In today’s society there are several historical events that are portrayed in movies or sometimes even plays. However, these events tend to get misinterpreted in ways that do not tell the true meaning of a particular history event. History repeats itself continuously and the most important events that went on throughout history, such as, wars are very important to be told throughout our society today, so therefore it will not repeat itself once again. We also have people that like to tell a war as sweet as possible and every detail of the wars are not spoken of. We tend to leave all of the bloody gory parts out, but in society today the people need to hear and know what all went on in our country. When everything was either, you fight for this, …show more content…
The two outfits between the two armies in the film were not correctly portrayed. In the movie all British soldiers wore red uniforms and all the Continental soldiers had blue coats and white trousers. However, in the era of these wars actually took place all British soldiers did not wear red uniforms and less Continental soldiers wore blue coats and white trousers. The film could have maybe changed this somehow by representing the two different armies by what they actually wore because the audience could have gotten confused on which one was which due to the fact that they did not wear this much clothing during this time. However, in the movie Mel Gibson is mostly in boots, tight pants, and a white loose shirt. The Continental army had vey little clothing, tents, and places to go. The Patriot did not portray this in the film. They made the Continentals look nice and almost kind of rich. The audience did not get the actual picture of what they looked like during this wars era. This was an excellent part of the movie that could have been shown what they actually wore. In today’s society we like to make everything modern and very up to date. Costumes can get easily misinterpreted and not show the true meaning of what they actually wore. This can convey us as humans to think they did not have it bad or maybe even make us think that they did not need any sympathy because they had it all. A film always has a story line and just one little costume change can make the audience has a different outlook on previous history events. Not only must we be taken through all of the different traumatic wars we as well need to get the full picture of what times were like during those rough times during this massive war that took
The Revolutionary war, sparked by the colonist’s anger towards taxation without representation, was a conflict between the United States and its mother country Great Britain. This event had been considered the most significant event in the American history. It separated the thirteen colonies from the tyrannical ruling of King George. The revolutionary war was not a big war, “The military conflict was, by the standards of later wars, a relatively modest one. Battle deaths on the American side totaled fewer than 5,000”1. However, the war proved that the thirteen colonies were capable of defeating the powerful Great Britain. Over the years there were many Hollywood films made based on the revolutionary war, 1776, Revolution, Johnny Tremain, and The Patriot. But, no movie has stirred up as much controversy as the Mel Gibbson movie The Patriot. The patriot is very entertaining but it is historically inaccurate. Too much Hollywood “spices” was added to the movie for viewing pleasures.
During the Civil War, there were people who were extremely prejudiced against the 54th regiment because the soldiers were all different colored skin and the people where used to the idea that different color skinned people worked as slaves. In “Glory,“ Colonel Montgomery, the Sargent that trained and prepared them for war, and the colonel that was in charge of distributing necessities, served as the people who discriminated the African American soldiers. When he was teaching the soldiers how to march, some of them couldn’t tell the difference between left and right. He acted as if all African Americans were uneducated and they were hopeless to teach. Shoes were an essential part of training. Many of the African American soldiers didn‘t even have decent shoes when they enrolled for the war. Naturally, after all the training, their shoes wore down. If the 54th regiment were composed of white soldiers, the department that passed out shoes would already have prepared extra shoes for them. But since the 54th regiment was composed of all African Americans, the regiment was discriminated and there were no extra shoes for them. The other white generals thought the 54th regiment would never go on a battlefield and even if they did, they probably would all die. Therefore there were no extra resources for them. Another fact that there were some racist sentiments was that the African American soldiers only got a $10 pay while the white soldiers got $13.
In conclusion, while books, photos, movies and other historical documentation can portray information or a message about wartime events, they will never be able to produce the feelings of those that were personally involved in wars have experienced. Yet, it is incorrect to criticize these writers. The information they reveal is still very important historical information. Even if a reader or viewer of this media cannot feel exactly the same emotions as those involved, they still often experience an emotional connection to the events being depicted. This is important, not only for the historical knowledge gained about wars, but also to understand the nature and futility of their occurrence.
The study of past events have been a common practice of mankind since the verbal telling of stories by our ancestors. William Cronon, in his article “Why the Past Matters,” asserts that the remembrance of the past “keeps us in place.” Our individual memories and experiences shape how we act in our daily lives. In addition to influencing us at an individual level, our collective history binds us together as a society. Without knowing where we have been or what we have experienced, it is nearly impossible to judge progress or know which courses of action to pursue. The goal of the historian is to analyze and explain past events, of which they rarely have firsthand memory of, and apply the gained knowledge to make connections with current and future events.
In order to influence the future positively, we have to understand and take responsibility for the past, its positive as well as its negative accomplishments. But how is this to be done, how do we deal with history personally and politically? The author Tim O'Brian gives us one answer in "How to Tell a True War Story" on page 69: "You can tell a true war story if it embarrasses you. " If you don't care for obscenity, you don't care for the truth; if you don't care for the truth, watch how you vote. Send guys to war, they come home talking dirty".
