1. My General Reflections and Impressions
Going into the observation at the high school level, I was intending for a very boring time, due to the fact that I plan on teaching at the elementary level. However, throughout my time observing this Life Skills class I actually fell in love with it. So much so, that if I taught at the high school level I would definitely want to teach this class. At this high school there are two Life Skills classes and they do almost everything together. Through observing these two classes I felt an amazing sense of community and family. The teachers and staff workers who worked with these students were amazing. It was very inspirational to observe and such an honor to meet these students and faculty.

Upon my arrival, I was greeted by a student who let me into the room. Once I was in the classroom, it felt a little awkward at first since everyone was looking at me. But, not even a minute in and I felt extremely comfortable. I introduced myself to the teacher, and she introduced me to her assistance as well as the teacher for the other life skills class. Now, the students were off to breakfast, so we all went to the cafeteria. The students pretty much sat all together, but you were still able to differentiate between the different social groups. Everyone kept asking why I was there, and some students kept coming up to me saying hi and asking what I was doing. Also eating breakfast with us was the non-verbal students. One of which got upset and began hitting the table repeatedly, then all of a sudden started flailing his arms causing his food to fly everywhere. The staff members, I believe handled the situation very well. They remained calm, and simply approached the student and encouraged him to talk a walk (with his faculty person). This was the student’s way of calming down. I later found out he ended up walking a mile and a quarter until he calmed down. Some of the food got on another student, and the teachers assured her that she was okay and
Being in a school that brought students from various counties and cities with different backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives, opened my eyes to seeing just how diverse humanity is. In a time when everyone is struggling with personal problems, I know how monumental a simple volunteer act can be. One of my favorite acts of service is tutoring. I tutored an elementary-aged girl for two years in Fort Lee and I will always remember those two years as the most fulfilling. Education is so precious, and children are the most open to it. Not only was I able to teach her math and reading comprehension skills, but how to carry herself as a smart and extraordinarily capable young lady. Each day at school encountering rudeness is common especially from students but also from the faculty. Walking through the busy hallways of the school is where encountering rudeness is the most likely to occur and probably will. While walking through the busy hallways on my way from the lunchroom keeping a good look out ahead for the blockade of kids that tend to stop right in the middle of the hall to socialize slowing down the flow of the student body is a good idea so I will have less of a hassle in getting around them. Maybe just one of these times the kids will get it through their heads and move to one side or the other to keep the flow of students steady. Yet this does not happen and this will continue on a regular basis during the school day.
This semester in Child Development has helped me a great deal. I came into this class wanting to be a Child Development teacher at the high school level. I am leaving this class with the same ambition to become a Child Development teacher. I have learned so much by taking this class and I know it will all be helpful in the future once I am standing at the front of a classroom. Also, just by watching the way Mary teaches the class, I have learned things that I want to take into my own style of teaching.
The purpose of this assignment is to provide a brief synopsis of life course theory, while explaining the key principles of the theory as it relates to my personal interpretation. When I first started to think about what I’m going to do for my service learning project, I wanted to learn more about deaf people and the education they are taught. I soon realized that this wasn’t broad enough and made it broader to just plain education. With this is mind it led me to Mars Hill Elementary school working with the children on math. The children were glad to have me there and loved the new perspective on the problems then what they already have. When I was working there I was focusing on how the teachers were constructing their class rooms and how the kids were responding. I came into this class not really knowing any more then people can get insurance and money for food from the human service department. My eyes were definitely opened those first couple weeks of class. I have realized that there is so much more that a human services worker can do. I also learned that most people who use the services are truly desperate and need help. I have learned a lot about seeing the big picture and not just what’s in front of me.
Human life is full of meaning. As humans, we assign value to many things. However, what happens when we assign a specific value to a human life? This is the issue being presented in the article, “What is a Life Worth,” by Amanda Ripley. The government is determining a monetary value to a human life, and it does not appeal to the masses. There are many problems with the cold calculation, and most people cannot see the other side of the numbers. The economic value of a human life is calculated based on the income the person was receiving, but when the check is given to a loved one of a small amount, the compensation is misinterpreted as an overall value of the human life. The true value of a human life should not be combined with the monetary value that is determined by the government, or the value of life would be worth very little.
Educations a key component to the development of mankind; however, there is a distinct difference in the education of adults versus the education of children. It is not practical to assume a learning style used for a kindergartener would be applicable for an adult business person. In fact, pedagogy, or the science of learning, can help explain the constructs required to teach and learn in life and the classroom. Understanding the class of learners and the distinct backgrounds they may have is critical to effective teaching (Kelly, 2006). A class of adults from one state or region may not learn the same as one from another; therefore, understanding the specific needs of an audience is imperative to effective learning.
Life Lesson As an underclassman you come into high school either thinking that the next four years of your schooling will be really easy or really stressful. To tell the truth, it can be both, whether you come into high school with a positive or negative attitude. High school is the last place you can get away with some mistakes and try again. The next four years will test your skills and responsibilities.
Our subjectivity is heavily influenced by the amount of education that we receive. The effort that people contribute to enhancing academic excellence today is what makes learning possible and effective. Through the proper use of our academic knowledge we can construct society together. Schooling is an evident pathway toward generating social change and it is important that education is properly enforced and easily accessed by all people. Because education enables a person to grasp an understanding of his or her society, we as educated people have a crucial responsibility for contributing to social advancement.
Humans are so different when learning that there are not enough names to describes all the ways of learning that exist, as each person has a different one. Learning is a process in which we get to know things about a subject that we do not have much knowledge about and we try to understand the concepts behind it. Each one of us has specific needs, factors or strategies that influence this process and helps it to be as productive as it can be. Personally I think that we all, by the time we get into college, know our specific needs, factors and strategies in which we tend to study and learn in a more productive way. I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart. I enjoyed the first learning activity of observation and can see this class getting into the mentality of education. I got this same thing from MGMT class and was surprised there too. I knew some about cognitive development prior to this class with the studies I have done, but I can still see the advantages of learning a new perspective.
