Keep the Guns Away But Keep Our Children Safe
How would you feel if your child was to come home and tell you that, that one angry grumpy teacher is now allow to carry a gun to school? That seems pretty mediocre, I know if I was to have a child I wouldn’t be ok with it. Some politicians are trying to decide on rather or not should teachers be allowed to carry guns to school for protection. Due to the recent gun incidents in the schools all across the world, politicians are really considering rather teachers should be equipped with guns to protect theirselves and the children under their supervision. I personally don’t think that this is such a great idea, as a matter of fact it’s ludicrous. Teachers shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns in the school because the generation isn’t quite ready for that change in history, that’s the reason we have resource officers in the schools, and adding another gun to situation isn’t going to always be a good solution .

The way how the kids in this generation act is ridiculous. They are very disrespectful, just imagine a teacher student argument taking place then all of a sudden the teacher gets very frustrated because the student is being very rude and obnoxious .Worst case scenario it could be reversed and since the students know that the teachers are equipped with guns they will push the teachers to their limits just for the fun of it and that one decision of allowing teachers to carry guns then turns into a major
Arming teachers is deranged. Many teachers or potential teachers may shy away from their dreams or future plans of being a teacher with forcing him/her to carry guns and police student’s.
One of the biggest debates in education is how to respond to gun violence in schools. According to BBC, “There were 64 school shootings in 2015” (BBC). One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. Bringing more guns into a school is not the answer to gun violence. Most people that defend the idea that guns will “help” keep schools safe have basically three points: (1) teachers will be trained in gun safety, (2) it helps deter potential school shooters, and (3) it will make the students feel more safe. Even though there is some truth to those points, I think that the cons of arming teachers vastly outweigh the pros of arming teachers.
That is why Rebekah Elliott’s article “The Real School Safety Debate: Why Legislative Responses Should Focus on Schools and Not on Guns” would be valuable to include. Elliot writes that to properly provide safety into schools is to put more funding into higher security and individual school safety programs. Like many writers, she agrees that the Sandy Hook incident shifted America’s views on the second amendment but she believes that having armed teachers could be a safety risk in itself. Her argument is that although it would be more cost efficient to arm teachers than to hire more security, it could increase the liability for negligence if there was a result in injuring a student (2015
Everyone knows that parents’ first worry is the safety of their children. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting. Shootings like Sandy Hook and Columbine left parents, administrators, and educators feeling the need to be proactive towards children’s safety. Reacting to situations like these is not good enough when children’s lives are on the line. Administration has started to brainstorm different ways to help insure the protection of their students. The idea of having teachers carry concealed weapons has been on the front burner for quite some time. As a result of this extreme idea, insurance companies have started to increase or even cancel policies with schools that have armed teachers because of the high risk they are putting themselves at. Parents and administrators also worry about the idea of children getting their hands on one of the teachers’ weapons and injuring themselves or other students. Because this idea seems quite extreme, I believe there are other alternatives that are less dramatic and more positively out looked, such as having armed security guards in schools.
One reason teachers should not be able to carry guns because guns are currently illegal in schools; Guns are illegal because they are dangerous. The Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) is a federal law that was accepted in the United States in 1990. According to the GFSZA, “It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” In order for teachers to carry guns, we would have to discard this law. Also, the school board would have to create a new policy, allowing teachers to carry guns. Adjusting the rules would be time consuming and confusing. Changing the GFSZA would make students tense and distract children from learning. Citizens from CNN Politics say, “72.4% of educators said they would be unlikely to bring a firearm to school if allowed to do so.” This data shows that the majority of teachers do not even want possession of a gun in the classroom. School officers have the right to carry guns, teachers should just focus on education. Not only does it create a huge responsibility, there would also need to be a large financial investment to supply guns for every school. This money would be hard to come up with, and not everyone is in favor of sacrificing money for firearms.
My recently divorced History professor seemed to be in an extremely foul mood one dreary Monday morning. Every move and comment the class made seemed to irritate him more and more. Everyone in the room stopped moving and talking in concern for him, everyone except Josh, who is our class clown. He made the decision to make a comment to our teacher that any other day would have broken the ice and class would have resumed. For some reason, on this particular day it was the straw that broke the camel’s back. My professor looked up from the floor and in a matter of seconds had removed a gun provided to him by the school for protection, from under his jacket, and then shot Josh before anyone could do anything to stop him. Although, this is a story of fiction and never really happened, it could become a headline on the six o’clock news if David McGrath gets his way. He is the author of an article that supports teachers being given loaded weapons for protection in the classroom. To me providing teachers with weapons is a drastic move because the epidemic of school shootings is not as big as McGrath makes it out to be and there are many more sensible solutions that have yet to be explored.
