Abstract This paper will analyze how social media affects legal outcomes with the communication breakdown between professional athletes and their organization they represent. The athlete, whose case I will be analyzing, is Baltimore Ravens NFL star Ray Rice and his domestic violence legal battle. This paper will also concentrate on how social media affects the punishments chosen for these athletes facing legal prosecution. The idea of symbolic interaction is how reality is real and it does exist, although not all are the same. This difference between each individual’s realities is caused by people having different interactions with one another therefore different realities are formed. The case I will be investigating is of Ray Rice, his expression …show more content…
It will also determine how using knowledge of persuasion can affect the outcome of the goal by persuasion. In this case, it was the audience persuading the speaker to share the audience intention. I will also be analyzing the idea of communication breakdown through research and the dissection of the subject’s substance. Introduction Freedom. One thing that our whole country was founded on was that concept and acceptance for things that some do not understand. In a nation so prided on these ideals why is it that when athletes are faced with their crimes, it is pushed under the rug until social media forces a further punishment? The purpose of this paper is to analyze the case of Ray Rice and his domestic violence altercation and how the communication breakdown between social media and the National Football League affected his player status. This case will be paired with the theory of social interactionism, knowledge of persuasion, and theory of power. In this case, the communication breakdown between social media and the NFL commissioner had a huge impact on the final outcome of …show more content…
By using the theory of symbolic interactionism, I was able to base my questions on the events that have taken place in the past and focus on the events that were unfavorable in comparison to the case. There are a number of questions that could have and should have been asked but I chose to not explore these options as I feared I would lose focus on my goal. My study will not include questions such as the following: Has there ever been any similar cases to this one that was not in the sports world?, Within the history of the NFL being established and Roger Goodell as the commissioner, has he been faced any other situations alike Ray Rice’s case?, If so, how did he handle those situations?, Did Goodell attempt to push those criminal altercations under the rug as well or did he handle them according to the NFL conduct policy?. I chose to exclude these questions from my study because I felt as though Goodell’s past decisions or past cases are irrelevant to this exact study. Being that I focused on how the communication breakdown between social media and the NFL is affected through theories of power, knowledge of persuasion, and social
Ray Rice a former NFL running back who played for the Baltimore Ravens was caught brutally smacking his fiancee over, leaving her blacked out on the floor of a casino elevator taking place in Atlantic City. The footage leaked out world wide and the public created huge controversy over the coverage that continuously played a numerous of times on major news networks. Rice who was cut from the Ravens and suspended from the NFL after the release of the show down is now an unsigned free agent, searching for hope. Through shocking evidence and a glimpse into a professional football players life, I aim to examine how media created an entertainment brand out of the countless amount of times the video was aired, how the NFL handled the scandal, and how Rice strives to regain his identity.
In the past recent years, we have heard in the news around cases involving assault and battery cases involving professional athletes or other celebrity figures, however, it is “not uncommon in the sport and recreation environment for a person to be harmed as a result of another’s intentional conduct, both on and off the “field of play” Cotten & Wolohan, p. 214). Nonetheless, it is important to understand that the term “liability” is often not limited to athletes-as-combatants. For example, in Law for recreation & sport managers uses an example from page 215 that discusses a youth football game regarding how a referee was attacked by three coaches and also was tackled by a 14-year-old player, resulting in charges of felony battery. Thus, Hamakawa remarks to say, ”recreation and sport managers should be aware that their organizations are not immune from incidents involving participants, parents and other spectators, coaches, and officials, security
...an is capable of persuading his audience into accepting his simplistic views of the world. He makes it easier to rationalize with his stance by his strategic use of sentence structure and word choice. When analyzing a past speech or interpreting a speech as it is given, upmost priority should be given to analytical tools for analyzing persuasive symbols and language. Whether the topic at hand is motivated by great emotions as it is here or not, the audience can easily be swayed in one direction surprisingly based only on universal comprehension.
Even though athletes get special treatment they never think about how them getting off easy can back fire. The Ray Rice case is a prime example of how it was a downfall in their career. Rice got released from the Baltimore ravens and since then he has not play football. The NFL suspended him indefinitely, but it was later lifted because he did not lie to the commissioner about the domestic violence case. He was free to play again, but no team signed him because it was going to come with a ton of backlash and no team wanted to deal with that because it would have been a distraction to the team. Also, many people lost respect for Rice for putting his hands on a women. No one would look at him the same anymore. He has yet to sign with any team since the incident took
This research paper will determine whether professional athletes deserve a second chance to play in professional sports after inappropriate behaviors. Professional athletes are considered idols and are often held to higher standards. Society has become concerned with so many of today’s athletes making the evening news for their unsuitable behaviors.
