This portfolio will be comprised of several of my original written pieces from both
English Composition 112 and 112. During both semesters I was able to reach enlightenment through my writing using many technical writing skills that I learned throughout the course of
Dual Enrollment English as a whole. My main English weaknesses during my beginning semester were focused around verb usage, diction, content (mainly from research), and organization (through beginning, middle, and end). Although, towards the end of English
Composition 112, I seemed to have mastered most of these weaknesses and they were now my newfound strengths in writing overall. I still wish to strengthen and overall improve my diction.

After reading just the first chapter of the book Tuesdays with Morrie I knew I would be entirely engaged to write an exceptional expository essay afterwards. Throughout my writing process I began to gather much needed material on my author and book itself. While picking out certain excerpts from Tuesdays with Morrie along my journey of reading this novel, I was able to quantify my writing process as a whole. Firstly, of course after reading my novel, I began a web of a plethora of possible ideas on which direction I wanted to take through this expository paper.
After writing my rough draft I then submitted it to smarthinking and received my report back in no time. After going over the report I did not make any changes yet and opted to rather share my paper with a few of my classmates and accumulate their feedback along with the smarthinking report and then write my final draft. This seemed to work surprisingly well for me and provided me with a lot of feedback to go off of for my final writing of my paper. Through the course of writing my expository paper I gained many different writing skills along the way. I
Tuesdays with Morrie is an inspiring tale in which Mitch, a young man struggling with the concept of a meaningful life is given a second chance, and a new outlook on life when he meets his past teacher, Morrie. They quickly renew the relationship they once possessed in college. Morrie becomes Mitch’s mentor, role model and friend once again. This time around, however, the lessons are on subjects such as life, love, and culture.

Before I start, I do want to mention something. I feel I am starting to come full circle with my assignments. Information I am writing started out as a philosophy paper back in 2010 that changed into college application letter, into something I tried to actually apply in work when I was a substitute teacher, into concept map of pedagogical theory, into a philosophy of assessment, and finally into now philosophy paper--again.
In the summer Sarah and I set a goal to read ten books in three months. That equaled out to be 3 books a month. I was highly skeptical until she turned me on to the author Colleen Hoover. The first book I read of hers was “Hopeless”, needless to say, I finished it in one sitting. I just couldn’t put it down and found it that way with each book I read of hers. When I got to the end of Hopeless I couldn’t believe it was over. It sounds silly to say aloud, but I didn’t entirely know how to feel. Lucky for me, there was a sequel from Holden’s perspective that gave more meaning to the story. In the first month of our reading challenge I finished close to six books including Ugly Love, Maybe Someday, and Finding Cinderella all by Colleen Hoover. The first writing piece i choose from my portfolio was visual analysis. The visual analysis personal was one of the hardest paper I had to write for this semester. It was so challenging because I could not follow the process which I was adjusted to writing to which is, collecting data about a subject and writing about the research I found . With the Visual analysis we were instructed to choose a piece of public visual rhetoric and analysis it using rhetorical terms such as pathos, logos, and ethos. I needed to express my freshly learned rhetoric terms towards a image, than transform what i was seeing into an 4-6 page essay. After revising my paper I was able to see my growth as a writer. It was actually amazing it see the two papers side by side.
My strengths, weaknesses, and preferences as a writer have changed and have been recognized in my eighth grade year. My strengths as a writer are my vivid imagination, my descriptive vocabulary, and my ability to compose factual pieces of writing. I would say that my imagination has changed and upgraded this year because I have experienced, read, seen, and learned so much in such little time of my life. Reading The Outsiders, Out of the Dust, and To Kill a Mockingbird in class have really given me a fresh egg of pure, imaginative power to experience and use. They have also exposed me to more words that I have never seen before, and with the help of my vocabulary book, I have learned a broad spectrum of vocabulary from multiple sources. We have done ten chapters in our vocabulary book and in each chapter there are fifteen words. Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.

When the second quarter's end is around the corner, it is allowing me to reflect on all my pieces of work I have made this quarter and see all the growth I have made during the past few weeks. The writing pieces compared to last quarter have drastically changed and have improved dramatically. I have also noticed a significant change in the annotations I have made in the novel A Tale of Two Cities. The techniques and skills I have learned these two quarters will help me be able to pursue a successful finish to my high school career, my college career, and my actual career I choose to pursue in life.
As I first started this unit I felt a little lost. I struggled to find a place between writing non-fiction and writing for a blog. My pieces were more how-to types of papers that lacked detail or any kind of story. After revising, I am proud of all my pieces of work. I added more tools that are used in fiction writing to make my writing tell more of a story.
