According to our textbook Student Teaching, “disposition is a tendency to exhibit frequently, consciously, and voluntarily a pattern of behavior that is directed to a broad goal.” All of us have goals. Our behaviors help to determine whether or not we reach our goals. Therefore, it is important for teachers to reflect on their dispositions to determine if their behaviors are in line with their goals. I spent some time reflecting on the teacher dispositions listed in our textbook. I thought about my behaviors and goals as a teacher. Below is a synopsis of my reflection on some of my dispositions taken from the textbook and from NAEYC‘s dispositions to teach self assessment.
One of the dispositions I feel that I possess is empathy. I feel I show empathy frequently. I have always had the ability to see and accept another’s person’s point of view. I believe that everyone sees things from a different perspective and it is a persons life experiences that guide those perspectives. I believe this will help me in teaching because each child is a unique person with their own share of experiences. It is important to understand their perspective. It is also important to understand their experiences when planning activities that are meaningful to them. I think this disposition helps me to meet NAEYC standard 1”Relationships.” By having and showing empathy I am able to meet each child’s needs as an individual.
Another disposition that I feel I possess is authenticity. I feel I do not pretend to be something I am not. I am open with people. ...ion on different cultures and discrimination, I believe I better understand the impact of discrimination on students and their learning. I rated this a 4/5 also. As a society we are getting better at this but we must continue to monitor and prevent discrimination. The reason I chose 4/5 on some of these dispositions is because we must continually strive to be better. This will help to remind me to continue to reflect and improve in these areas.
In conclusion, these are just some of the dispositions I feel I have. I feel that my dispositions will help me to reach my goal of becoming the best teacher I can be to my students. By earning my degree I feel I have the knowledge, skills and professional dispositions needed to help the children I teach learn. Going to school to further my education has better prepared me to care for the children/families I teach.

Empathy is imperative to teach kids from a young age in order to help them recognize mental states, such as thoughts and emotions, in themselves and others. Vital lessons, such as walking in another’s shoes or looking at a situation in their perspective, apprehends the significance of the feelings of another. Our point of view must continuously be altered, recognizing the emotions and background of the individual. We must not focus all of our attention on our self-interest. The role of a principal is a vital function of the school. The manner in which a principal performs determines that success of the school. Being in the position as an assistant principal has allowed me to view this role totally different from I did when I was a teacher. I am grateful to intern, full time trusting that I will gain the most out of this experience. However, there are a number of lessons that I have learned within these first quarter of my internship that will vastly impact my leadership as a new leader.
Empathy is the ‘capacity’ to share and understand another person’s ‘state of mind’ or their emotion. It is an experience of the outlook on emotions of another person being within themselves (Ioannides & Konstantikaki, 2008). There are two different types of empathy: affective empathy and cognitive empathy. Affective empathy is the capacity in which a person can respond to another person’s emotional state using the right type of emotion. On the other hand, cognitive empathy is a person’s capacity to understand what someone else is feeling. (Rogers, Dziobek, Hassenstab, Wolf & Convit, 2006). I hope I will be successful in my future professional growth. My main goal is to see the real results of my work: the successful psychologists, who use the knowledge I gave them in practice. The other goal is to develop new ways of teaching, though observing my students. My attitude towards learning and teaching changes over time, because I’ve understood that studying can be easy when you study, what you want to study, and teaching can be pleasant, when you see that somebody appreciates your work. I will probably improve my teaching and learn new skills with the help of my students, because they are constantly in motion and I will do my best to notice the changes in their needs, in order to improve the learning process and make it easier for them.
It’s funny how quickly time flies by it seems like just yesterday I was complaining about writing the first part of this assignment. Looking back at it now, the reasons why I want to become a teacher remain the same. I want to inspire, shape, encourage, and mentor my students. I want to make the kind of impact on each and every single one of them that they will carry on for the rest of their lives. Whether it be simply believing in them, and telling them that I know they are capable of accomplishing anything they want to, or helping them through a tough time. My desire to become a teacher has increased tremendously the past 16 weeks, and I am so eager and excited to finish my education to begin my teaching career.
The intention of reflective practice is to help the teacher/learning coach evolve and develop the quality of their teaching by the continuation of personal development. Although most teachers have done this for years, reflective modelling or methods have formulized a structure which can be followed and adapted to best suit their methods. It is an ongoing process which takes feelings and emotions into consideration and so it will not always have a definitive answer/ending. Since most models of reflection require subjective and objective thinking then there is a willingness to be honest to engage constant self appraisal. It asks that the teacher become flexible analytical and socially aware when addressing their chosen model of reflection.
When children are surrounded by compassion for each other and their troubles, they learn to also present the same feelings for others. It is important especially in schools because this is where children go to learn, and if they see that people are demonstrating empathy towards each other than they might try to replicate those same emotions in themselves. An example of this is in the U.K. where schools had implemented a more lenient dress code to help address the feeling that students had. Some students did not feel comfortable in the mandatory school uniform. The new dress code at this school allows girls to wear pants, and the boy students to wear skirts if they wanted to. This is a display of empathy because the school understood the feelings of their students, that they did not feel like themselves in the school uniforms, and made adjustments to make them feel more comfortable in their clothes. Lastly, empathy is shaping society because empathy allows people to imagine what life would be like from another person’s perspective. This would make them less likely to do anything relating to their concerns or worries, or make them want to help that individual more. I chose to do my teacher interview in my home town at Richard D. Crosby Elementary School. This K-3rd grade building is very new, it was built in 2010. It has 4 pods, one for each grade level and has a large discovery center in each pod. The school is very colorful, with each pod a different color so the children find it easy to go from area to area. I did my interview with Mrs. Doe, a special education teacher. Her room has a lot of materials for learning and is set up to have several work stations for group activities. Mrs. Doe shares her students with other special education teachers and also has a special education classroom aide. My research question is how does a teacher’s perspective on learning reflect theories and concepts in educational psychology? Mrs. Doe is faced with many challenges in her classroom, overcrowding, multi-cultural differences, learning disabilities, several students with low socioeconomic status and English language learners. There are many challenges for Mrs. Doe to deal with, but she has been teaching for 21 years and has a lot of experience. She started out as a regular classroom teacher, but switched to special education and has done so well that when she asked if she could return to the regular classroom setting, the Superintendent begged her to stay in the special education department because of her success.
Coming into this class, I figured we would learn about how to handle different kinds of situations from a teacher’s standpoint. As it turns out, the class is much more than just that. I figured there would be group discussions consisting of some controversial issues, but I had no idea how the course would make me feel as a person and as a future educator. So far, this class has brought to light the incredibly difficult decisions I will have to make as a teacher. Not only will those decisions affect the child and parents of that child at hand, but myself as well.

My goal as a teacher is to improve my student’s education and help them grow knowledgably. I like to see students at different levels develop with each other and learn. I want to challenge the students and watch them grow to their highest level of education. Therefore, having the students in groups is the best educational strategy I like to use a lot. I want my students to have freedom with whatever creativity they want, and to allow them to express themselves at any time. With this freedom students will be able to experiment with likes and dislikes and be able to figure their weaknesses and strengths. Education is for everyone and it’s a right by low for all; teachers, on the other hand, should do their jobs very honestly and effectively.
We need to continuously assess and evaluate our students so we can set appropriate goals for each student and individual instructions. Each child learns different, so as a teacher we need to have different styles of teaching for positive reinforcement.
