Rainsford was running through the forest he didn’t know what he would do next. He was proud of himself, but scared the general would be coming at him hard. He knew that the dogs would be chasing after him also. It was night and he could hardly see thing. As he was running through the forest he got to the shore where he swam up to. He saw his ship! He didn’t think it was real. He never thought his crew would come back for him. The boat was still, so he got on to tell everyone he was ok and they could, only no one was on the ship. He thought they already left to go look for him. He peered of the ship, but he couldn't see anything because it was dark and the trees were too tall. He jumped off the boat hoping that they did not find …show more content…
“No he ran away right after he killed my dearest friends Ivan.” Whitney was surprised. She never thought Rainsford would something like that. Rainsford walked up behind them. He was very quit, and then took Whitney by the arm and started running towards the boat. Zaroff had noticed but he saw them running. Whitney tried to free herself from Rainsfords grip, but could not. Rainsford stopped when Zaroff was not in sight. “We have to get to the boat before he comes to hunt both us!” Rainsford said Whitney looked back to see a pack of dogs running at them. She did hesitate and started running for the boat. The boat was in sight, but the dogs were getting closer. Rainsford and whitney ran as fast as they could. But the whitney tripped on long that she did not see. Rainsford turned around to see her laying on the ground pulling her foot out of the log. Her foot came loose, but she couldn't get up. Rainsford ran back and picked her up. They started running for the boat. The dogs were so close to them that they could see the green in there eyes. They jumped onto the boat. They had made it! Zaroff was not the far behind the dogs. He got to the shore just soon enough to see the boat
The most dangerous game began as a sport for one man. His name is Sanger Rainsford. In Richard Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford, an avid hunter, is lost at sea, stranded on “Ship-Trap” Island-every sailor’s worst nightmare. Rainsford goes through a series of events that prove to be life-altering. Even though Sanger Rainsford went through many trials and tribulations, he never lost his intelligence, composure, or his bravery.
“Rainsford’s second thought was even more terrible. It sent a shudder of cold horror through his whole being. Why had the general smiled? Why had he turned back?” This quote is important for us to know because it creates suspense overall in the story and helps to keep it interesting. It also helps to show more of the dynamic change that Rainsford is going through. “Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror.” At the beginning of the story, Rainsford was overconfident and was not fearful of much.
After falling off his ship and forced to swim to a mysterious island, Rainsford is faced with a challenge. General Zaroff traps him in a “game” that requires Rainsford to use his skills to survive. He is hunted for three days; where he was chased, tracked down, and shot at. General Zaroff led the hunt to try to kill Rainsford. General was equipped with more firepower and help from his henchman and dogs. But even with his much greater opponent, he was able to survive. Rainsford used his many skills to defeat and kill his enemy. He used quick wit to make traps that would slow Zaroff and kill his dogs and henchman. Then he used his intelligence to escape Zaroff by swimming away, but sneaking back into his own mansion.
A skilled hunter sprints desperately through the woods, realizing the futility of hiding from his greatest foe: his own kind. Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is the story of a hunter that becomes the hunted. The story explores the sense of extreme terror the protagonist feels being pursued by a psychopath living on a mysterious island. This protagonist, Rainsford, has many traits that aid him in his battle with the general. By demonstrating his cunning, sly, and remorseful traits, Rainsford shows the story’s theme of “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes”.
“I had been born into a raging ocean where I swam relentlessly, flailing my arms in hope of rescue, of reaching a shoreline I never sighted. Never solid ground beneath me, never a resting place. I had lived with only the desperate hope to stay afloat; that and nothing more. But when at last I wrote my first words in the page, I felt an island rising beneath my feet like the back of a whale”.
