One of the biggest improvements within my documented essay is that I avoided first and second pronouns throughout the paper because I was continually thinking about it. In my other papers one frequent comment would be to avoid these pronouns but I was doing it subconsciously to engage the reader. For some reason, I believed it to be the only way to effectively engage your audience into your writing. Something I probably still need to work on would be writing in a manner that is oriented to my specific needs for the paper. Throughout my writing process I don’t often evaluate how the reader’s needs are being met through my organization or other factors. Throughout my schooling most research papers were based in an argumentative format and I felt myself slip into the habits of writing that type of essay when writing the documented essay. I rewrote the entire paper because I was too biased towards one side and couldn’t fix it without reexamining my structure and what I wanted the paper to display as a whole.
As stated in the previous paragraph, it was a bit difficult to portray both sides of the issue because I had already formed an opinion on the subject matter. Whenever I wrote my paper my word choice was leaning towards my opinion that media was a bad influence. However, my experience in Socratic seminars and debate helped me to fix this issue by discussing my paper with other people and imagining if I was on the other side of the issue. Media, the plural form of medium, describes various ways in which we communicate in society. A phone call, email, radio, computer, news on TV, etc. are all forms of media. In our society today, the media plays a significantly large role in influencing society negatively, twisting one’s perspective of the truth. In author Brooke Gladstone’s, The Influencing Machine, she discusses how media is looked at as an “influencing machine,” that’s controlling the mind of its viewers. Throughout the reading, Gladstone guides her readers through perceptions of media and how it influences them to get readers to understand the truth about media and the manipulation behind it.
Though obviously people are aware of what they are listening to or watching, thoughts and assumptions can drift into their minds without even realizing it. These thoughts that drift in are extremely influential. The massive impact it can have on America's perceptions leads to generalizations, assumptions, and stigmas. Media influence is not always negative, however. In most cases, it has beneficial and positive aspects.
The journey through language and literature has always been an intriguing one for me. It is for this reason that I chose English as my major. It seems that every teacher or professor that I have had, has always been able to pinpoint one specific element in my writing that I need to work on. This has not been a negative thing by any stretch, because with each passing semester there is an element of my literature that will be perfected for the next. This is the wonder that is English, and the reason for my passion in this subject area.
Anyone who is doing any type of writing piece has a process. They may not know it but it is there and it exists. It is one’s approach to their piece and how they go about accomplishing it. It has to do with how you write it, how many drafts you do, as well as your revision process if you even have one. My writing process however has room for improvement. A summation of my writing process consist of heavy planning, one draft, and little revisions. The media, including television programming, cartoons, film, the news, as well as literature and magazines, is a very powerful and pervasive medium for expression. It can reach a large number of people and convey ideas, cultural norms, stereotypic roles, power relationships, ethics, and values. Through these messages, the mass media may have a strong influence on individual behavior, views, and values, as well as in shaping national character and culture. Although there is a great potential for the media to have a positive and affirming effect on the public and society at large, there may be important negative consequences when the messages conveyed are harmful, destructive, or violent.
Recently, I have been writing quite a few essays and papers throughout my college experience. This entails, but not limited to, English, History, and Economics. My style of writing and methods have generally remained the same throughout the process. In this assignment, I will be discussing how I prepare to start a paper, what my thoughts are through the process, and my strengths and weaknesses of what my final drafts look like.

The easiest part of this component was actually inserting it in my essay after I understood the purpose for it, because at the beginning I was confused on the whole thesis concept. The thesis was the most challenging because I kept asking myself "Can I really argue this for five to six pages?" and also "Is this even considered a thesis statement?" My sentence structure has always been strong and I feel it has grown because of the practice we have had in class with finding thesis statements in our readings. My overall issue with this component of the writing process is using a justifiable argument and remembering to support my argument with claims and trying not to put unnecessary points in my paper while maintaining my ethos.
Prior to starting my studies at University, I believed I had a firm grasp on the English language and was a more than competent writer. My history as a songwriter gave me the confidence to express myself clearly and make strong statements. Regular comments in the feedback I received, suggested that I needed to condense my sentences. It had been fifteen years since I last studied and I quickly discovered that academic style writing was a register I was unfamiliar with. I According to Grellier and Goerke (2014) a key element in academic writing is being kind to the reader. This meant using simple language where possible rather than demonstrating grandiloquence. I also discovered that my use of pronouns sometimes leave the reader with too much work to do. I assume the reader can follow my thought process; however, I now understand that I must make my academic writing as simple as possible. Grellier and Goerke (2014) suggest writing in the active voice as often as possible and I know by using too many pronouns my writing can be too passive.
Media bias is any stereotype set forth by the media that portrays individuals to society in a certain way. Media bias doesn?t even have to be a negative portrayal, but more of an inaccurate portrayal of people that helps aid to the ignorance of individuals in society. In the following paper, I will give specific instances where media biases have occurred as well as show that it is a common occurrence that we may not realize. I will also show you why individuals believe that media bias is not a problem because if you can?t blatantly recognize it, how can it be there. I will also show how stereotypes set forth by the media sometimes mirror stereotypes that are set forth by society, and they only exist to help form the belief and value system of society. Taking a creative writing class was a good way for me to express my thoughts and feelings onto paper, as well as read my other classmates stories. Reading stories created by other people lead me into their mind brain to experience what type of writer they were, it was an overall exquisite class. I believe that every person has a way of expressing who they are through writing stories of their own, fiction is the best way to express your creative imagination. This class that I took for two years helped me become a better writer and helped me understand the types of writers we have.
