Deciding what occupation to choose for a career is a difficult choice to make, however becoming a real estate broker and eventually a real estate developer has always been one of my aspirations. Real estate brokers and developers are the reason most commercial and residential estates gets introduced to the market and end up sold. Real estate brokers and sales agents help clients buy, sell, and rent properties but only brokers are licensed to manage their own real estate businesses. Real estate developers acquire property upon which they plan to develop their real estate projects and then sell it back to a buyer, whether for commercial or residential purposes. When asked about a typical career path in the real estate field Sandra responded “There is no set career path in this field, everybody has a different background and rarely two people have the same story. Sometimes college graduates join after college or middle aged people join after a career switch.” In regards to extra study, Sandra recommended for any aspiring real estate broker to build their interpersonal skills as well as business and financial skills. Sandra stated her favorite part about being a broker is “using her interpersonal skills and love of architecture to help clients out.” The values that attract people into becoming a broker include income, ability to self-dictate their work life, and love for helping people out. When working as a broker there is rarely clients who have the same exact mindset when buying a house, because of this there tends to be plenty of variety in showing clients houses. Application of career theories to my own life allows for analyzing past and future career decisions. Holland’s Theory of Careers states that one’s vocation is an expression of self, personality, and way of life. There is an indisputable and fundamental difference in the quality of life one experiences if they choose a career one truly enjoys, versus choosing a career one detests. A true testament to the validity of Holland’s theory, my job/career choices reflect my interests, as well as the evolution of my personality (internal self). My first job as a fine jewelry specialist and second job as a make-up artist echo my love of the fashion world. As I matured and became less fascinated by presumed “glamour” careers, I became captivated by physical fitness, nutrition, and medicine; I received my national fitness trainer certificate so that I may become a personal trainer. Nevertheless, my career decisions do not fit uniformly into merely one career theory.

The career I wish to pursue is that of a stockbroker. I am extremely interested in the trading of stocks and financial holdings so the career of a stockbroker just seems to fit in with my overall plan. Numbers have also always been a fascination of mine and the trends of the economy and long term financial outlooks have often interested me greatly. Stock broking is a risky business that one needs to be prepared for highs and lows if choosing to pursue. You must understand what a stockbroker truly does to even begin to follow this as a life long career.

Introduction Real estate is a fixed, tangible and immovable asset in the form of houses or commercial property (Seldin & Richard 1985). Real estate market involves developing, renting, selling/purchasing and renovating of these assets (houses). Market participants include developers (contractors, engineers, and so on), facilitators (mortgage companies, real estate brokers, banks, management agents and so on), owners, renters (leasers) and renovators (Seldin & Richard 1985). Like other economic markets, real estate markets have internal and external forces that impact the market (Seldin & Richard 1985). Demand and supply forces have the major impact on the industry as they determine growth or decline in the market (Seldin & Richard 1985).

Coming to the point of my current career choice has been a long road. My idea of what a career is or should be has changed with circumstances and age. According to Weintraub (2005), “the average worker spends only four years in a job and will have 12 jobs in as many as five career fields during his or her working life.” (para. 1) My first career was marriage and motherhood followed by a surprising healthcare career. What the future holds waits to be seen. With a bachelor of science degree in information technology the options are wide open.
Gathering information about what it takes to become a real estate and just what it is that a real estate agent actually does required me to do a significant amount of research. The first action that I took was to sit down with my grandfather, who happens to be a real estate agent. I asked him what I should look in to in order to gain a better understanding of his profession. After interviewing him, we went to the offices of Atova Real Estate where I observed the daily activities of the real estate agents who work in the office. Later, we went to the offices of Pioneer Title, Guild Mortgage, and the Idaho Intermountain Multiple Listing Services. We di...
