What Happened?
On January 29, 2016, I was introduced to a course called Business Discourse. I was anticipating about what this course would be about. At first, I was thinking it have to do with some Professional Conduct or Etiquette because it goes by the name Business Discourse. However, after our Lecturer started to introduce the course and the requirements I started to clear up my understanding of what the course entailed. It is a course where you learn about very important documents needed for the business world. In this course I expected to learn how to prepare business documents such as Cover letter and Resume, Incident Report, Application Letter, Press Release, Letter of Recommendation, Letter of Resignation, among others.

I now come to a better understanding of how to write an excellent Cover Letter. In this course I got to understand that a cover letter is always accompanied by a resume. I have learnt how to better structure and format a Cover letter and resume in order to be on top when applying for a job in the future. Writing application letter back in High school I thought it was the same as a cover letter.
Additionally, I thought cover letter was just a fancy name for Application letter. After doing a research for presentation on the letter of application I got to understand that the Letter of application is much different from a cover letter. Having learnt this information I was able to point it out to some of my colleagues who have a misconception of the documents.
For example, a Letter of Application can stands on its own, without a resume because it is a more detailed document whereas, a Cover letter is just a brief introduction of yourself so it have to be accompanied by a resume which would make it a complete document. Also, I have learnt that there are two types of application letter. There are Solicited and Unsolicited application letter: Solicited is where you are responding to an advertisement posted in the newspaper. While, Unsolicited is when you are inquiring about any available position. I did not looked on Curriculum Vitae (CV) in this course but during my research I got the understanding

Secondly, I must admit that I found this course to be quite interesting and important to me as a future educator. This course have expand my knowledge on how to prepare very important document that I will be using in the future. I am now better able to write any of these documents in the correct way if I should be called upon to prepare one in the future. What I could have done differently was to pay keen attention to the other presentations that was done in class to educate me more about the other documents. Also, I could have practice to write one business document after each presentation during my spare
A Discourse Community is a group of people whose members share the same goals and use mechanisms to communicate with each other through an acquired, specific lexis that enables individuals to attain goals with the help of other expert and intermediate members.
When looking at a particular discourse community, one can come across a number of genres that are appropriately applied to articles geared toward the discourse community. Looking at the discourse community of the stock market, the two genres that appear the most often are news articles and analysis articles. Both of these genres can be written with an intended audience of either people within the discourse community, or people on the outside of the discourse community. The key point of differentiation, is the language that is used throughout the writing. It can be written using terminology that only people within the discourse community understand, or in a way such that everyone will understand exactly what is meant by the author. In comparing these two genres and two types of audiences, we can better understand exactly how the stock market discourse community is portrayed not only among its insiders, but to everyone else as well.
A discourse community is a group of individuals all with relatively the same ending goal or original interest that all have their own way of participation and have different motives, it is easier to feel more included in a discourse community once literacy achieved. Discourse communities can be found in many different places; it is just a matter of what is being looked for. These communities can come from the entire population, all of the people who speak the English language, any place of education, restaurants, any home, or even at the gym/ recreation center. In order to become literate in the fitness discourse community the differences in basic motives, the values that are important, and the places available to work out at must be understood.
As put by Jen Waak in regarding the human need for community, “By surrounding yourself with others working toward a similar goal, you’ll get...yourself a bit further than you would have done on your own,” (Waak). By being able to see and participate in these different communities centered around different objectives, the goal becomes easier to achieve and bonds the group into something more through trying to reach it. This new unit is called a discourse community and is defined by John Swales as containing six specific characteristics: having a common goal, showing intercommunication and using lexis, having participation within the group, being defined by genres of texts, and having members with areas of expertise for the community. Knowing correct formats, styles, and linguistics can ensure a company that a person will be professional and effective at work. Having exceptional writing skills will assist in getting a job because when a person has those skills they can create a well thought out resume and cover letter. An outstanding resume and cover letter is the first impression a person leaves for an employer. The way a person writes shows who they are and what they can accomplish. When a person has a deficient resume it makes employers unsure of who the person they are considering is. It will make an employer wonder if they are making the right decision and question if the person applying for the position will be able to do the tasks needed to fulfil the job. It is also important to have good writing skills when applying for a job or trying to advance in a job because most jobs require communication through e-mail. Not only does one want to sound professional in a work e-mail but then verbal communication takes place. In the work field a person wanting to advance in their job is most likely going to have to step up and not only answer telephones but they may need to speak in meetings, and write business letters. Overall, I would give this class on a scale of one to ten an eight out of ten. The progression from the introduction of discourse communities to the power point on a specific discourse community went smoothly. The course was well thought out and I felt that it touched all of the necessary material for a composition one course. The only issue that I had with the class would be the cancellation of the classes. I know this may be out of your control but It made it difficult for me whenever I had a question, however, being able to email and get a quick response helped fix the issue.
According to the author, communication has no set uniform restriction of style. Many unique styles appear in all forms of writing. For all styles of writing, make sure grammar, spelling, punctuations, etc., exhibit throughout. When writing, remember to write in a clear and direct manner. Have confidence revealing facts or knowledge and provide examples when needed to help back up the thesis and sub points and to allow for more information about the writing.
The blue collar discourse community is comprised of people from various walks of life that are united under a title, a title that identifies them as manual industrious workers. These workers are the backbone of a nation, they work anywhere from industrial setting to local consumer scale shops. Although our diversity creates language barriers that often lead to us being looked down on by our employers, it allowed an often overlooked form of commutation to ascend.
It is important to have a pad or notebook and pen when going on an interview. The reason is because during the interview you may want to ask questions that you may have forgotten because you are trying to concentrate what the interviewer is asking. If you have pen and notebook then after the interview is over sometimes the interviewer will ask if there are any questions that you may have. Then is the time that you can refer back to your notes to ask questions that you may have. It's always a good habit to always have your resume just in case the interviewer ask to see a copy of it or wants you to leave it just in case they don't get a chance to see it before the interview. In the end, this class has really opened my eyes to everything that is out there to supplement my teaching and my students learning. I am extremely happy that this class did not teach me how to use Microsoft Office , but I do wish that we could have had the opportunity to work more with the material rather than merely reading about the material. The Multimodal Task definitely allowed us to configure a lesson using and working with technology, but if we had more time, I wish we could have done more than one task to accomplish such goals.

If I am to have the opportunity to become part of the managerial sector within the IT industry, I believe I will be more confident and have better listening skills. After this course, I have now clearly identified my strengths and weaknesses and identified opportunities and threats that they provide. Hopefully, if I apply the knowledge I have gained from the course, and apply it to the working world, I will be able to handle situations with more confidence, and show much more calamity and assertiveness. NLP can also be used more effectively when communicating with others. After the continuous and consistent team work available throughout this module, I believe management is a more suitable career option for me. As can be seen previously, effective communication is only achieved with constant practise.
