When I started the Human Services career I always believed that I was going to be able to help anyone that needs help and it did not matter what type of crimes they had committed. Little did I know that this career was going to challenge me as a person and was going to make me think about my own biases and make me think how can I over come my own biases to be an effective helper. Being a single mother of two children, I am overprotected with my children and even like that its sad too know that sometimes child molesters are someone you know. At one point, I believed that a child molester should not even be allowed to live in this country and they should be in jail for life. Learning and developing into the helper I will become in
the future have made me change as a person. I have been practicing how to be more understanding, patient, and the most important respecting other people who have committed different types of crimes that I might not agree with. Understanding peoples motives for their crimes is important to get an understanding why they act the way they do. For instance, in child molesters I have learned that sometimes they where the victims at one point. Doing the research on child molesters have made me realized that even if its a sensitive topic, I would like to challenge my self to see how I can help this population. The way I would be able to help this population is by maintaining my self neutral, being supervised, and being judgmental, and treating client with respect. Going into the human service career has really made me think about the person I am and the person I want to be when becoming a helper. Preparing for my career has definitely, gave me an out look of my biasses, attitude and I have become aware what population I would like to work with I would like to work with family and kids and get my Master in Social Work. Being aware of my biasses and learning about different type of population is very fascinating to me and has been teaching me how I can become a better helper for the future of tomorrow.

Over the course of time that myself and the other members of my group spent at Medshare’s National Headquarters and Southeast Region Distribution Center, I gained a valuable experience and broadened my horizons with regards to the international medical aid that the non-profit Medshare provides around the world. The staff and crew that serve at Medshare’s Southeast Region Distribution Center, all have different backgrounds and stories as to how they originally connected to the organization. Some members of the crew included individuals who went to university and received undergraduate degrees in the disciplines of Pre-Med, International Business, and Human Services, while other older members of staff included doctors
The field of human services is a complex and encompassing profession, which focuses on the well being of individuals and groups. While there are a number of components that fall into the duties and sphere of influence of a helper, there are generally three main “functions”: social care, social control, and rehabilitation (Woodside & McClam, 2015, p. 9). Social care refers to assisting individuals who are unable to care for themselves (Woodside & McClam, 2015, p. 9). Social control refers to providing assistance to individuals who can care for themselves, but have been unsuccessful in doing so or have done so in a way that defies generally accepted social norms or community laws (Woodside & McClam, 2015, p. 9). The theory used for this case study was effective, because it was able to get P to recognise that change need to occur so the support that she received would be effective. Reflecting on action the outcome of the assessment and intervention that was applied to P’s case I used supervision and to discuss concerns I had regarding this family with my PS. Supervision helped me establish my concerns and areas I required further support in application to theory in evidence based practice ‘blind self’.
Define the term “the whole person” and explain why this is important in human services and explain the components of “the whole person”
The one common passion that all social workers have is the ability to fight for other individual’s human rights and justice. What society often forgets is the fact that every human being in the world has human rights, but everywhere you go there are people mistreated and considered disposable. In a world that has a vast amount of cultures and customs, it is pertinent that social workers become aware of the diversity that exists. Social workers are expected to be culturally competent, empathetic, and sensitive to those that might be different from us. Social workers are the instruments to change the lives of people in mirco, meso, and macro settings. Social workers, especially those who are therapists or case managers, need to have a global perspective while working in the field. Social with global perspectives will help social workers empathize with their clients, teach them skills that can be applied in the field, and understand how one policy in one country can affect others.
I have felt drawn to support and strengthen the communities I am connected to for several years now. Although it took sometime to trace my passion for helping those in need, upon reflection I am able to clearly see a pattern of people, agencies and institutions that provided the additional support I needed to be successful. This support is the primary reason I have chosen the human services profession. From an early age I witnessed how social workers can help those struggling to find the resources they need to foster change.
This course has taught me a lot about the role human service workers have in communities and what communities need from human services. I learned about why this type of work is so important and was able to seen that importance first hand through my observation hours at the Dorothy Day Center.
Overall this semester, I believe my writing in this course has been one of my strongest areas and I am excited to keep getting better at this skill. With my mother’s help during middle and high school, my papers have improved significantly and now I think I have a firm grasp on writing for various disciplines, but particularly professional settings like social work. I picked up on APA format quickly after doing MLA for several years and it now feels like second nature to me. There are certainly still formatting areas to improve upon and learn more about, but at this stage, I think I am progressing steadily. Thirdly, I am able to find appropriate sources easily to reference in my activity analyses, which is crucial as I advance in the program.
Working with others and improving own learning and performance are highly essential skills in social work. In this essay I will reflect on how well I have developed these two skills and what I need to do to improve them.
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a variety of many things regarding social work. These things vary from learning how to help oneself to understanding how to help others. Not only were the textbooks very useful, but also the materials that furthered this textbook learning. The in class presentation, activities, and guest speakers gave us insight and a different perspective on the material we were learning. I feel like this course has given me a good foundation and prepared me as a future social worker (1).
