Every day in America a student brings a weapon to school, sometimes injuring or even killing people. But why do they do this and how does it happen? There are lots of things that can cause this to happen. I’m going to let you in on a few of them.
The first question I am going to answer is how do weapons even get in schools?
Well, the truth is that there is no way to detect concealed weapons. There are not any metal detectors and you don't get a pat-down every day before you go to class. So as I am writing this paper at my desk, the person sitting next to me that I talk to every day and think they are normal could have a gun on them and I wouldn’t even have a clue. According to Wach.com, a SC lawmaker said that “We have to put metal detectors

in every school ASAP. Why wait until another tragedy happens then take action?” That’s something to think about. The next thing is what drives students to bring guns or knives to school?
According to Reuters.com, the main reason students bring weapons to school is because of bullying. It says that teens that are bullied are 2 times more likely to bring a weapon to school.
A lot of people want to know what actions can students and adults take to help prevent these sort of things from happening? Well, first of all, we could do what I talked about in the first paragraph and install metal detectors in every school And put more than one police officer at each school. We could also encourage students to not bully others. By doing this we could lower the number of angry and upset students and make them feel safe therefore not bringing any type of weapon to school.
That being said, how do kids gain access to these weapons? The answer, according to ohiovalleyresource.org is that most of the school shootings that have happened the shooter got the gun from their parents by sneaking into their room while they're asleep. That's was the main way. But parents also let their kids have knives and even guns. I feel like not one person under the age of 18 should have a firearm no one! that is one way a student could easily bring a weapon to school. He would have easy access to the
weapon. Kids can also get weapons from a friend or relative and not tell their parents. That is a scary thought. I encourage parents to search their kid's room and persons often especially if it could prevent a tragedy. And finally I am going to tell you a something I experienced. It was a normal day at my middle school and it was after lunch. usually the other kids go outside and I stay in and go to the library with a couple of my buddies. We were on our way to the library when another student stopped me and said he had a knife. I thought he was kidding me until he pulled it out and showed me. I waited until he walked away and immediately went to the school resource officer because I didn't know if he had bad intentions or not. The officer then located the student and removed the weapon. I didn't know if the kid was going to do anything bad with it and these days you don't even know so I feel like I did the right thing and could have potentially saved lives. This just goes to show you that any one at any time could have a weapon on them at school and know one would know until it is unfortunately too late. As you can see this is a growing problem all over the world and it needs to be stopped but the first step to that is informing. And informing is what I just did. Hopefully people will figure out how these sort of things happen and will band together to make schools more safer across america and the world. We can't keep waiting for another shooting or stabbing to happen to take just one more precaution and sign one more bill. We need to take every precaution and make every rule now before we lose more innocent lives!
Why would a student feel the need to carry a concealed weapon on campus? After all they’re headed to a “school” not a war zone. Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Texas, and Wisconsin are the only states that allow concealed weapons on campus. Arizona and other states let schools decide the policy on weapons. Many states prohibited concealed weapons on campus which is the right choice. Most colleges who allow their students to carry concealed weapons increase the chances of violence on campus. College students must be unable to carry concealed weapons on
On the essay, David, Skorton and Glenn Altschuler also point out how uneasy police officers feel at the idea of having students with guns on campus, because in the case of a tragedy happening there is no distinction between the innocent students is and the delinquent. A “former provost of Idaho State University” stated her concern about the insecurities towards this new law insisting that “When you’re responding to a situation like that, and someone’s in plain clothes with a gun, who’s the bad guy? Who are you going to take out to save the lives of…other students you are trying to protect?”
In “Vulnerable Schools Need Protection: Guns, Training For Teachers may be the answer”, published in a 2008 edition of the Chicago Tribune, David McGrath argues that some teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon for protection. First, McGrath states that if a random psychotic gunman were searching for someplace to attack, his classroom would make an easy target. He feels that if he was trained and armed, his class would not be trapped without a chance of survival because he would be able to defend against the gunman. Sec...
Concealed weapons in college campus’s have been a big issue since the mass shootings in Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois Universities. Allowing for guns to be allowed in college campus’s would be a bad thing to do since it would create additional risks for students, even if weapons were allowed it wouldn’t deter the shooter, and it would detract from a healthy learning environment. So far there is only five states , Colorado, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin, that allow “concealed carry” at school campus.
Young adults are not just creating this school violence, kids as young as twelve are committing acts as dangerous at their own school shootings. In Sparks Middle School in Nevada, twelve-year-old Jose Reyes had taken his parents hand gun with him to school. He had shot 2 children and killed a teacher that was also a war veteran. He then turned the gun on himself ("US School Violence Fast Facts." CNN). Many other incidents had occurred as early as 1927 to present day. Many of these shootings include the principal and certain classmates as the target. Simple disagreements between classmates can trigger a response that creates the such violence.
Over the past few years there have been many incidents when children bring guns to school and shoot their fellow classmate(s) and/or teacher(s). The most recent and probably most tragic happened in 1998 at Colombine High School in Colorado when a group of students entered the school and murdered several students and a teacher. The first thing that everyone wondered once they finally heard the news is how the children got the guns? Supporters of gun control believe that if there were harsher gun laws, a lot of the school shootings would have never taken plac...
