In the story Thank you M’am by Langston Hughes, the main character Roger is determined character because he is determined to be grateful He is determined to earn respect. He is determined to get more money. One of the reasons why Roger is determined is he wants to earn respect from Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones. A lady that Roger tried to mug, she also works at a hotel beauty-shop A piece of evidence for that is he tries to earn her respect by being good what I mean by that is when he had the option to run out the door when she told him to wash his face. His hold on civilization and the terms of nice society are the weakest and the first to decay. Roger’s inner beast stirs slowly at first when he, in only the fourth chapter,“stooped, picked up a stone, aimed, and threw it at Henry” (Golding 62). Fortunately for the younger boy, Roger was restrained by a lingering consciousness of the rules of civilized life and did not throw to hit. However, it is clear that the idea of hurting, of maiming Henry was fascinating to Roger. If the human soul is not wicked to begin with, then why would children who have no cause to hate each other desire to hurt one another? Later in the book, Roger’s sense of morals decomposes completely, leaving a sadistic savage in its place who tortures SamnEric and murders
Unshakable willpower can describe someone whose single-minded and persistent. This meaning their outlook or point of view on a situation will never change, no matter the obstacles or consequences. In Sophocles’ Antigone He shows several encounters of unshakeable willpower through two of his most persistent characters. For an example, Antigone rebelling against a law and Haemon challenging his own father. The two characters only have self-beliefs to go off of for their rebellion, against the king. Their uprising could bring severe or even fatal disaster. Sophocles presents an abundant amount of evidence for determination through Antigone and Haemon. He indicates through the actions of the unyielding Antigone and her
Roger, a quiet, savage child, assists Jack in his evil intentions, and creates havoc and dishonesty with the rest of the stranded children. Before Piggy's death, Roger was standing alone hovering over the lever in which killed Piggy. Roger shows his evil by, "...with a sense of delirious abandonment, he leaned all his weight on the lever," (Golding 180). Roger could care less about the conch, the mourning of Piggy, or about going home. However, killing Piggy drew all his effort. Killing and teasing were his destiny, it was his entertainment and he desired it. Another example of Roger's sinister personality, is showed in the ruins of Johnny's and Percival's castle. Coming out of the forest, "...Roger and Maurice were relieved from their
Self-determination is a person's belief in their right to decide for themselves. People who possess effective self-determination skills are more inclined to transition into adulthood successfully. Self-determination is a combination of factors that allows a person to be more decisive in life. The skills involved with self-determination; like goal setting, problem solving, and decision making, enables a person to understand one's own strengths and limitations, as well as provide a stronger belief in one's capabilities (Bremer, Kachgal, & Schoeller, 2011).
People ask, ”What drives us to undertake a mission?”. So, what does drive us to undertake a mission? Well, after reading the texts Barrio Boy, and Apollo 13 I think the answer is determination. Both Ernesto and the Apollo 13 astronauts used determination to undertake their missions.

The quality of unimaginable success is determined by grit. Despite confronting difficult life circumstances that delay the process individuals who are passionate, intelligent, and dedicated to one’s own success will continue maintaining consistency throughout their journey. Success is measured by an individuals’ commitment to effectively work hard towards life-changing goals. In the journal article “Grit: Perseverance and Passion for Long-term Goals,” Angela L. Duckworth conducts several studies in order to convey human’s capacity for higher achievements while still enduring challenges and failure. Although Duckworth’s research has proven that individuals who are less gritty tend to shift trajectory, I believe working hard and keeping “stamina” is essentially the key to achieving your goals (1088).
“Gritty people sometimes exhibit what psychologists call ‘nonproductive persistence’: They try, try again, though the result may be either unremitting failure” (Kohn). When people think of grit, they often think of the positive outcomes associated with passion and perseverance. However, grit can have some irreparably damaging effects on an individual. Never feeling accomplished or satisfied with their achievements, these people are often too gritty for their own good. “Persistence can actually backfire and distract from more important goals.” (Kohn). Without purpose, it is virtually impossible to be successful through
Being determined is one thing, but succeeding is another. You cannot succeed without a plan or goal to fall back on. This is how Gritty can comes into play. Grit is the official standard of pushing yourself and to have courage while doing what you do best. A growth mindset is believing what you can develop your intelligence and skills through effort and hard work. However, being gritty does help a person with a growth mindset. I say this because determination and success is a major growth mindset. Grit and growth mindset are both powerful tools that become successful in life. Making a change, not making failure rule your life. Implication for success, making grit and mindset work together to support success and change.
In the beginning of the story, while Mrs. Jones is dragging Roger to her house, she tells him that his face is dirty. She says, “And your face is dirty. I got a great mind to wash your face for you. Ain't you got nobody home to tell you to wash your face?” “No’m”, said the boy. “Then it will get washed this evening”, (Pg. 6 lines 36-40). Here, Roger’s response to Mrs. Jones’s question could mean that his circumstances at home might not be so great. Mrs. Jones scolded him about his face, but then she helped the boy by telling him that his face will be washed. She scolded him, but also helped him and felt pity for him.
A determination is a driving force that helps people through rough times in their lives. Without determination, people would no longer strive for their goals. Throughout the short story, ‘Then Later, His Ghost,’ Sarah Hall shows how strength and determination can get you through these tough times. This theme is made clear through the severe setting the characters are faced with and her use of symbolism.
Being persistent means to keep going even if there are obstacles in the way. In The Other Side of the Sky and The Song of the Wandering Aengus; the main characters kept going to complete their mission. For example, Farah Ahmedi(The Other Side of the Sky) and her mother wanted to leave their war torn country. This was risky because as it said in the story, “The gate Pakistan was closed, and I could see that the Pakistani border guards were letting no on through. People were pushing, shoving and jostling up against the gate.”( Ahemdi,line 1-2) As you could see, the entrance of the gate was getting dangerous but, she was persistent and suggested that they stay and try to get through. In I The Song of the Wandering Aengus;
Roger Chillingworth proves to be a character whose evil is held inside and only builds up as he lets little amounts out on his “enemy.” He seems to find himself holding most of his evil inside and only
