1. State whether the characteristics of a quality lesson were present for all students in your elementary physical education classes as a child.
For myself, a quality lesson was present when I was in physical education classes as a child in elementary school. It may have been presented that way as I was an active person in my own right. Probably more than a lot of people in my class. With that being said, it was not evident that any special treatment was given to those of better performance levels or ignorance towards the students who didn’t know or perform a certain activity as well as somebody else.

This topic paper discusses the book Teaching the Nuts and Bolts of Physical Education, which was published in 2008. The accompanying CD-ROM with sample lesson plans was not provided with the book. This book is really a guide to teaching 17 manipulative and 8 locomotor skills that children ages 5 to 12 will learn in physical education class. I will briefly discuss a couple of these skills with a suggested activity. This is a handy guide for a future physical education teacher. There are drawings and steps for each skill and key words or “cues” are also given. Finally, there are “troubleshooting” tips provided to use when a child is not performing the skill correctly and suggestions for practice activities to help children learn the skill. Truly this is a “nuts and bolts” book. It is really more of an instruction manual. I will begin with the skills taught in the book.
I was in Ohio when I first came to America as an Chinese exchange student, I live in a little town surrounded by endless corn fields, basically in the middle of nowhere. I went to a small public high school, which has only 2 Chinese students, including me. All of a sudden my world is completely changed, nothing from my old days is left, and I’m totally not ready for that. Sport Education is done and taught by teachers to get kids involved in physical activity and to keep them motivated to learn. The most important thing is to keep the kids wanting to come to class and having them be physically fit. In the long run, Sport Education benefits every child that is involved and hopefully they will want to continue sports and activities outside of the classroom for the rest of their life.
When you become a teacher of any subject you use different styles of teachings that reflect you as a teacher and the lesson you are trying to teach. Sometimes it can be difficult to find what styles may work best in different situations. When teaching physical education the most helpful and beneficial styles are indirect, direct, and interactive teaching. These teaching styles are critical when trying to teach physical education because they are proven to be effective. These styles will help make you an effective teacher because of the way they allow you to control and manage the information being taught. When teaching physical education these styles when incorporate to your class make you a more affective teacher. These three styles allow you to accomplish different things in your class room and different types of teaching methods. These styles are important to not only know but to master, so you as a teacher can be effective.
Students need feedback, clear expectations, and a schedule to follow throughout the day so that teachers spend less time directing behavior and more time is spent actively engaged in learning. There should be more time consumed on strengthening positive behavior and fewer on the negative.
Another benefit is feedback affords an opportunity for clarification of what is expected. Student performance and achievement increases as they are able to understand the expectations for the specified task or project. This process also helps alleviate frustrations one may feel when unsure of the criteria for quality performance. Feedback also helps students identify strengths and weaknesses in various content arenas. Effective feedback from the teacher assists in student identification of the level of which they are performing as compared to the desired goal.
Many schools have different frameworks which outline what makes for effective teaching and learning in a classroom, these follow quite closely with the teacher’s standards.