School shootings have the ability to be stopped. They are largely one of the worst repeated tragedies our great nation has endured, and they should be stopped today! No terrorist wants to go out in his/her infamous blaze of “glory” by failing in their attempt. Arming educators has the capability to end school shootings in this decade. “And I haven’t even touched upon the pure deterrent effect of a potential mass murderer having to worry one of his targets might be armed” (Concealed Weapons). This quote presents the very real possibility that just if teachers are armed, future shooters will reconsider and possibly not attempt it at all. Providing this overwhelming deterrent in the foremost thoughts of a would be murderer emphasizes the positive effect concealed weapons operated by teachers could
In a couple of years, American people had very tragic and painful times, in past years we saw elementary and a high school shooting. After seeing innocent students getting killed in their school, some politicians of this country are trying to change a couple of the laws for the schools in the United States. They want all the teachers to carry a concealed weapon at the school, and nobody will know if the teachers are carrying a gun at the school or not. This law does not require to tell the parents of the students, that their kid’s teacher is carrying a concealed weapon a weapon while he/she teaching them. I believe that teachers should not be allowed to carry a concealed weapon at the school because it is unsafe for the students, teachers are
Gun laws are an important key to consider. There are pistols and machine weapons as well. If a teacher were to carry a gun, it would be a handgun type and an attacker could easily carry a machine weapon. A handgun is hardly a legitimate defense mechanism against a machine gun. A machine gun can carry forty five to sixty rounds, whereas a handgun can only carry about nine bullets (Glennon). If a machine gun that an attacker brings has that many bullets and is automatic, a pistol isn’t going to do anything unless shot first. Also the government interferes in the problem of guns because the need for gun control. “Roughly sixteen thousands two hundred and thirty seven murders were committed in the United States in 2008 of these about ten thousand two hundred eighty-eight, or 67% were committed with firearms” (Agresti,Smith). Also the government has right to carry laws which enables citizens the right to carry a firearm if one can pass a background check and a gun safety course. Forty out of the United States fifty states has agreed to let people who meet certain criteria to carry firearms, and the other ten are indecisive or completely disagree (Agresti,Smith). This shows that the population as a whole has the right to carry guns if legally allowed, but not teachers just because s...
Wouldn’t you feel a great sense of relief if you knew that your child was being protected at all cost while at school? Teachers carry a lot of weight on their shoulders just by walking into the classroom daily. This added level of security would not only protect our children but it also protects the teachers and other staff members as well. Teachers being allowed to carry handguns while in class should be a discussion that every parent should have.
On the side if teachers were to carry guns students and parents may be more scared. “When violent force is upheld as safety, fear and silence creep in”(Corbett huffington post). “Kids get their hands on guns, and they know how to use them”( Corbett huffington post). “I have a patient who recalls his silent car rides with his father who kept two guns under the driver’s seat. Silently the boy watched, on guard, even though nothing ever happened. But then again nothing was ever
Allowing teachers to carry is a big step in our Nation. Not all teachers should be allowed to carry. President Trump says “I want certain highly adept people, people who understand weaponry, guns,” (Proulx). Teachers and school staff who want to carry should have extensive background checks. They should be willing to protect the students that are in their care, and not be afraid to use a gun when put in this type of
One reason why teachers should not be armed is because having more guns in one place will mean the more likely a chance for more violence to happen. When teachers at school are armed, they aren't the only people who has access to that gun; a student could overpower a teacher and take the gun away, and start another shooting. A student could also steal the gun without the teacher ever knowing, and the teacher could be shot and killed, along with other people. The teacher could also be in a very tough situation, where people are yelling and the arguments just get worse, so the teacher could over react and accidentally injure or kill someone.
A lot of people want to know what actions can students and adults take to help prevent these sort of things from happening? Well, first of all, we could do what I talked about in the first paragraph and install metal detectors in every school And put more than one police officer at each school. We could also encourage students to not bully others. By doing this we could lower the number of angry and upset students and make them feel safe therefore not bringing any type of weapon to school.
Would you feel safer at school if a teacher could carry a Firearm or would you rather have a teacher that just teaches the basics of school, it sounds like a good idea but could have very negative drawbacks. So what do you choose an ordinary teacher or a trigger happy teacher.Teachers carrying firearms will reduce the school shooting in America some people say, but could it cause more trouble than what its worth like could it provide an easier access for children to the weapons.Allowing teachers to carry firearms provides a good layer of security over the students and can reduce the amount of school shootings, but it can cause stress on the students and it also provides an easier access to weapons if that child has none at home so this idea