In the beginning of the story, Rainsford has a conversation with his friend, Whitney, about hunting animals. Rainford does not care about the animals that he hunts. He believes hunting is only a sport to kill innocent creatures. “‘Who cares how a jaguar feels?’” (1) Showing the reader exactly what he thinks of hunting. Rainsford does not understand that the animals he hunts are like the people that Zaroff hunts. They are innocent, and he is murdering them when he hunts them. Rainsford thinks that Zaroff is insane for murdering people, but Rainsford is also a murderer. When Zaroff hunts Rainsford, the protagonist realizes the terror and pain the jaguars must have felt when he hunted them. Now the roles are reversed, and Rainsford is the one being hunted. “The Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse. The general was saving him for another day’s sport! Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror.” (17) Rainsford has changed his feelings about hunting animals now, and he has become a better person. He now takes into account how his prey feels. His interactions with people will also be different, because instead of being extremely overconfident, he realizes that he is not perfectly adept at hunting, and everyone has feelings that matter. In conclusion, Rainsford is now more humble and less overconfident than he was when he began his
“Rainsford did not smile, I am still a beast at bay,” he said, in a low hoarse voice. “Get ready, General Zaroff.” The General made one of his deepest bows. “I see, splendid! One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On Guard. Rainsford…” [page 76]
Rainsford overcomes many obstacles, and in return he receives that special feeling of satisfaction in his body. To start, he overcomes the thought of him being weak. Furthermore, he conquers learning the value of even an animal’s life. Not to mention, he defeats becoming the hunted, when he is the hunter. In the short story Sanger Rainsford outwits General Zaroff in the battle of “The Most Dangerous
general zaroff brings rainsford into the house and tried to make him feel at home. general zaroff had a lot of money because he is one of the best hunters in the world too. general zaroff is telling rainsford that he got bored of hunting jaguars and tigers. he said he has a much more exciting animal to hunt because it actually came yell for hope and fear and yell from pain. rainsford finally realized that the animal general zaroff was talking about was no animal it was human!
Well, there is a lot of different ways that external events affected an internal change in Sanger Rainsford in this story. There are all kinds of conflicts that change the way he thinks about stuff and how he does things. A lot of things changed in this story because of that.
First off, Rainsford will hunt again because he has hunted as the predator for so long and was now the prey. When the general says that he “read[s] all books on hunting in English, French, and Russian”(Connell 24). He also adds that he read Rainsford’s book on hunting “snow leopards” in the mountains so the general knows who Rainsford is and that shows that Rainsford must enjoy hunting so much that he writes books on it (Connell 24). Later on, when the general forces Rainsford to be hunted by him, Rainsford sets a trap for him. After he
Throughout the story Richard Connell has the readers at the edges of their seats by making the story suspenseful. At first Rainsford is being chased by General Zaroff and the reader doesn't know what might happen next. While Rainsford is being hunted, he keeps his cool until he realizes Zaroff is messing with him. In the story it says,"The general was playing with him! The general was saving him for another day’s sport! The Cossack was the cat; he was the mouse.
This story begins on a dark and cold night in the Caribbean Sea. In The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell gave many hints throughout the story about Zaroff’s devious plan. One of the most important of conflicts was that it built suspense which showed the change in the characters feelings. All of the events made this an external conflict.

Her spry, Timberland-clad foot planted itself upon a jagged boulder, motionless, until her calf muscles tightened and catapulted her small frame into the next stride. Then Sara's dance continued, her feet playing effortlessly with the difficult terrain. As her foot lifted from the ground, compressed mint-colored lichen would spring back into position, only to be crushed by my immense boot, struggling to step where hers had been. My eyes fixated on the forest floor, as fallen trees, swollen roots, and unsteady rocks posed constant threats for my exhausted body. Without glancing up I knew what was ahead: the same dense, impenetrable green that had surrounded us for hours. My throat prickled with unfathomable thirst, as my long-empty Nalgene bottle slapped mockingly at my side. Gnarled branches snared at my clothes and tore at my hair, and I blindly hurled myself after Sara. The portage had become a battle, and the ominously darkening sky raised the potential for casualties. Gritting my teeth with gumption, I refused to stop; I would march on until I could no longer stand.