The movie gave the viewers a picture of what it was like to fight in a war in that era and having to fight face to face with your opponent. Mel Gibson did a wonderful job of transforming his character Benjamin Martin from a gentle man who had renounced his violent past and who at the beginning was opposed of going to war to an enraged father who will let no one stand in his way in his quest for revenge. Another great actor in the Patriot was Jason Isaacs who plays a sadistic British Coronel who murdered Benjamin’s sons and burned down a church full of people. The movie had an abundance of blood, gore, and violent death scenes, which comes with the territory of a war movie. The movie though based on the Revolutionary War comes across as more of a story about a father’s lust for vengeance for his young son’s death than about the details about why the war was actually happening. The film could have focused a little less on Benjamin and his need for blood and more on the war itself. The movie was not all blood and guts though there was a side of romance in the movie as well, though it seemed a little pointless to the plot. Benjamin and his sister in law Charlotte, have a budding romance in the movie as well as Benjamin’s oldest son Gabriel. When you
The continental army was on the lower side of the hill when it came down to comparison. The army was not well-fed, not well trained, and all around not really an army often fighting with each other2. The Army had many struggles that ranged from malnourishment all the way to not having enough people to fight7. The Continental Congress had been in control of this army since 1775 but one issue they had since day one was the lack of funds need to feed, clothe and arm the army that would later win the war and help declare independence of America7. Off an enlistment from dated June 1776 were these expectations “a good effective Firearm . . .
At the start of the war, many people, including president Abraham Lincoln, thought that the few battles wouldn’t turn into much and that the fighting would be over soon. Clearly, they were wrong. As the fighting continued, uniforms became necessary in order to stop men from shooting others on their own sides. When uniforms were first created, they were very inconsistent in the way they were made. Styles of clothing depended on where they were made or who made them. Many s...
The Continental army had many hardships, for example illness, injuries, lack of shelter, lack of food and death. This is why most people quit the Continental Army in fear of losing their lives. They knew the hardships that lay ahead, but this was worse than what they called for. They also had families they had to look after and wives to spend time with. This was more important than fighting against the British.
...ough The Patriot is not entirely accurate, it is an emotional, action packed movie with a strong story line and good acting. The story line is easily understood, and therefore is recommended for males and females who are in high school, at least. Viewers should have prior knowledge about the American Revolution, and should have sufficient knowledge to be able to point out some of the inaccuracies. The characters in The Patriot, do an excellent job of showing the viewers the emotions and what it takes to be prepared for battle, both physically and mentally. The setting of this movie is also incredibly beautiful, and will appeal to anyone interested in landscape or travel. The Patriot is an incredibly suspenseful movie, and will certainly spark interest in the American Revolution, bringing forth the ambition to continue research and study of the American Revolution.
Films are necessary in our time period because the human eye can articulate the message intended through sight allowing visual imagination to occur. In the book, world 2 by Max Brooks, he creates a character by the name Roy Elliot who was a former movie director. Roy Elliot manages to make a movie titled “Victory at Avalon: The Battle of the Five Colleges” and some how it goes viral. Similarly, Frank Capra’s film, “Why we Fight” expresses a sense of understanding the meaning of wars. Films do not inevitably portray truth because they display what the film director views as important and beneficial for people to know.
FASHION is a play that permeates throughout the centuries. Its themes about fashion and our treatment of it speak strongly to each subsequent generation in America. What is important to us? What matters most to us? How do we want others to see us? How do we want others to accept us? It would be just as easy to produce the play contemporarily today with just a few adjustments. The audience would certainly understand it, and many would see themselves within it.
Lois R. Robley remarks that “the horrors of war cannot be imagined by those of us who have not witnessed it. It is perhaps up to the poets, the writers, the movie directors, and the photojournalists to distill and recapture the images that remind us of the traumatic influence of war. Perhaps only then can we extinguish the need to be reminded and ready for war related PTSD.”
The film industry has become a large part of part of human culture for over a millennium. Since the development of the motion picture camera in the 1890s, shortly followed by the establishment of production companies, film has vastly gained popularity. While there are many different reasons of the existence of films, one of the main purposes is to convey a message to the viewer. Climate change and the environment is a frequently discussed topic in films. This essay will discuss three common facts and fallacies found in popular movie culture by comparison of peer reviewed journals.
History lapses from millions and millions of years ago. With all these different events that have taken place, historical figures, and artifacts, how do we expose these things to our publics? Public history is not clearly defined, but in the textbook, Introduction to Public History, the early founder of an early graduate program in public history, Robert Kelly, defined it as, “The employment of historians and the historical method outside of academia”(Lyons, pg.1-2). I believe it is ways that history is applied to real-world issues through the considerations of public audiences, shared authority, collaboration, and reflective practice. This practice is focused on the general audiences rather than academia, it is about what a diverse group
