For my project I was originally going to write a simple children’s book to raise awareness about racism and differences in ethnicities in young children. This idea did not pan out to my what I wanted so I decided to show a short educational video clip about racism awareness in children to my nieces and nephews. I believe if awareness were taught at a young age, racism would not be such a problem when children are older.
In Women’s studies, I’ve learned of many systems of inequalities and privilege among classes. I feel if awareness is brought to children to not judge, then it could affect many men and women’s lives in the future and eliminate racism and stereotypes. In this day and age in American culture and society, raising a generation to support equality is crucial in our society’s transition into the future.
During my research on ways to raise awareness in children about racism and inequality and how children view their peers, I found a interesting website with an abundant amount of information on how to address a child when he or she questions society’s views on race and/or gets called a derogatory term or vice versa. This I found so helpful for the future for my daughter. “We can choose to actively influence our children’s attitudes” (Leadership Conference on Civil Rights Education Fund, 1995, p. 1). Children see the world through their parents, teachers, and mentors lives. Whether or not a person knows it, a child imitates actions made by authority figures in their lives, even if these actions are subconscience to that person.
Another interesting phenomenon I found in my research was that children have a subconscious bias that their own race is more superior than any other. Whether this is taught or innate is unknown. ...

...r view of every race, religion, and ethnicity in America and teaching these children to not be racist or unequal towards others will give America a brighter future and even those children a brighter future. Being able to communicate and work sophisicateively with different individuals is a necessity in their work lives to succeed.

Minorities, African American and Latinos, in America are faced with challenges daily in white society. There are many obstacles minorities experience such as: being judged based on race, stereotyped, or worst being discriminated against by peers. Sadly, minorities can’t seem to escape to harsh realities society created. Citizens in the white society categorize humans by their race to socially construct the achievements and legitimate political goals. Minorities struggles with these goals due to the challenges they experience. The location of these challenges can occur in various places including on the job and/or at school. You may be under the impression that such challenges occurs within the adult minority groups. However, this applies to minority children as well. When the children are face with
Tatum’s book “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” (1997) analyses the development of racial identity and the influence of racism in American’s culture. She emphasizes the Black-White interactions by comparing the terminology in which racism perceived based on David Wellman’s definition of racism. Tatum also believes racism is not one person in particular but is a cultural situation in which ethnicity assigns some groups significantly privileged compared to others. She illustrates how engaging children in terms of interracial understanding will empower them to respond to racial stereotypes and systems of discrimination.

There are children who are of mixed race, when back then these children would be shunned by both sides. The children are able to play, become friends, and be happy. They are able to have a life where they do not have to worry about getting off the street just because a white person is passing by. Even though extraordinary changes have been made in the past to achieve racial equality, America is still racist, especially in schools. This Book was intended to inform adults. Adults do not tend to educate their children of the facts of racism and the seriousness of it. In conclusion, African American children face unwanted obstacles that prevent them from getting the equal education opportunities that they deserve. These children face problems everyday regarding crime, poverty and the school system not providing the right supplies for them to become effective members of their communities. When these children grow up in the high-poverty areas, they are already being set up as a failure. The time for equal education opportunities may not come due to the lack of funding, poverty levels and the way they are looked at through societies eyes. It is up to the black community to fix what they need to succeed.
