignment helped me expand on my writing and improve my overall skills. Before this course, I was never familiar with the American Psychological Association format of writing, also known as APA style. Writing has been my most challenging requirement through school. I am not a very experienced writer. I was not required to write much in high school until my last semester. My last semester in high school, about a year and half ago, I took GENR-091 which is the last time I have written a paper longer than one page. That was my most recent writing class; I am rusty to say the least.
Throughout this semester in English 102, I feel that my writing and analytical skills have improved. I have always had trouble in writing ever since I was young kid. In my essays I would have words misspelled or my sentences would not flow because I would leave words left out. This course has taught me to always revise my essay and read it out loud to check for mistakes. I have also really learned to analysis different things like advertisements, books, articles, and other things that were assigned throughout this course.