College campuses are more dangerous than ever because of the past decade; guns have not only been manufactured in excess, but availability and ease of accessibility. According to James Cool (2008), a supporter of guns on campus, reasoned why the increase of weapons occurred recently; “Our nation was founded … during the same time that modern firearms were invented and became readily available due to the Industr...

On the CDC Media Relations web page, the 1997 statistics show that 8.3% of high school students carry a weapon (e.g., gun, knife, or club) to school and 7.4% of high school students were threatened or injured with a weapon on school property throughout the year. In the report, it also included that nationwide, 4% of students had missed 1 or more days of school during the 30 days preceding the survey because they had felt unsafe at school or when traveling to or from school. These statistics show that students are afraid of going to school, they don’t feel safe and something should be done to change that. There should be no reason why students need to bring weapons to school in order to feel safe.... ... middle of paper ... ...
The schools had also brought in school officers to have on school grounding during school hours. They feel that they need these type of secured to have their children protected. Parents feel a little say knowing that there is a police in school patrolling. In several school they have started to do searches to make sure no one is bring anything dangerous that could harm a person. This is super important to makes sure no weapons are on school grounds. Schools have also put on their policy that if any weapon is found on the person’s possession there could be serious
Concealed pistols have always been an issue that the public wants to know more and more about. Most people who were born and raised in the outdoors agree fully on the legality of a concealed weapon, whereas people who were born in big cities where they did not hunt, shoot guns, or have a firearm in their house do not. This is a very large and argued about cultural issue. I personally am all for concealed carry of a firearm. There are many reasons for this such as personal defense, sense of safety, and the protection of others around me. There are some questions that are raised about the carrying of a concealed weapon such as “what states can I travel in with my firearm?”, “what is the process of applying for a concealed carry permit?”, and “can I enter a weapon free zone to stop a shooter?”. Concealed carry has proven able to reduce crime and lower the casualty rate of a shooter who enters a public area with the intent to kill as many people as possible. Some people argue that concealed weapons are just carried by people who are looking for trouble and that you can obtain a pistol without a background check. This will also be explored and explained thoroughly.
Due to the recent disruption of violent crimes on campus, many citizens that are pro-gun activist have suggested that both the students and teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on school campuses. Those who are with guns allowed on school campuses claim that their rights have been violated for the reason that many college campuses refuse to allow weapons of any kind on their property. The Constitution of The United States of America already grants citizens the right to carry guns with them. It is not appropriate for guns to be in a vulnerable area such as a college campus or any University. There are already too many guns available to the public or easy to get any kind of gun, and allowing them on
Violence in our schools has always been a problem, now more than ever before. Each year many students are injured and some are even killed during so-called 'school-yard brawls.'; In fact, more than 1,000 students are seriously injured per year during school violence in California alone. (http://www.geocities.com/area51/stats/7403.html) In most cases of serious injury, weapons were involved, including common school supplies such as pencils and pens. Historically, the school systems response to possession of weapons on campus has been at the very least confiscation of said weapons and suspension of the possessor, more commonly expulsion of the possessor and occasionally the bringing of criminal charges to bear. The use of weapons to do violence has had much the same results. In some schools, the students pass through a metal detector and/or are searched for weapons upon a regular basis. (Ch. 4 news at 6:00), However, when the weapons being used are common school supplies, what can one do? The number of students injured by their classmates with common school supplies such as pencils and pens are on the rise. A student carrying a gun or a knife is often busted before having an opportunity to use said weapon, one with a pencil on the other hand, they run free until they seriously injure or even possibly kill someone with the pencil. Our current policy is to deal with the student after they commit the crime, as far as stabbing with pencils go anyway, treating them as though they had used any other weapon. It is my belief that something can be done to prevent, or at least minimize the number of incidents involving the use of pencils as 'stealth'; weapons in our classrooms. Although we do not need to worry about lead poisoning from pencils, (pencil lead is really graphite), (From graphite to pencil, Ali Mitgutsch, 1985) when misused a pencil is a deadly weapon, one far worse than a pocketknife.
Third, carrying a concealed firearm is a human right. According to a 2014 study in George Mason Law & Economics Research Paper by Nelson Lund, Ph.D., Professor at George Mason University School of Law, stated that “the right to self-defense and to the means of defending oneself is a basic natural right that grows out of the right to life” (1). The right of self-defense is the first law of nature; it is a right that government ought to respect. The law-abiding citizens should have the right to defend themselves and their families. Firearms ownership is widespread in the United States. Many citizens view gun ownership as a fundamental right. There are a huge number of permits issued every year. According to a report from the Crime Prevention
Some school are making their school a gun free zone. However, it is true that some people try to attack gun free zone because they know that no one has a gun to kill them back. Even people call the police, it takes time for the police to come and shooting does not take that much time to kill people. To solve this problem I think the campus safety should carry guns. Also, teachers may have a right to have guns, too. When the shooter comes into the classroom the teachers are the only adult that could protect the students. To protect children they all have to be trained how to use the gun. Also it is necessary for teachers and campus safety to have a mental health care periodically. There are many scientist who are researching about what kind of people tend to become mental illness and when do they become so. Unfortunately there is no strong evidence so, it is very important to watch out for the mental health of people who carries
