Introduction: Defining Motivation
According to Robbins & Judge (2009), motivation is the result of the interaction between an individual and a situation. Further, motivation is defined as the processes that account for an individual’s intensity, direction, and persistence of effort toward attaining a goal, more specifically, organizational goals in order to reflect our singular interest in work-related behavior (p. 175).
The fact is each of us has his own style, his own preferences, and his own ways of facing life’s challenges. One person’s laidback style is another person’s lack of motivation. Someone’s need to keep up with change is someone else’s conviction to not fix what ain’t broken. Those differences in style can lead to a great deal

During this time, many of my colleagues reported to work but we lacked motivation to actually be productive. We were very concerned with our financial situations and we were unsure as to when we would be compensated for the days worked. Unfortunately, Congress did not reach an agreement in time for our next pay period, and we were therefore, no paid. For an entire month many of us were stressed and worried what was coming next, but thankfully, the shutdown ended after the first pay period and we also received back pay for the first pay …show more content…
The positive affect is a mood dimension that consists of specific positive emotions such as excitement, self-assurance, and cheerfulness at the high end and boredom, sluggishness, and tiredness at the low end. On the other hand, the negative affect is a mood dimension that consists of emotions such as nervousness, stress, and anxiety at the high end and relaxation, tranquility, and poise at the low end (Robbins & Judge, p. 255). Charles Darwin argued that emotions developed over time to help humans solve problems, because emotions are useful due to the fact that they motivate people to engage in actions that are important for
According to Robbins et al; (Robbins et al, pg 296) motivation refers to the process by which a persons efforts are energized, sustained, and directed towards a goal. This definition has three key elements: energy, direction, and persistence. Motivation is a complex and important subject, has historically been given a great deal of attention by Psychologists, who have proposed theories to explain it. (Riggio, pg 188),
the point where if someone is not happy 100 percent of the time, they are told to seek immediate help. But what is the point of having thousands of other emotionssadness, anger, and fearif a person is only supposed to feel one? Positive psychologists believe that instead of being sad or having neutral feelings, individuals should be happy. From another point of view, Susan David, author of “Don’t Worry Be Gloomy,” and Sharon Begley, author of “Happiness: Enough Already,” both agree that having “negative” emotions is not as defective as people portray them to be. Experiencing other emotions is just as important in life as happiness , and should not be shunned, because these emotions contribute to thinking clearly, encouraging perseverance, and, in the end, making people unintentionally happy.
What is motivation? According to text, motivation is defined as a set of factors that activate, direct, and maintain behavior, usually toward a certain goal. Motivation is the energy that makes us do things: this is a result of our individual needs being satisfied so that we have inspiration to complete the mission. These needs vary from person to person as everybody has their individual needs to motivate themselves. Depending on how motivated we are, it may further determine the effort we put into our work and therefore increase the standard of the productivity. There have been a wide variety of theories about motivation developed over the years. Several are drive-reduction theory, arousal theory, psychosocial (both incentive and cognitive) theory, and Maslow’s H...
All of our emotions play a big role in our lives. Even though it does not feel like it at the moment, negative feelings can be a good thing. If we never become sad, angry, or scared we would not be able to appreciate the true value of happiness, we would only focus on ourselves and happiness, and we would become less alert to threats and dangerous situations around us.
Throughout history, motivation has been one of the components to survival. Motivation is needed to get up in the morning and go on about the day in order to survive. As humans began to evolve, so did society, which meant our drive and motivation were derived from different goals rather than one common one. Rather than depending on biological drive, humans started to depend on the system of rewarding the good behavior and punishing the bad. This operating is known as Motivation 2.0 (Pink, 2009). However, this method is flawed due to the fact that this implies that humans are no different from a herd of livestock.
This is one of the many sayings that are easier said than done. The one thing most people lack in order to accomplish this goal is the lack of motivation. Many people make the decision to change their lives because they don’t feel as though they are living to their fullest potential. Most people change their lives because either they have learned a lot throughout the years or they have gotten tired of the same old thing day in and day out, kinda like how Arnold feels in the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. In the book we see it again when Arnold talks about not living to your fullest potential because in one of the chapters he talks about how he’s poor and living in poverty, “Poverty doesn’t give you strength or teach you lessons about perseverance.
What is Motivation? Motivation can be described as a driving force within us. It makes people try and achieve certain targets in order to satisfy a particular need or expectation. It makes an individual behave in a certain way and makes them make decisions to act in a certain way and to continue with these actions until they satisfy their needs and expectations.
According to Greenberg (1999) motivation is defined "as a process of arousing, directing and maintaining behaviour towards a goal." Where directing' refers to the selection of a particular behaviour; and maintenance' refers to the inclination to behave with consistency in that manner until the desired outcome is met.
Motivation is an important concept which is critical for understanding of and improvement in organizational behaviour and performance. It is therefore important for the managers to understand motivation. It is an important tool which they can use to get more out of their employees and increase organizational performance. Motivation can be defined as the factors, both internal as well as external which arouse in individuals the desire and commitment for a job (Mele, 2005, p. 15). Organizational performance on the other hand refers to the degree to which the organizational objectives have been achieved.
In common words, if we have to describe it then it is the way through which employees will get attracted to and will perform their work in a better way. Motivation is basically the willingness to exert high levels of effort to mainly reach out to the organizational goals, in linked to satisfy one’s need and then moving ahead.
I participated in relias learning through my work. I engaged in completing five classes that were related to Motivational Interviewing. I learned several things through these courses. I saw this method used working with the population I am working with as well as in other areas.

Motivation is the concept of stimulating or arousing a person to achieve a goal. Motivation has much to do with desire and ambition, and if they are absent, motivation is absent too (What is Motivation and How to Strengthen It, para. 1). Motivation theories are unique to each organization. Some organizations have come up with motivation theories such as setting work goals, job performance evaluations, and fair treatment policies within the work environment to keep employees motivated. The impact that individuals, groups and structures have on behavior within organizations is Organizational Behavior. Motivation is affected by organizational behaviors, which is why different organizations apply motivation theories to motivate employees.
Motivation is best defined as the needs, wants, and beliefs that drive an individual. It is the basis of what people work for and keeps them doing things they otherwise would never do. People act in a whole new manner when they are motivated by something. Motivation gives them a whole new perception of the task at hand. Motivation is not always positive though, and it does not always just come from one place, for example, your boss. Motivation can be negative by not receiving something, and contrary to popular belief it is not always money that motivates people to do what they do. People have different needs, wants, and desires and the finding what is most important to those individuals is the key to motivation. People and companies have used countless techniques and approaches to motivate others and employees, but what works for one person does not necessarily work for the other.
