Recommended: Effect of realism on literature

Red Kayak feels like it’s based on a true story because of how many realistic events that could have happened in real life. There were many major events that happened throughout the story. The major event is when Brady found out that his friends had something to do with Ben’s death because of the three holes in the kayak and how Brady eventually told the truth after how hard it was to realize that he, along with his friends, might get into a huge deal of trouble. Realistic fiction is a genre consisting of stories that could have actually occurred to people or animals in a believable setting. An example is when Brady was normal in the beginning but then when he found out the truth he became a little paranoid and nervous about everything. Credible events are events that could happen in real life. An example is when Brady and his cousin hung out together and talked to each other. Real settings are settings that could be real. An example is if a story took place in Los Angeles, California because it is a real place. True-to-life themes are themes that could be applied to you. On page 172, Red Kayak shows an example of credible events because it says, “In slow motion, right before our very eyes little rivulets of rainwater pushed aside the slime until we could see, my dad and I, now three holes have been drilled into the bottom.” This shows an example of credible events because this could have happened in real life, someone could have drilled the holes because they were mad. For example in O’Brien’s story rat is the one who writes to the friends’ sister but there was also some other guys who say what happened.