Ray Rice was a NFL player who was seen on a video footage punching his fiancee, Janay Palmer, in the face and dragging her unconscious body out of the elevator. Rice was terminated by the Baltimore Ravens after the video was released to the public. He was arrested and indicted for third degree aggravated assault. Until this day no NFL teams are interested in allowing him on the team because of his domestic violence incident. Just as the Ray Rice, Martin was found guilty and charged with reckless endangerment. This domestic violence case prove the NCVS statistics correct because the demographics are similar: an African American woman, mid 30s, punched in the face by her fiancee. Also, it shows that this type of crime is relevant in the United States. Especially if it was ripped from the headlines and used in a popular crime television
When does a contact sport become a crime? That is the question that every National Football League (NFL) fan has asked themselves in light of the former Saints defensive coordinator (DC) Gregg Williams’ “bounty program.” No one person has wrestled with this question more than the NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell. Goodell was faced with an ethical decision that will shape his tenure as the NFL’s commissioner; his decision will become precedence for many commissioners after him. Using the RESOLVEDD strategy of decision-making developed by Raymond Pfeiffer and Ralph Forsberg (2005), this paper will examine the scandal, scrutinize the decisions made, and determine if the NLF commissioner took the correct action for the league.
Athletes have been abusing their spouses since sports were created, but not until the OJ Simpson trial did domestic violence become "the issue du jour." When Simpson was arrested on New Years Day for beating his wife, none of the newspapers reported it. When he pleaded no contest five months later, there was a small brief in the second page of The Los Angeles Times' Metro Section (Cart).
Persuasion is a commonly used communication technique that allows us to socially influence a certain topic positively or negatively. Its purpose is to help affirm or nullify an idea, belief or attitude. Sometimes the exact topic is very detectable in communication such as during debates but other times it displayed a little more subtly. Persuasion is more than just verbally speaking. Non-verbal communication such as body language, tone and pitch of the voice can also add to the affirmation of the topic. The setting and location also help encourage the acceptance of what is being persuaded.
persuasion on people you need to be familiar with the structure behind a persuasive message. It is important to identify which route is beingused (central or peripheral) and understand the effect of the communicator, the content of the message, the method of communication, and the reaction by the audience. Counterarguements in making a public commitment strengthen out resistance to persuasion.

In a moral context, it is important to understand the extension of unethical conduct on the field to the inevitable corruption of personal life that becomes part of societal interaction. This type of behavior can extend to sexual misconduct (rape, marital infidelity, etc.), violence, and criminal activity. In modern sporting culture, the popularity and great success of athletes tends to tempt tem into thinking that the game they play is also being played in their personal lives. This form of public personae affects the way they view lawful conduct and morality as a means to achieve success in family life, personal choices, and the management of their daily activities off the field. The public image dictates the way they interact with other people outside of their professional careers. More so, the promotion of immoral and unethical behaviors in sporting institutions set another precedent in which athletes are encouraged to behave through a gamesmanship model. The enculturation of corrupt business practices tend to create a culture of winning as the primary goal of attaining greater wealth and financial prosperity over the sportsmanship qualities that can increase the ethical and moral culture of athletic performance. These moral aspects of off-field behavior define the underlying extension of gamesmanship as a part of immoral behavior by professional athletes:
In closing, Persuasion is a powerful tool, both in trying to persuade others and being
When examining the issue of criminal acts in sports it is easy to realize that there are many places where these acts occur. The range of these acts is far more vast than just in the professional arenas. This is, however, what the public sees and hears about most often. While this is one of the major topics of this paper, criminal acts are found in all of sport ranging from professionals, to college, high school, and in youth sports, including the reaction of the fans. This paper will take an in-depth look at the four major points regarding criminal acts in sport: the acts themselves; the consequences of those acts; the possible reasons for the acts occurring; an analysis of a few major events that have occurred and the possible solutions to the problem of criminal acts in sport. In the section about fan reaction to sport, there will be an overall account of the individual acts and not personal cases due to the overload of personal events that occur.
Persuasion is an important aspect of communication, certainly a significant business activity. Regardless of whether this comes in the form of a sender influencing a party or the receiver itself is being influenced. Typically, this could come in the form of a salesman or, even a manager communicating with key stakeholders, such as potential investors.
